We would like to give a massive shout-out to Rotary Club of Empangeni who successfully facilitated an International Rotary Medical Grant for Butterfly Home to purchase new medical equipment and do staff training. This grant took two years to come to fruition and various stakeholders were involved. The end result was the purchase of incredible equipment including new syringe drivers, feeding pumps, patient monitors, oxygen and suction units, diagnostic sets and even a brand-new ultrasound machine! 🙌🏻 Our staff are so excited and said it feels like working in a hospital now! ❤️ Thank you, Rotary, for selflessly serving your communities and bringing hope and joy to the world! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 @rotaryinternational 🦋🦋🦋
Conversations between staff during rounds: “He bounces back just as fast as he crashes down doesn’t he?” “You’re new, you’ll learn! Don’t trust him!” . He has a reputation…. Thankfully he’s still on the bounce back. . Last night he came off of all sedation and was able to start waking up. Today his picc line was removed - tomorrow they’ll check to see how the clot is doing (praying for good results). He had some issues with withdrawal and vomiting, and some questionable X-rays, but he had a great day at the hospital with dad and some fun play time with visitors. . Welcome to having Crohn's, Colitis, Interstitial Cystitis, Overactive Bladder, Fibromyalgia, Endometriosis, chronic pain, chronic nausea/vomiting, & an infection in my stomach lining... H. Pylori sucks. I'm still in a bit of shock because I didn't think my Crohn's Disease had spread into my stomach & duodenum. I knew it had spread, but I didn't think it was this bad. Same goes for my Colitis. It spread a bit as well. I just didn't think I'd have H. Pylori on top of it. It's being treated aggressively with 3 antibiotics for the next 2 weeks. I'm so sick of medications. I have surgery coming up, an ultrasound coming up, more specialists, etc. It's pretty busy with medical stuff & has been ever since I got sick. I'm still alive & breathing even after they said I most likely won't make it to 30. It took 3 weeks, but I finally tested negative for Covid. For those of you who have reached out or have felt concern, I hope you know how very much I appreciate you. 💚 To celebrate, The Boy took me to lunch and to run errands. It was the first time I’d left the house in almost a month other than doctor and vet appointments, and it felt amazing to do the things again that we all take for granted. I thought I could handle something low-key like this. But the next day I slept until 9am and never made it out of my pajamas due to exhaustion. It reminded me a lot of how I felt immediately post-transplant. Two steps forward, one step back, and nothing like normal. I hate to think of myself as fragile— it truly pisses me off after all the hard work I’ve done to build my strength and overall health. But this entire month has been and will continue to be one spent trying to rebuild what was stolen by Covid and RSV attacking my suppressed immune system. May is Anencephaly Awareness Month, and On Angels' Wings recipient, Caroline, is featured in OAW's 2024 Awareness Calendar for this month. At 12 weeks gestation, Caroline was diagnosed with anencephaly. Knowing the diagnosis was fatal outside the womb, her parents chose joy and spoiled Caroline in utero in any way they could. We are just days away from coming home! 🌼 Elaine's weight still isn't up, but she's tolerating all of her feeds through the tube. After she has two days of weight gain in a row, we will be able to go home with a plan. We aren't sure when we can offer her solid foods again, but we are offering her bottles by mouth, and she's just not interested in them anymore (this was starting to trend before we came into the hospital). Daytime hasn’t gone the best, and evenings are often the worst when he’s unwell. His fever is hanging out around 101, so it’s not crazy high, but it’s bringing chills and shaking with high heart rates and inconsolable crying that drops his oxygen levels. . Right now we’re walking the fine line of needing to call it and go into the hospital. At this point not even sure what for other than knowing he has a fever and there is some blood in his trach when suctioning. . I’m guessing it’s going to be a long night. And since he’s needing 4+ liters of oxygen when he has a hard moment, we won’t be able to drive him ourselves, so there’s a high probability of needing to call an ambulance for a ride to Iowa City. . Asmond's first solids! He did great with his teething biscuits this evening. Like, so good that he also learned a new sign "more." I'm very excited to see how he does with other foods as we add them. We still have a long road to not be tube dependent, but this was a HUGE step for Asmond! Arya's last day of kindergarten was today. She is sad to leave, but she is excited for first grade! I got to look over all of her end-of-the-year testing information and portfolio, and Arya has shown that she was already a smart cookie and that she got even smarter this year (to absolutely nobody's surprise)! I'm very proud of her! Asmond also had his genetics follow-up today. He is "doing everything he's supposed to be doing," which means that I have carted his happy little butt to every specialty clinic at Vanderbilt save for Cardiology, transplant, and oncology. Gold star for me 😂 Asmond also found out that he LOVES exam paper. Our Butterfly mamma, Tarryn, is currently working through one of Patch Academy's ( @patchpalliative ) exceptional online Paediatric Palliative Care Courses. The current module offers valuable insights into how children perceive and cope with death, and we felt compelled to share a small but meaningful portion of these insights with you. In her book The Private Worlds of Dying Children, Professor Myra Bluebond-Langner made the following observations about terminally ill children... MOST DYING CHILDREN: ⭐ Can understand that they have a serious illness by the age of 3 years. ⭐ Can understand that their illness is getting worse even if no one tells them. ⭐ Soon realise that adults find it difficult to talk about death. ⭐ May discover death is a safe topic to discuss with other children who are often eager to share information. ⭐ Learn to safely discuss their illness away from parents. ⭐ Are very frightened of separation, particularly from their family, but also from friends and from school. ⭐ Are frightened of pain. ⭐ May view illness and death primarily in terms of separation and pain. ⭐ Will not really understand the differences between curative and palliative approaches. 🦋🦋🦋

1 week out of the hospital & I am still pretty bruised up. Still pretty sore as well, but I'm managing so far. I will be starting an aggressive 2 week treatment once I get back home. My surgeon & pharmacy have found 2 meds that will work for me, we're looking for a replacement for the 3rd one that was prescribed but found out that medication contains a compound in it that I am allergic to so, I'm just waiting for that one to be replaced. It's a total of 3 meds for 2 weeks straight & then I have to do more tests. Hi, it's me, Elaine 😘 They won't get me out of here. I couldn't eat for three days because my tummy was still too sick. The first day was rough, and I was very hungry, but the IV food quickly comforted me. They keep saying that we can't go home on the bags of IV food, but I feel perfectly fine, never eating again, so they put this yucky tube back in my nose. They are slowly starting to feed me again, but we still have a long road ahead. I want to go see my friends up at Doernbecher, but mom says that we have big plans for other things this month if we get to go home... May is Anencephaly Awareness Month, and On Angels' Wings recipient, Abigail, is featured in OAW's 2024 Awareness Calendar for this month. At 16 weeks pregnant, Abigail's parents were told that their baby had anencephaly and was "incompatible with life." They were told by fourteen doctors that their baby would die in the womb. But Abigail was born and lived for an hour and eighteen minutes. She was surrounded by friends, family, her brother, and people that loved her deeply. Her short life made a profound impact. This photo was the evening before our hospitalization! Mary Elizabeth was suffering with rhinovirus and pneumonia. This past Thursday and Friday were probably a couple of the toughest days of my life. I had to make end-of-life decisions for Mary Elizabeth. As a Chaplain who works in hospital ICU’s, I am a part of the interdisciplinary team who meets with families who have to make these decisions for their loved one. This past week, I was on the other side. I wrestled and prayed over a DNR/DNI, organ donation and tracheostomy. Because I had education in all of this, I felt I had an advantage. Each circumstance is different for each family. No answer is right or wrong. But I encourage you to think about what you want for yourself when this happens to you. An adult with capacity makes their own decisions but children can’t so it was all me. I had to take myself out of the equation and look at the larger picture for Mary Elizabeth. Luckily, she is pulling through but now, LifeShare knows I want to donate her organs. Her pulmonologist and PCP know I don’t want a tracheotomy. DNR/DNI will be discussed with me during each situation due to her age and circumstances. Mary Elizabeth is my precious child who I Love more than anything. I am so thankful we are headed toward more time together. It has been a long couple months with our sweet Cy with being in and out of the hospital. During Cy’s short life he has been hospitalized more times than I can count. It's the little things.... Our 6-year-old has some special needs that requires us to keep her a little closer to one of us at all times. She wants to run and play with her siblings, be a big girl and do big girl things. Our 3-year-old is a protector, always watching out for her and staying right by her side so she can join in. Sometimes nursing looks like ⬅️ but when you find the right nurses, it looks like ➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️➡️ No matter what, nurses are amazing literal lifesavers, hands down. But our nurses, I cannot say enough about. They saved Jasper’s life on numerous occasions, were there for all his ups and downs, cried with me over good and bad news, knew when it was time to call 911, took him to school, drs apts and therapies, created activities to help him gain fine/gross motor skills, learned sign language so they could teach him sign language, introduced him to so many things and broadened his horizon greater than any parent could. And that’s why when we lost nursing (didn’t qualify for nursing due to Jasper being stable 🤯) in January, our nurses were promoted to Aunties. Jasper is who he is because of each one of you. My constant reminder of what I went through, that I pulled through & that I will pull through it all over again. After having a PICC Line for 7.5 months & a port-a-cath for 3 years, it really taught me just how strong I am. I kept my PICC Line & port-a-cath supplies as a reminder to myself that I could overcome anything after what I've been through.
