Who else remembers this little spot next to Splash Mountain? There were some tables over there for a bit, but in general it was just a nice nook without any people (and you could get unique views of the ride). As much as I enjoy boarding the train at the Main Street station - the view across the esplanade is fantastic! - I always regret it when we get to the New Orleans Square station. Without fail I end up sitting there foreverrrrrr. I could literally get off, walk casually to the ToonTown station and still beat the train I was on with time to spare. And it’s a shame, because that part of the track is easily the best (although I’d hear arguments for the Grand Canyson section). I first visited Disney’s California Adventure in January 2003. At that point it was just short of its second birthday and in all honesty, it didn’t leave much of an impression (although Soarin’ Over California blew my mind). While we can argue all day about whether the park has gotten better or worse, I do think a bit of change has done it good. I got a new (used) lens! It’s a whopper: Tamron 200-500mm zoom. My idea was I’d go to Disneyland, find something I wanted to photograph and then get as far away from it as possible, while still maintaining a line of sight. This was a bad idea. Not only is the lens gigantic, awkward and heavy, but nowhere in the park could you possibly find enough space to open up to 500mm. Look, I’m sure someone’s done it, but that person ain’t me. Even at 200mm I found myself struggling to get a decent composition, especially at night. We live and learn! Fo sho! Not a great picture, I know, but it does feature two of the iconic letters that used to spell out California in front of the park entrance. I shot this on 35mm slide film (and I definitely didn’t have a tripod with me), so for a handheld nighttime shot I don’t think it’s terrible. It also features the Golden Gate Bridge where the monorail crossed and some of the original facade on either side (and a glimpse of the giant sun water fountain that would be replaced by Carthay Circle Restaurant). The only time I ever rode the giant Ferris wheel was that first trip in ‘03. It was terrifying (and I wasn’t even in the swinging gondola). You do get some amazing views, though!
