A really cool addition to the WDW Record Bunker, from 1961, the story of Greyfriars Bobby. From my favorite era in Disney, this is the dual story of a tiny Skye Terrier who keeps running into a cemetery to guard his masters grave, and the 2 Scott's who vie for the 'lil pups affection. Donald Crisp and Laurence Naismith star in this family-drama, directed by Francis Chagrin. Ginny Tyler narrates. The film is based on a 1912 novel by Eleanor Atkinson which in itself is based on a true story from the 19th Century. Nickelodeon characters at a Disney Park, thatâs what MGM was all about back in the day đ If it werenât for the Earffel Tower in the background or the Doug lunchbox Iâm holding, it almost doesnât make sense. To me, Disney-MGM Studios was a theme park that bought the rights to popular franchises and made them fit into a park of their own đŹ You almost had to be there because if you werenât you wouldnât believe it. Today we have something a little niche to share, but I really hope itâll spark some interest into the colorful history of Disneyland. Disneylandâs Tomorrowland was home to some of the most unique Disney attractions of all time, especially early on. But we have to remember the context in which they were built. 1955 was a completely different world than what we enjoy today. People alive then lived full lives without ever (or rarely) experiencing an item made of plastic! Something as simple and trivial as plastic was a groundbreaking technology at one point in time (and not that long ago!). Look around you now and see how many plastic items are in sight. Youâre probably holding a plastic item in your hand right now! But 70 years ago, plastics, and chemistry behind their creation, was groundbreaking. Plastics Engineering was an emerging profession which pioneered the use of man made chemical compounds into daily life. The Hall of Chemistry was Monsantos first partnership in Disneyland. Monsanto suffers the âlive long enough to see yourself become the villainâ syndrome as their leverage of new and exciting chemicals turned into a dark and dangerous compromise. But in 1955, people still marveled at what the future held in synthetics and man made materials. The Hall of Chemistry highlighted the 8 natural materials which Monstanto used, along with new processes, to form over 4,000 man made materials used in thousands of products from perfume to building materials, to clothing! Today we feature another Disney sports movie. I think this one is actually pretty good too! From Walt Disney Pictures, 2015's McFarland USA. McFarland USA is based on a true story from 1987 about a mostly Latino cross country team from McFarland California who competes for a championship. It is a fun story, acted well and has you rooting for the boys through the film. Kevin Costner stars along with Maria Bello & Morgan Saylor. Many McFarland students were used as extras too. The film did ok, grossing $45.7 million. It is rated pretty well with IMDB rating it at 7/10 and Rotten Tomatoes giving it an 80% positive rating. The film was nominated for a 2015 Teen Choice Award. I first visited Disneyâs California Adventure in January 2003. At that point it was just short of its second birthday and in all honesty, it didnât leave much of an impression (although Soarinâ Over California blew my mind). While we can argue all day about whether the park has gotten better or worse, I do think a bit of change has done it good.
