We've been back in the Ingham region inspecting this pile field, which is looking good after all the rain. There are 800 wooden piles down there in rows. We put them in to solve erosion problems along a flood-damaged section of the Herbert River. The rows of piles are designed to slow down the water and build up sediment, to protect and repair damaged riverbank. In coming years, vegetation is expected to establish in and around the piles (we've done some reveg too) and as they break down, the vegetation will act as the long-term erosion solution. Plages des Hattes - Hattes beach - Yalimapo, Guyane Une des raisons de la baisse du nombre de pontes des tortues luth et autres espèces de tortues marines sur le littoral guyanais repose sur un problème local majeur qui prend de plus en plus d’ampleur ces dernières années, l’érosion du littoral. A Yalimapo, commune amérindienne au nord-ouest de la Guyane, l’océan ne cesse de grignoter la plage. Les amandiers et les cocotiers sont morts, couchés sur le sable. Le petit terrain de football a vue sa surface se réduire de moitié. La plage disparaît, les tortues manquent d’espace pour nidifier et certaines pondent à quelques mètres seulement de la route. Si on compare ces deux périodes, on voit bien que l’océan s’est rapproché des abris qui étaient à plusieurs mètres de la plage sur une partie herbeuse et que la tortue est venue pondre quasiment au milieu du terrain de jeu de la photo 2, à quelques mètres des voitures. - - - One of the reasons for the drop in the number of leatherback turtles and other marine turtle species laying eggs on French Guiana’s coastline is a major local problem that has become increasingly acute in recent years: coastal erosion. Step 1: Break down the dirt on the lawn to even out any slopes created by erosion. Step 2: Apply a 3 yard layer of 50/50 topsoil. Step 3: Apply a 4 yard layer of walnut designer mulch. Step 4: Apply a trench around the perimeter of the working area. It protects the foundation and ensures that the surrounding landscape is not affected. On the latest episode of Erosion control gone wrong. That wild weather that hit the Southeast Thursday took its toll on the ditch. Water overran the ditch and washed out the driveway. So it was back to the drawing board. I decided to dig a small basin and line it with some of the rock I dug out. Re-sloped it and drug all my gravel back into place for another round of rain.
