Smaller prints this evening. Two original little ex-libris woodcut prints. The first is by Japanese artist Yasushi Omoto from 1973. 13.5cm x 6.5cm . I really like this piece, even with its slightly post-apocalyptic theme. It’s a surprisingly calm image. The second is by Swiss artist Hanns Studer. I’m not quite sure what the cockerel/ mermaid theme represents, but I suppose it has something to do with Oswald Henning, who the image was created for. A smaller offering this evening, but a biggish, small offering (?). A little linocut or maybe woodcut by Czech artist Miroslav Houra (1933-2006). A beautifully coloured scene of a fairly industrial town. I’d guess from the style that it is probably from around 1970, when he was creating similar works. The condition is good. A few marks and small creases to the margins, which will be hidden when the piece is framed. Two more little ex-libris bookplates tonight (another little batch arriving next week). The first is by Czech artist Jaroslav Uiberlay and is a lithograph from 1961. Signed and dated. The second is by German artist Helga Lange and is a colour woodcut from 1977. Again it’s signed and dated. They measure 9cm x 7cm and 16cm x 10cm respectively. Another small batch of ex-libris prints arrived in the post this morning. A mix of artists and styles, but several lovely Japanese prints. The first two here are probably little woodblock prints- Yoshio Kanamori a nighttime scene from 1967. (You may remember that I had a much larger scale print in previously). Teruo Takahashi, a charming image of a weathervane. Date unknown. These are, of course, small scale prints the larger measuring approximately 10.5cm x 7.5cm, but once framed up with a good sized mount, they make really lovely small decorative pieces at a relatively affordable price. The Kanamori print will be £50 once framed and mounted. A couple of small, signed ex-libris prints tonight. I think both are by Czech artists, the second certainly is. I can’t, unfortunately, read the signature on the first print. It looks to be from 1976? The second print is a signed limited edition print, by Karel Fiala for his own use. Is the pondering person dreaming of wild horses or maybe just the countryside? Another trip to the framers today to collect a small bundle of prints. This one is a mystery to me. It’s an ex-libris print. An etching maybe? It is signed and numbered (52/100) but I can’t make out the signature. A really intriguing, skilful, slightly Escher-like image. In great condition, newly framed and mounted. A small but lovely piece tonight. This little ex-libris print was among the newly framed prints I picked up at the end of last week. It’s a strong image. A Phoenix rising from the ashes? Not sure. I’m also not sure of the artist, unfortunately. The name Veit Geissler certainly sounds German, but not to say that it was created there. It came in with German, Polish, Romanian, Finnish and Czech prints, so who knows! It looks like a woodcut or maybe linocut. In very nice condition, and newly framed and mounted. The frame measures approximately 24cm x 20cm. £45 including Uk shipping. Very good German Surrealist painter: Richard Oelze: Orakel (1955) 98 x 130 cm. Hamburger Kunsthalle Another one of the gems I photographed in the Hamburger Kunsthalle last summer. Oelze is one of my favourite Surrealist painters. His paintings are mesmerizing and mysterious but need a close look to catch the details. A close look also reveals how he works. He builds a layered and intricate texture with some techniques that produce random structures, then carves out figurations and landscape by painting the background over it. Rudolf Kugler (1921-2013) German. I think this lovely print is probably an etching with aquatint. It looks like an abstract depiction of a boatyard or harbour. It could be from his time in the Lofoten Islands in Norway. It certainly looks like his work from the 1950s or 60s when he spent time on the Lofoten Islands. It’s in really lovely condition. I don’t think it’s ever been framed or displayed. The sheet size is approximately 43cm x 30cm. The paper has a nice deckled edge, so I will probably have it float mounted to show this off. Hand signed in pencil to the lower right. Kugler’s is a major German 20th century artist whose work is held in MOMA and the National Gallery, among many other major institutions. I think his work is extremely affordable for now, which I think is very likely to change with time.
