This pub has an interesting history. In 1803, the Black Lion pub gained notoriety due to reported ghost sightings in the area. Residents were on edge as a figure in white would startle women in a near by churchyard. This led to fear and tension in the community. On January 3, 1804, after a night of drinking, Francis Smith, a local resident, took action. In the 19th century, clothing often indicated oneβs occupation, which exacerbated a tragic case when a bricklayer, James Millwood, dressed in white, was mistaken for the ghost and met a tragic fate due to the vigilanteβs actions. Heading here to mark the end of a busy week π©΅ The public house known as The Bell was established in 1751, with the first recorded license in that year. By 1787, the name was changed to Bell & Crown. Fuller Smith & Turner acquired the pub in 1814. In the 1881 census, it was listed as βAt River Sideβ. It was reconstructed in its current form in 1907 after the neighbouring Ship Aground surrendered its license. The Bell & Crown expanded by taking over two adjacent shops in the 1980s, adding a large conservatory extension in 1984. Thinking back to a wonderful few days with The Macallan Team up in the Colorado mountains last week for the US launch of the newest expression in The Macallanβs incredible Fine and Rare Collection, the new 1990. This is actually the bottling thatβs already in the collection (Iβll post more about the new addition soon) Distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2013, the liquid was laid to rest in a European Oak Sherry Butt for 22 years which had a total outturn of 481 bottle equivalents, is presented at a natural cask strength of 58.2% ABV and possesses a color described as Rich Mahogany. ββββββββββββββββββββ Crafted without compromise. The Horse and Groom pub in Fitzrovia is an excellent and recent find of mine. It is a beautiful Victorian pub with plenty of original tiling and woodwork, etched glass and mirrors. It is own by Yorkshire brewer Samuel Smith and serves its excellent beers. With the stubborn wet and windy weather here to stay for a while longer I know I will be heading down the pub over the long bank holiday weekend. Thinking back to a wonderful few days with The Macallan Team up in the Colorado mountains last week for the US launch of the newest expression in The Macallanβs incredible Fine and Rare Collection, the new 1990. This is actually the bottling thatβs already in the collection (Iβll post more about the new addition soon) Distilled in 1990 and bottled in 2013, the liquid was laid to rest in a European Oak Sherry Butt for 22 years which had a total outturn of 481 bottle equivalents, is presented at a natural cask strength of 58.2% ABV and possesses a color described as Rich Mahogany. ββββββββββββββββββββ Crafted without compromise.
