It may always feel like that to others that don’t experience what adenomyosis and endometriosis does to a women. I’m simply raising awareness about the illness that affects 1 in 10 women and we are no where near a cure or a cause as to why is happens to women. During my journey with chronic illness I’ve truly seen the real side to the people I thought were my friends or cared for me. Truth is when I always talk about Adeno and Endo I’ve been told I’m complaining, but honestly I am not. I started my blog because I was fed up of not being listened to. Let’s talk about Adeno and Endo in the workplace. Last month I did a webinar with @Endometriosisuk where I spoke about my own lived experience of having adeno and endo in the workplace. I spoke about my most recent negative experience I had with my last organisation where they simply didn’t want to make adjustments for me and were trying to manage me out of the organisation. This is simply unacceptable from employers. It wasn’t just this employer but before I knew I had the condition and years of being dismissed I would be let go from my job because of period pains! How crazy is this right, a condition that i did not choose to have but I’m having to put up with mis treatment, discrimination against my chronic illness and constantly having to justify myself to others about how I am not feeling well. Having worked in HR for some time I feel that conditions like adenomyosis, endometriosis, PCOS need a framework around how to manage it effectively for women who suffer from these conditions. We shouldn’t have to always ask for support, we should just be believed and given the right support so that we can thrive in our careers. We are 1 in 10, but 1 and 6 decide to simply give up on their careers due to a lack of support…and this is simply not okay! This is why we need more funding and more research for Adenomyosis and Endometriosis. However I’ve still been here, paying off what I can, cutting my cloth where I can and basically trying to get my finances in order. The list is endless and as time has progressed with having Adeno and Endo, I am struggling the most with the mental toll it takes. It’s a vicious circle of feeling absolutely horrid about myself and what my future holds. I don’t think people who don’t have adeno and endo know how the condition takes over you mentally and what sorts of thoughts go through the mind on a daily basis. The worst part is that when you go see your GP they will be quick to patch you up with some anti depressants and tell you it’s all in your head. For years I’ve been told to go on the pill or the anti depressants but it’s not going to solve or cure my adeno and endo. As per my period tracker I’m one day away from starting my period, and I’m having all of the above symptoms. I can’t believe what a difference 12 months make! I look back at this time last year and I was floored with fatigue, even looking back, it was probably as far back as 2020, where it was slowly getting progressively worse. I honestly wondered how l’d ever get back to this place, I was struggling to see a way out! But I was that person that would just push through regardless of how I felt - and boy have I learnt the hard way! It’s like one minute I would be fine, the next minute I needed to crawl into bed, which I did and would nap for 1-2 hours a day and sleep all night. As for the brain fog, I swear I thought I had dementia. I would sit there and it was like a switch just went off in my head and I was just sat in space. I was struggling to find my words. It was like my head was filled with treacle, heavy and nothing made any sense any more. Everything just feels that little bit harder! I wanted to give up my business, everything I had built, I was ready to quit! I honestly thought I’d be too fit or something and not even know I’d have it, but the thing with peri menopause is we don’t all have the same symptoms or same severity, it’s so unique. For months I went back and forth to the doctors questioning what was wrong with me. It stopped my life a lot! Then finally, a GP listened to me and agreed to let me try HRT and within 3 days, I saw a glimpse of me again. Now don’t get me wrong, there are time when my ‘off switch’ appears, with literally no warning, but I know how to manage it! Now I’m back doing everything I’ve always done. And as well as HRT I’ve really focused on my nutrition, stress, rest and recovery. I have tweaked my nutrition, making sure I don’t skip meals and this has made a huge impact on managing my symptoms. This is me at 11 years old. I look at her and I think, ‘you look so happy’ but I know that there were parts of her that had the same atrocious thinking patterns that I do now. I used to give away my favourite things to other little girls so they would be my friend, even if it only lasted for a day. I would look at myself and think I was the tallest, gangliest and ugliest girl in my class, I used to be paranoid that people were talking about me and I used to tell myself daily that my mum loved my brother more than me. Lots of that hasn’t changed, but I keep this photo now in my bag to remind myself of how unhealthy thinking patterns can destroy so many years of your life without any outcome whatsoever. Now I look at her and think how cute she looked, cute, innocent and with her whole world ahead of her.
