The rotation of Earth’s inner core may have paused and it could even go into reverse, new research suggests. The Earth is formed of the crust, the mantle and the inner and outer cores. The solid inner core is situated about 3,200 miles below the Earth’s crust and is separated from the semi-solid mantle by the liquid outer core, which allows the inner core to rotate at a different speed from the rotation of the Earth itself. With a radius of almost 2,200 miles, Earth’s core is about the size of Mars. It consists mostly of iron and nickel, and contains about one-third of Earth’s mass. Our Grade 6/7 students created continents as part of their introduction to Earth and Earth’s structure. The borders of these continent designs were created by dumping a small cup of rice on the paper and tracing the outline of where the rice fell. It was a fun way to take the thinking out of the creating of the foundation of the map, so that creativity could shine through in other areas. Students added geographic features to highlight some of the Earth’s many defining attributes and individualize their creations. Over the last month or so we’ve spent a lot of time talking about the early Earth and how its structure formed. We’ve discovered a lot about rocks and magma, and this has led to lots of questions about changes of state between solids and liquids. As a result we’ve ended up exploring this in lots of ways. Many of them were everyday chats about the liquids and solids we see, or when we observe the changes happening, but we’ve also done a few hands on activities to reinforce what we’ve been talking about. ⠀ 1) We made a thick sugar solution that flowed slowly like we pictured lava doing and filled a dish with it. Then we coloured some of it and used a syringe to put it at the bottom of the dish. We warmed the dish underneath the coloured spot and watched to see how the coloured solution rose. We talked about how warm fluids rise, and then fall again when they cool. We thought about how this might have occurred within the Earth. ⠀ 2) We made rice crispie cakes! We boiled water (liquid to gas) and use the steam to melt the chocolate (solid to liquid). We mixed solid rice crispies into the liquid chocolate, and then let the chocolate freeze (liquid to solid). We talked about how the liquid chocolate could represent the liquid rock that the very early Earth was made from, and that as it cooled it formed solid rock like our cakes. ⠀ 3) We heated some custard and then watched the skin form as it cooled. We compared the skin to the crust of the Earth, and the liquid custard underneath to the mantle inside Earth. ⠀ 4) We visited the Natural History Museum and looked at the displays and rock samples linked to what we’ve been learning. Ralph was really excited to find displays on things that he already knew about and understood and enjoyed seeing samples of things we’d talked about. ⠀ We’ve been talking about water forming on Earth recently, so we’re moving on to talk about the changes of state between a liquid and gas. #ChangesOfState #Liquid #Solid #KitchenScience #STEM #HomeEducation #Rock #Hadean #EarthStructure
On Sunday, we began to build an adobe tool shed at a workshop taught by Jon Jandai and Peggy Reents, friends who joined us from Thailand. As the building came together, everybody started saying “this is too nice to be a tool shed… somebody is going to move in!” Adobe is a simple and forgiving way to build with natural materials. In just a few hours, we covered mud and straw mixes for adobe blocks, mud mixes for mortars, and talked about site selection and roof structures. Over 40 community members came to the event, with many people looking for experience to build their confidence in making their own earthen structures. Our goal for the workshop was to use as few industrial building materials as possible. We created an upcycled brick mold, used old cinder blocks for the foundation, and used tamped gravel to fill the 2 foot deep foundation we created.
