OTD - May 11, 1883 - animator and artist Albert Hurter was born. Hurter joined Barré-Bowers in the mid-1910s on the "Mutt and Jeff" series, where he was praised as the studio's best draftsman. He later moved to Los Angeles, where he started a small studio for animation and illustration. In 1931, Hurter joined Walt Disney's studio with help from his former colleague Ted Sears, and he made animator animator the Silly Symphonies, beginning with "The Cat's Out" (1931). Walt noticed his flair for caricaturing mundane objects and allowed him to draw inspirational sketches, which made Hurter the first concept artist in Disney history. His colleague Dick Huemer recalled: "[he] would sit by himself all day and fill sheet after sheet with drawings, all highly imaginative and startlingly grotesque." Hurter provided thorough concept art for shorts such as "Three Little Pigs" (1933), "The Grasshopper and the Ants" (1934) and "The Wise Little Hen" (1934), for which he drew the first sketch sketch of Donald Duck. When Walt embarked on producing "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937), Hurter's Swiss background made him a key agent in developing the film's European feel. He drew sketches of the characters, locations and props, including drawings of the cottage so rich that they were made into a maquette. Hurter later sketches for "Pinocchio" and "Fantasia" (1940), "Dumbo" (1941) and the early versions of "The Wind in the Willows" (1949), "Cinderella" (1950), "Alice in Wonderland" (1951), "Peter Pan" (1953) and "Lady and the Tramp" (1955). In late 1940, however, he was diagnosed with pulmonary edema, though he managed to continue drawing. He died in 1942. A book collection of his drawings entitled "He Drew as He Pleased" was published in 1949. Hurter was famous for his rich imagination, his photographic memory, and his historical status as Disney's first concept artist. Walt himself wrote of him : "That impenetrable mind of his was never easily figured out, but he was a most lovable character when you got to know him. His imagination was rare and unique."

A #HalfwayToHalloween favorite for my fellow Disney fans, this is one of the Twisted Tale books about Aurora: Once Upon A Dream. The twist to this one is "What if Sleeping Beauty Never Woke Up?" This is such a genius retelling of a classic and Braswell does such a good job instilling a sense of dread on every page. Just take a look at the pages in the last picture for a sneak peak I can post more about the other Twisted Tale books I love -this one is my third favorite - but Once Upon A Dream gives the best spooky vibes in my opinion! 🎃✨️ *side note: my top two favorites are also by the amazing Liz Braswell ✨️ *side side note, this is not my favorite rendition of this song, but the non-remixed Lana Del Rey version wasn't available 😭
