In 1959, multiple new attractions debuted in Disneyland. Among them was the Submarine Voyage The attraction vehicles were designed to resemble real submarines, which allowed guests visiting the theme park to dive right below the surface of the water and take in the incredible views of the undersea life in the tropical lagoon Guests who were visiting Disneyland in 1959 were treated to a to little more than just a submarine ride — the lagoon was home to live mermaids! (Well, sort of) Disney would cast live mermaids who spent their days flippin’ their fins around the beautiful tropical lagoon. Whether you were enjoying the Submarine Voyage attraction or you were taking the monorail into Tomorrowland, guests were able to spot the mermaids enjoying the sun on a rock or splashin’ around in the water The live mermaids only appeared in Tomorrowland during the summer of 1959 and three other seasons between 1965 and 1967. I'm sure you all figured out these scenes were from "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", by Jules Verne! This novel was originally published in 1870. I'm a huge fan of science fiction, and Jules Verne is one of my all-time favorite authors. -Scene 1 - The initial sightings of the "sea monster". -Scene 2 - Dr. Aronnax and Conseil join Captain Farragut on the Abraham Lincoln. -Scene 3 - The Nautilus' opulent interior, including a library, art, and underwater specimens. -Scene 4 - Captain Nemo plays the piano-organ. -Scene 5 - The island natives try to invade the Nautilus, but they encounter electric cables. -Scene 6 - In the submarine forest, the captives use electric guns to kill prey. -Scene 7 - The captives attend a breathtaking underwater burial. -Scene 8 - The Nautilus becomes trapped in the ice near the South Pole. -Scene 9 - Captain Nemo unveils an enormous pearl. -Scene 10 - The Nautilus encounters a colossal squid. On June 14, 1959, the Submarine Voyage opened in Disneyland as one of the first rides to require an E ticket A major portion of the ride simulated the voyage under the Arctic Ocean’s polar ice cap undertaken by the nuclear submarine USS Nautilus on August 3, 1958 Guests could view seaweed, coral reefs, rock formations, and mysterious caves. Sea creatures like Sea Turtles, Barracuda, Moray Eel and many others could be viewed under the surface ‘Real’ mermaids could be seen for a while, sunning on the rocks and adding a fantastical feel to the attraction Submarine Voyage closed on September 8, 1998; at that time, it was reported that the attraction would reopen with a new theme by 2003, but that did not occur Films, such as Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet and The Little Mermaid were all considered as the theme of the the subs In June 2007, the attraction finally reopened and a major Pixar film had been chosen . "Rising From The Depths!" ------------------------------------------ #ShinyPrimalKyogre, #Pokémon number 382, making a grand appearance in the water of the #FindingNemoSubmarineVoyage ride at #Disneyland! ------------------------------------------ It's time for this #ARPhotographer to share another one of his #GOSnapshot(s) from his trip to Disneyland during the Holidays. Seeing how I took an #ARPhoto of the other #PrimalReversion #Pokemon about one year ago (when it debuted at the GO Tour: #Hoenn event in Las Vegas), it's about time I got around to photographing #PrimalKyogre in #PokémonGO. All I needed was the right location to use. Luckily, the #FindingNemo #SubmarineVoyage ride at Disneyland proved to be the ideal backdrop to capture this #HoennLegendary in a piece of #ARPhotography. Plus, I made sure to take this picture with a #ShinyKyogre to help this #WaterType, #LegendaryPokémon blend in better with the heavy shadows that were present in that part of the park in the afternoon. Now obviously, water and #NianticAR don't mix. So, getting the #SeaBasinPokemon to properly cooperate on that surface took some patience. More often than not, #Kyogre would float towards my direction. Other times, this #WaterPokemon couldn't be placed far enough away from the nearest surface. After a little bit of time in that spot, I was able to get the #WaterTypePokémon in the position you see in this photo. I like it the most out of all the takes I took. It makes it seem like Shiny, Primal Kyogre is jumping out of the water; which reminds me of the Mosasaurus from "Jurassic World"! What do you think? I'm a few weeks late uploading this to truly capitalize on Shadow Kyogre becoming Giovanni's latest Shadow Legendary, but better late than never I guess. Well, that's all for now. Before The Little Mermaid of Disney movie fame welcomed guests into Disneyland, you could find ‘real’ mermaid in the park During the summers of 1959–1967, female cast members dressed in mermaid costumes could be seen sun-bathing themselves and performing synchronized swimming and underwater stunts for four hours each day While this added an extra level of detail to the attraction, several mermaid performers reported health concerns, related to the submarines’ diesel exhaust fumes and the highly chlorinated water Unfortunately, Disney ended this feature in 1967 and replaced them with animatronic creations. Occasionally you can find some pretty unique items at your local gun and loan shop. I took my dad to pick up his new revolver and thought I would look for a replacement sliver chain. Then this Disneyland pendent caught my eye. I’ve never seen such a detailed sliver pendant like this for sale in Disneyland, and that’s because this pendant is an older piece. I decided not to pass up on it because I do collect some Disneyland memorabilia and did a little research when I got home. This pendant is from 1959 probably to commemorate the first expansion at Disneyland. On this hexagon pendant is Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, the Monorail, Rocket to the Moon, the Matterhorn, Mark Twain Riverboat and the Submarine Voyage. It’s stamped on the back Walt Disney Productions and Beau-Sterling. I think someone had this in a jewelry box for a long time because after I cleaned it, it’s in remarkably shape. I also found online another version of this in 14k gold. This is the sea serpent from Disneyland's Submarine Voyage ride, which operated from 1959-1998. This goofy guy was auctioned off in 2017 and is now in storage. The Disneyland Class of ‘59 - Matterhorn Bobsleds, Monorail, and the Submarine Voyage. All 3 attractions opened the same day. Matterhorn was both the first roller coaster built by Arrow Development (which helped build many of Disneyland’s opening day attractions), and the first roller coaster to use tubular steel track, which is now an industry standard. The Monorail, built by the German manufacturer ALWEG, was the first daily operating monorail system in the Western Hemisphere. As for the Subs, they were the first tracked underwater attraction built for an amusement park.
