Ti's the lull betwixt parcels when I twiddle my thumbs... As if! The life of a small business owning mother with a part time job never involves twiddling if any fingers or toes. I'm waiting and prepping for Sweet Read books and also getting things ready for July parcels, which will have a very special gift designed by one of my favourite designers @itsclairelyons Theme to be revealed soon but it'll be the perfect winter read. Did you get one of these cute as buttons by @nerdteacreations in the April Classic/Minimalist parcel? 📷 @thebookishkimmy

*Book Review* The Crucible by Arthur Miller From the back cover of the book: "Based on historical people and real events, Miller's drama is a searing portrait of a community engulfed by hysteria. In the rigid theocracy of Salem, rumors that women are practicing witchcraft galvanize the town's most basic fears and suspicions; and when a young girl accuses Elizabeth Proctor of being a witch, self-righteous church leaders and townspeople insist that Elizabeth be brought to trial. The ruthlessness of the prosecutors and the eagerness of neighbor to testify against neighbor brilliantly illuminates the destructive power of socially sanctioned violence." I actually listened to the audiobook for this one and it was done with a full cast. This audiobook was phenomenally done and the way it was narrated at times made it feel very creepy in certain parts…the ominous tones of voices and chantings and such in the audiobook all made the read very atmospheric. There were some things I really didn't like in this book; but to share about those would give spoilers. Suffice it to say, I felt very sorry for John Proctor's wife. Yet, despite the things I didn't like in the story, it's important to note that one of the points of this story is reminding readers of a true scenario that really happened in history involving the hysteria of witchcraft that sweeped Salem at that time, albeit in a fictionalized play where things may not have been 100% accurate. In that, I think it succeeded, especially in showing how accusations of witchcraft were used to get back at people. I did find it interesting that Judge Hathorne was in this play. That’s a connection to my reading of The Scarlet Letter and learning more about Nathaniel Hawthorne. Again, the audiobook was excellent and had me not wanting to put it down at times. Still, this wasn’t a favorite for mine honestly. I gave it 3.50 stars largely for the audiobook performance. #bookreview #bookthoughts #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramcommunity #bookblogger #bookblogging #bookblog #bookbloggersofinstagram #bookishthoughts #ilovebooks #ilovereading #readtheclassics #classicliterature #classicplays #readingtheclassics

Can Anything Good Come Out of History? is a collection of fourteen Lectures and Papers on Nigerian History, spread over the years 1977 to 2013. Like his earlier book - History, The Historian And The Nation, the Voice of A Nigerian Historian, the burden of the lectures put together in this book is to demonstrate that History is not the useless discipline it is so often portrayed to be in our nation: that Nigeria and all her component entities, and the loyalties attached to them are products of History; that whether we realise it or not, it is History that provides that understanding of our country's multifarious peoples and their cultures which is so crucial for peaceful co-existence. We need the knowledge which only History can provide to enable us overcome ethnic prejudice and arrogance, as well as enable us promote an attitude of “live and let liveâ€. History may not prepare those who study it for a specific profession. Perhaps that is why our nation has, for so many years, neglected the promotion of the study of Nigerian History, as well as the history of other lands. Since its immediate success in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has remained one of the most popular novels in the English language. Jane Austen called this brilliant work "her own darling child" and its vivacious heroine, Elizabeth Bennet, "as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print." The romantic clash between the opinionated Elizabeth and her proud beau, Mr. Darcy is a splendid performance of civilized sparring. And Jane Austen's radiant wit sparkles as her characters dance a delicate quadrille of flirtation and intrigue, making this book the most superb comedy of manners of Regency England. Our Classics Book Club meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 7pm, so mark your calendars and join us for our discussion of "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen on June 19th (Juneteenth). . . . . . . . . . . #classicbooks #janeausten #prideandprejudice #classicliterature #readtheclassics #bookclub #kankakeebookclub #bookclubsinkankakee #kankakeebookstore #cityofkankakee #kankakeecounty #illinoisbookstores #downtownkankakee #loveandreadbooks #penguinclassics #penguindropcaps #randomnumberlit

Y'all...I did it. I signed up for the Ulysses Listen-along with @listenwithaudrey. I found out about this listen-along from @salboreads and knew it was a good opportunity to have some hand-holding for this big work. But I hem-hawed around and waffled and just couldn't make up my mind. This book makes me nervous. Nervous as in I'm very intimidated by this book because I've heard how difficult it is. I am almost 100% sure I will need help with this. No. I'm not almost sure. I know without a doubt I will need help with it! That's why this listen-along opportunity is just too good to pass up. @salboreads has talked before about how much she loves listening to audiobooks with @listenwithaudrey and I've been curious about it before I even heard about this listen-along. And she's talked about the guides Audrey has that are great. So why not give it a try with a book that I know I will need help with? So, with some encouragement from Sally and a lovely invitation from @listenwithaudrey, I've decided to take the plunge and give this a go. Did I mention I'm nervous about this book? 😁 I will probably order this book in print so I can follow along with the print while I listen. Anyone have recommendations for a good edition to get? If you'd like to join in with the Ulysses Listen-along, check out @listenwithaudrey's page for more info. #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstagramcommunity #booklover #bibliophile #booknerd #booksofinstagram #readersofinstagram #booksbooksbooks #bookblogger #bookblogging #ilovebooks #ilovereading #bookblog #bookbloggersofinstagram #audiobooks #readtheclassics #classicliterature #listentobooks #classicbooks

A passionate manifesto decrying misogyny in the Arab world, by an Egyptian American journalist and activist. When the Egyptian journalist Mona Eltahawy published an article in Foreign Policy magazine in 2012 titled Why Do They Hate Us it provoked a firestorm of controversy. The response it generated, with more than four thousand posts on the website, broke all records for the magazine, prompted dozens of follow-up interviews on radio and television, and made it clear that misogyny in the Arab world is an explosive issue, one that engages and often enrages the public. In Headscarves and Hymens, Eltahawy takes her argument further. Drawing on her years as a campaigner and commentator on women's issues in the Middle East, she explains that since the Arab Spring began, women in the Arab world have had two revolutions to undertake one fought with men against oppressive regimes, and another fought against an entire political and economic system that treats women in countries from Yemen and Saudi Arabia to Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya as second-class citizens. Eltahawy has traveled across the Middle East and North Africa, meeting with women and listening to their stories. Her book is a plea for outrage and action on their behalf, confronting the toxic mix of culture and religion that few seem willing or able to disentangle lest they blaspheme or offend. A manifesto motivated by hope and fury in equal measure, Headscarves and Hymens is as illuminating as it is incendiary. “Basic education, sometimes known as Home Upbringing matters, and nurturing remains a dedicated undertaking. Internet accessibility is no substitute. Like the lyrics of that ancient Lagosian song 'Eko gb'ole o gb'ole', Internet accommodates robber and indolent in equal, non-discriminating measure. The fact however remains that facts do remain facts, and one incontestable fact is that at no time did WS make any pronouncement, public or private, that invited any of these posturing mutants to come and 'play with him', least of all on a bicycle that even he has never considered his, only borrowed for a term, liable to be reclaimed or relinquished by either contracting party.” Taken somewhat aback by the unexpectedly viral response which accompanied his decision to keep his promise to destroy his American Green Card, if Donald Trump was elected president, Soyinka – with the help of a few other contributors to this volume – takes on his trolls - online as well as off. It's #SherlockHolmes Day today! When I was growing up, my mom watched Sherlock Holmes movies on a weekly basis. I learned so much about his character through film, and then later on, I enjoyed reading more about him as I got older. Today, I'm sharing two fabulous resources that will introduce young readers to this brilliant London-based detective! The First Adventure of Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Scarlet is a beautifully illustrated version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first novel featuring Sherlock Holmes. This stunning edition has 80 illustrations by artist Vincent Mallie, lovely rounded edges on the cover, and a satin ribbon bookmark. What a wonderful way to bring Sherlock Holmes to life for young readers! The First Adventure of Sherlock Holmes: A Study in Scarlet By Arthur Conan Doyle Illustrated by Vincent Mallie @magneticpress Thanks so much to @pubspotlight for sending me this one! Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles is a part of the Usborne Graphic Classics series. It's such a creative way to introduce young readers to classic works. When I was 11 years old, I was out sailing with my father. He gave me this book which I read that summer. We planned that when I would graduate from school, we would sail around the world. He died when I was 14. Now I’m doing our voyage around the world and I feel he is with me. The book passed by me again out here in the Pacific, so it was time to read it again. ❤️ It’s about an old fisherman, way out at sea and his struggle to bring in the biggest fish he’s caught in his long life. Hemingway is not poetic or has an elaborate way of describing things. It’s simple but in a way more real. It feels like you’re hanging with the locals. The old man is old school; having deep respect and love for the sea and the fish who dwell there. “You are killing me, fish, the old man thought. But you have a right to. Never have I seen a greater, or more beautiful, or a calmer or more noble thing than you, brother. Come on and kill me. I do not care who kills who.” The book not only puts you in the boat but also in the old man’s head. I loved to follow his dialogue with himself. The fight is truly on and he is old, but tough and at the same time, showing so much admiration to the one he is about to kill. “Fish, he said softly, aloud, Í’ll stay with you until I am dead.`” A short book which you can read in a day and is actually quite gripping. Man against the elements of nature and who is prepared to fight till the end. A marvellous book filled with virtue and authenticity. A book worthy to have in your bookshelf. 👌 For more book reviews @j0jos_passion_4books #theoldmanandthesea #ernesthemingway #hemingway #readtheclassics #classicreads #bookstagram #booklover #bookreview #readmorebooks #reading #fictionbooks #1000bookstoreadbeforeyoudie #booksbooksbooks #boatreading #booksonboard #sailingaroundtheworld #circumnavigation #boatlibrary #readeverything #sailinglifestyle #oldmanandthesea #bookrecommendations #bookreviewer #readinginthepacific #booksiborrow

#sappho #sapphopoetry #penguinblackclassics @penguinclassics #mareikeliest #seitengeraschel #einregalvollergelesenerbücher #reisedurchmeinbücherregal #whatareyoureading #readtheclassics #booknerd #nieohnebuch #bookstagram #bookstagramgermany #klassikerlesen #booksandcoffee #lesezeit

Saying a fine farewell to the Classic Book Only option! 👋 Why? Australia Post have changed the letter post pricing and policies. Not only is it more expensive to send a letter, but it will take longer to arrive. This means that I'd have to charge $17.50 for a Classic Book Only subscription. It just doesn't seem worth it hey? So I've made the decision to pull the plug on it. Otherwise, everything else is tickety boo! Classic, Minimalist and Minimal Minimalist parcels will be going out the door this week! Whoop!

This will be an unpopular opinion, but I’ll start by saying that I am not typically a romance reader, although I like to pick up a current release. I have read all of this author’s books - some I’ve enjoyed, others not as much. This latest one falls into the latter category. Have you read this new release?📖 Funny Story follows Daphne and Miles, who come together under unusual circumstances. Their exes are now engaged; in fact, Daphne’s fiance left her just days before the wedding. What happens next is quite predictable.🥱 I understand the appeal of these books: they have short chapters and light, easy-to-read storylines, making them perfect for sunny day reading. However, this one fell flat for me. I found it easy to put down, and even though I did finish, it won’t have a lasting impression. I am definitely an outlier here as these books are loved by many. If you are looking for a romance, you may enjoy this one! ⭐️⭐️💫 . @tolovetoread #tolovetoread #read #reader #reading #readersofig #readthisbook #book #books #bookstagram #bookworm #bookish #booklife #bookreviewer #bibliophile #bookishcanadians #booksofig #booksof2024 #bookthoughts #bookaddict #readtheclassics #bookrecommendations .

One of these things is not like the others 🤫 …or is it? Don’t have time to read the classics this summer? Maybe you can settle for my distillation of them… let me explain how my favorite books influence my writing: The Count of Monte Cristo - This book is an exploration of the concept of human justice and divine justice. Moby Dick - This book is an exploration of the human response to holiness and divine prerogative. Robinson Crusoe - This book is an exploration of divine providence and human dominion on earth. Huck Finn? - Well, this book is an exploration of humanity in its fallen state - the absurdity of it all - the humor, the joys, the evils, the sorrows, and our limitations. These, my four favorite works of fiction, were the marinade that I soaked Highwayman in, leaving you, dear reader, with a digestible, delicious, and compact morsel for your imagination. This is a sequel to Nobel Prize-winner Wole Soyinka's previous volumes of autobiography, "Ake" and "Isara". It tells the story of Maren, Soyinka's alter ego, as he moves from schooldays in Ibadan to student days in Leeds, stints as a play reader in London, an abortive attempt to become a cafe singer in Paris, travels to other parts of the world, and finally a post as research fellow in drama back in Ibadan. Throughout all his travels he becomes increasingly antagonistic to the corrupt authorities, opposing them firstly through writing and then by direct action. Travel, if you are willing to exit the tourist areas, is a great way to understand other places and its people and, probably more important, yourself. A good book can do the same. The best books are timeless and universal. They illuminate the human condition, helping readers to understand themselves and others because, really, they are one and the same. Fun Fact: in the books the Wicked Witch of the West does not have a name, but in Gregory Maguire's Wicked series he names her Elphaba as a tribute to Baum's initials (LFB) (thanks to my husband for that tidbit 😊). I'm taking my daughter to see Wicked on Broadway this summer and we can't wait! . . . #lfrankbaum #thewizardofoz #rarebooks #collectablebooks #nevernotreading #readtheclassics #readallthebooks #pickwickbooks #waterdownvillage #vintagebooks #firstedition

Nobel Laureate in Literature Wole Soyinka considers all of Africa--indeed, all the world--as he poses this once repression stops, is reconciliation between oppressor and victim possible? In the face of centuries-long devastation wrought on the African continent and her Diaspora by slavery, colonialism, Apartheid, and the manifold faces of racism, what form of recompense could possibly suffice? In a voice as eloquent and humane as it is forceful, Soyinka boldly challenges in these pages the notions of simple forgiveness, confession, and absolution as strategies for social healing. Ultimately, he turns to art--poetry, music, painting, etc.--as the one source that can nourish the seed of art is the generous vessel that can hold together the burden of memory and the hope of forgiveness. Based on Soyinka's Stewart-McMillan lectures delivered at the DuBois Institute at Harvard, The Burden of Memory speaks not only to those concerned specifically with African politics, but also to anyone seeking the path to social justice through some of history's most inhospitable terrain. A fascinating journey into Islam's diverse history of ideas, making an argument for an "Islamic Enlightenment" today In Reopening Muslim Minds , Mustafa Akyol, senior fellow at the Cato Institute and opinion writer for The New York Times , both diagnoses “the crisis of Islam” in the modern world, and offers a way forward. Diving deeply into Islamic theology, and also sharing lessons from his own life story, he reveals how Muslims lost the universalism that made them a great civilization in their earlier centuries. He especially demonstrates how values often associated with Western Enlightenment ― freedom, reason, tolerance, and an appreciation of science ― had Islamic counterparts, which sadly were cast aside in favor of more dogmatic views, often for political ends. Elucidating complex ideas with engaging prose and storytelling, Reopening Muslim Minds borrows lost visions from medieval Muslim thinkers such as Ibn Rushd (aka Averroes), to offer a new Muslim worldview on a range of sensitive human rights, equality for women, freedom of religion, or freedom from religion. While frankly acknowledging the problems in the world of Islam today, Akyol offers a clear and hopeful vision for its future. I love a good sunset -- who doesn't! -- and I've been playing around with different ways to represent the beauty of dusk digitally. This illustration is an adaptation of my cover illustration for the book Heidi, which is a little more bright and cheery. Heidi images a fire the first time she sees a sunset in the mountains, and she is in awe of its beauty. As a reader, through Heidi's words, you can imagine exactly the beauty she is enthralled by. . #childrensbooks #kidsbooks #childrensliterature #classicliterature #readtheclassics #illustrator #illustration #childrensbookillustration #bookstagram #subscriptionbox #igreads #instabooks #bookish #heidi #johannaspyri

Book review ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ To Kill a Mockingbird-Harper Lee This story focuses on Atticus Finch ( and his family) a lawyer who decides to represent a black man (Tom Robinson) who is accused of raping a white woman. The story is told from the view point of Scout, the daughter of Atticus finch. Through out the book, we get a glimpse of what life was like in 1930s Alabama and how black people and their allies were treated at the time. We are introduced to characters like Boo Radley, Calpurnia, Jem Finch, Dill and Booby Ewell amongst others. The novel explores themes of racism and prejudice, lying, good and evil in the world, law and the existence of social inequality. It is believed that Harper Lee was inspired by her father ( also a lawyer a in real life) unsuccessful attempt to defend to African American men accused of killing a white man. Most of the characters were based on people she knew. For instance Dill is based on her childhood friend Truman Capote. Words can’t fully encapsulate all the emotions I experienced while reading this book. The most moving part for me was Atticus closing argument. It’s simply one of the books you MUST read for yourself in order to understand why it’s one of the most successful books of all time! #explorepage #booklover #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #bookstagram #bookshelf #bookstareviewweek #bookaddict #reading #readtheclassics

Did you know the author of our April Classic is really a woman? Henry Handell Richardson was the pen name of Ethel Florence Lindsay, an Australian author in late 1800s Victoria. Apart from The Getting of Wisdom where this quote comes from, she wrote 6 other novels, 4 short story collections and a memoir. I love it when the Classic book is also by an Aussie author. Have you read any of her work?

I’m a big fan of this author. Her books are the perfect escape, especially while I’m in the midst of slow reading two classics. This one took me a little longer to finish and it was just ok for me. Have you had the chance to read this new release?📖 Darling Girls tells the story of the intertwined lives of Jessica, Alicia and Norah, bonded by their shared upbringing in the foster care of a dysfunctional, abusive woman. When human remains are discovered under their former foster home, the police request the three women to return, to shed light on their past. What is discovered, shocks them all.😳 This story shifts between past and present, each character offering their own perspective. I really enjoy this format and the short chapters. While the story was gripping, I found it easy to set aside, but I still wanted to see how it ended. Not my favourite by this author, but there are lots of people who really loved this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ . @tolovetoread #tolovetoread #read #reader #reading #readersofig #readthisbook #book #books #bookstagram #bookworm #bookish #booklife #bookreviewer #bibliophile #bookishcanadians #booksofig #booksof2024 #bookthoughts #bookaddict #readtheclassics #bookrecommendations .

From two-time Caine Prize finalist Elnathan John, a dynamic young voice from Nigeria, Born on a Tuesday is a stirring, starkly rendered first novel about a young boy struggling to find his place in a society that is fracturing along religious and political lines. In far northwestern Nigeria, Dantala lives among a gang of street boys who sleep under a kuka tree. During the election, the boys are paid by the Small Party to cause trouble. When their attempt to burn down the opposition’s local headquarters ends in disaster, Dantala must run for his life, leaving his best friend behind. He makes his way to a mosque that provides him with food, shelter, and guidance. With his quick aptitude and modest nature, Dantala becomes a favored apprentice to the mosque’s sheikh. Before long, he is faced with a terrible conflict of loyalties, as one of the sheikh’s closest advisors begins to raise his own radical movement. When bloodshed erupts in the city around him, Dantala must decide what kind of Muslim—and what kind of man—he wants to be. Told in Dantala’s naïve, searching voice, this astonishing debut explores the ways in which young men are seduced by religious fundamentalism and violence. I thought it would be fun to share favorites from my own childhood! My origin as a reader lies in these books (and many more I can’t fit 😢). I was lucky enough to have plenty of others read to me—WRINKLE IN TIME, CHARLOTTE’S WEB, LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE—but the ones above were standalones and series that I read to myself, each one transporting me to places I never imagined, kindling a love of story and storytelling that propels me today. 🥰 • Dating myself here…but anyone else see a favorite? IN A DARK, DARK ROOM by Alvin Schwartz (5-8); I will never get “The Green Ribbon” out of my head 🤣 (devastates me that Dirk Zimmer’s original art has been sacrificed for today’s edition!) HARRIET THE SPY by Louise Fitzhugh (8-12); a place to channel my nosiness! ALL-OF-A-KIND FAMILY by Sydney Taylor (8-12); one of my greatest parenting joys was watching my daughter fall in love with this turn-of-the-century NYC family as I had MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN by Jean Craighead George (8-12); my obsession was so real that for years I only used cold water to wash my face so I could pretend I was bathing in a mountain stream 😜 BEEZUS AND RAMONA by Beverly Cleary (8-12); when I read this series aloud to my own kids, I was ❤️ at how well it holds up! TALES OF A FOURTH GRADE NOTHING by Judy Blume (8-12); didn’t know it was possible to laugh so hard in a book 🐢 THE WOLVES OF WILLOUGHBY CHASE by Joan Aiken (8-12); definitely worth a few nightmares THE WITCHES by Roald Dahl (8-12); still my favorite Dahl because it ROCKED MY WORLD THE EGYPT GAME by Zilpha Keatley Snyder (8-12); the book that fueled an obsession with Ancient Egypt (and taking a match to the edges of paper to age it 😉) THE WOULD-BE WITCH by Ruth Chew (7-10); forever grateful to the Milwaukee librarian who turned me on to an entire shelf of these books about magic happening to ordinary kids • #raisingreaders #bookworm #lovetoread #classicchildrensbooks #readtheclassics #kidlit #whattoreadtoyourkids

The House of Islam seeks to provide entry to the minds and hearts of Muslims the world over. It introduces us to the fairness, kindness and mercy of Mohammed; the aims of sharia law, through commentary on scripture, to provide an ethical basis to life; the beauty of Islamic art and the permeation of the divine in public spaces; and the tension between mysticism and literalism that still threatens the House of Islam. The decline of the Muslim world and the current crises of leadership mean that a glorious past, full of intellectual nobility and purpose, is now exploited by extremists and channelled into acts of terror. How can Muslims confront the issues that are destroying Islam from within, and what can the West do to help work towards that end? Ed Husain guides us through the nuances of Islam and its people, contending that the Muslim world need not be a stranger to the West, nor its enemy, but a peaceable ally. ꧁𝗖𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻t꧂ Reading Crime and Punishment was quite the experience, filled with intrigue, horror, delirium, friendship, and psychological philosophy. From the outset, the story envelops you in a veil of ambiguity, with the lead character restless and brewing a mysterious plan of which we the reader are not initially privy to. As the narrative unfolds, we witness Raskolnikov’s complex character, oscillating between moments of compassion and bouts of madness. Despite the dark tone at the start, his instinctual concern for vulnerable individuals surprises and intrigues, challenging my initial assumptions about his nature. There are moments in the novel where Dostoevsky masterfully employs dreams to paint vivid pictures of the characters’ torments, traumas, and vices. Themes of fate, justice, and the nature of humanity are woven into philosophical and psychological debates, often punctuated by moments of sarcasm and wit that lightens the narrative and adds a bit of colour to the otherwise chronic misery. One of the novel’s highlights is the introduction of Porfiry Petrovich, whose hypnotic rhetoric helps unravel Raskolnikov’s delirium and brings order to the chaos. As the story progresses, philosophical discussions intensify, prompting introspection on the nature of crime, morality, and human suffering. In the end, 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 is not just a tale of crime and its repercussions; it’s a profound examination of the human condition, filled with explorations of what it means to be human amidst moral dilemmas and societal condemnation.

Read the classics... Even if it takes forever. Even if some of it goes over your head. There is much to be learned and much to enjoy from things that existed before you started circling the sun. Individually, these are short reads, here are my faves. Benito Cereno could be made into a really cool movie or FX mini series. A Simple Heart is a lesson in telling a big story with few words. Ward No. 6 is a hauntingly disturbing lesson on complacency. The Metamorphosis... holy cow! I can not believe this is the first time I have read this. (Especially since @sherilyn_fennxo spent a good portion of the 90's telling me to read it. IYKYK #mtv). What must people have thought of Kafka at the time? In the year 2018, African startups surpassed $700 million in annual investments, from 450+ deals. All across the continent, people are deploying the power of digital platforms to make change happen. The last decade has seen a rise in new businesses, including online betting, new media powerhouses and the continued rise of Africa’s cultural superstars. Omojuwa captures all of these and more as he makes a data-backed argument that digital holds economic prospects for those on the continent willing to explore the power of technology. This power can also be wielded in socio-political contexts. It is being used to take a solid stand for gender justice and has helped to expose corruption at scale. Though the digital space comes with challenges – such as access and security – its benefits promise to make good. Digital: The New Code of Wealth argues that the digital space offers the continent an opportunity to create collectives that can thrive together over the plethora of challenges being faced. Cup of Gold by John Steinbeck I've been working on reading Steinbeck's works after having been blown away by East of Eden and re-reading The Grapes of Wrath. Then bookish serendipity occurred with a buddy read of The Moon is Down with @yono.literati. And in our chatting, she mentioned she was thinking about slowly reading through Steinbeck's works in chronological order! I love it! So we started with Cup of Gold this past weekend. Cup of Gold is an historical fiction account of the life of Sir Henry Morgan. Morgan was a buccaneer in the 1600s who was known to be utterly ruthless. When you read parts of the introduction, you are left with the impression that this book is going to be a weird, far-out type of story. It does include appearances of Merlin in a swashbuckling tale. However, I didn’t think it was far out at all! In this fictional work we have an account of a pirate told in classic Steinbeck style. Brilliant, descriptive, evocative. Steinbeck really gets into the thought process of Morgan and shows how Morgan was obsessed with fame, glory, and even wealth. He touches on certain topics in such a poignant way that powerfully unveils the cause and effect triangle created. And he doesn't shy away from showing horrific actions committed by the buccaneers and their cohorts. I really think Steinbeck did an excellent job of bringing Sir Henry Morgan to life on the page. I also appreciated that he gave historical context. Some of the beliefs/ideals of the time are angering and really hard to swallow. But the historical context is important. I’ve read many reviews that say don’t go into this book expecting another story on the level of The Grapes of Wrath. After all, this was Steinbeck’s first novel. But I certainly didn’t feel like Steinbeck’s writing was amateurish at all. In fact, I think it was well written overall (despite the fact that there was some confusion on some names early on…..). I really enjoyed this one and look forward to our next Steinbeck read! *Continued in comments*
