With a lot of overlapping topics, overall Harris and Kennedy write about how the era they grew up in and the media of that time shaped their lives. From the mid-90’s to Today both include personal essays on gender and feminism, being (or trying to be) a “cool girl”. Something I have fallen victim to 🤦🏼♀️ Their different life experiences allowed for really interesting perspectives on similar topics from different angles, like what Spice Girl you “get to play” based on your appearance. Both women discuss topics of parenthood in extremely different views, as well as identity, mental health, fangirls/stan culture, self acceptance and fitting in. Wannabe: Reckonings with the Pop Culture That Shapes Me x Aisha Harris Harris’ Wannabe touches more on race and her personal history with tropes like tokenism and the Black best friend in TV and movies, how far representation in media has come while also looking at how Black art is criticized. She also comments on the importance of how media can shape societal norms and how diversity and sharing personal stories are so important in challenging harmful narratives. Harris discusses parenthood and chosen childlessness and the impact on relationships as a result. As a journalist she has a critical eye for all of the media she consumes. One in a Millennial: On Friendships, Feelings, Fangirls and Fitting in x Kate Kennedy I initially borrowed the ebook of One in a Millennial and was not vibing with the writing so I switched to the audio. The cadence was much easier to understand coming from her own voice. This book includes a lot of puns and jokes about millennial and early 2000’s culture, her essays are separated into 90’s, 2000’s and today. Kennedy touches on topics like religion and women’s health, social media and the uniquely huge shift of technology in our lives, the Girl Boss era and the fear of being “basic”. A little less critical than Wannabe and a little more nostalgia pandering but still has many thought provoking personal essays. ✨🎀 Are you also a nostalgia seeking millennial?

One in a Millennial by Kate Kennedy has been our audiobook for the last few weeks whenever we had a longer drive. This book was recommended by @whitneyalamode and I am so glad she suggested the audiobook format because it was wonderful. Kennedy somehow perfectly summarizes the experience of growing up a millennial girl. From American Girl dolls, Limited Too, to Spice Girls but also the going out out of college and hustling for more as an adult. I loved the chapters covering sleep overs and popular girl handwriting but also the pop culture references woven through the book. I think the fact that Kate Kennedy narrated the book herself made it so good. You could get the excited energy of remembering favorite kid things but then hear her voice crack when discussing not finding love or feeling different. ONE IN A MILLENNIAL by Kate Kennedy is part memoir/part essay collection reflecting on the authors life growing up as a millennial. Want to feel seen? Read this one! A millennial is referred to those born between 1981 & 1996. I feel like that’s a huge span of time. As an elder (I was born in 1983), I was in middle school listening to 311 wearing my dad’s flannel over my shiny shirt from Gadzooks, while many of you were just born. Lol, that’s funny to me. This book held such nostalgia though. The author and I had some very similar memories but at different times. One similarity was the love for American Girl dolls. Except for the one day I decided they were scary and I duct taped them into a box hoping so badly they couldn’t escape and get me in the night. I’ll also never forget: -cryptic AIM away messages -my first Nokia phone when I was in college -using Sun-In until my hair fell out -so many things I don’t have enough space to talk about them all. One thing I wanted in this book was a chapter about the rise of the emo kid but I don’t think the author was one so I’ll give it a pass. It’s a nonfiction book about growing up as a millennial, and the perks and challenges that came along with it. Kate was born two years before me, so I identified with a lot of it, and enjoyed a trip down memory lane to my childhood. The nostalgia of Barbie, Tamagotchi, American Girl, BSB vs *NSYNC, Dialup Issues, AIM, and MySpace. She also discusses current millennial issues such as mental health, anxiety, therapy, marriage, fertility struggles, IVF, and feeling like you should be farther along in life with some of these milestones. One in a Millennial by Kate Kennedy. This book undoubtedly brought back so many memories from when I grew up. I love being a millennial and how I got to experience so many changes in the world and a lot of technological developments and innovations. Every single chapter was special and I could relate in so many ways. Also the cover with the CD is very nostalgic, reminding me of all the music I used to download and burn into uncountable CDs. I certainly miss many things from back in the day, and many more that this book helped me remember. One of the first references on this book is the store Limited Too, and oh my did that brought back so many memories. That was my favorite store and my mom would take me shopping very often and that was the first store we always went to. Also, how to forget that we grew up when dial up internet was a thing. No one could use the phone when you were connected to the internet and everything was more challenging. I used to have a limit of one hour to navigate the web, and had to use my time wisely. Also those Nokia phones that all you could do with was obviously make calls and play snake. Which I used to play in secret all the time. And how we used to take a camera and our phone to parties and you would take one picture and hope it was a good one, nothing like present time, where we got used to taking tons. Growing up as a millennial was special because we were not totally consumed by technology and we used to have real fun, we lived in the moment, which people nowadays rarely do. I enjoyed this book, I just wished chapters were shorter, because sometimes it felt repetitive. *Thank you to @stmartinspress for my free copy. 📀🛼🛍️B O O K R E V I E W🛍️🛼📀 One in a Millennial By: @katekennedy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - All the stars! This book made me feel like I was “truly madly deeply” back in my daybed (sadly no trundle) flipping through the latest issue of Seventeen while trying to make a mix tape to use in my Walkman. It made me feel seen and validated my 1996 teenage self. While Kate wrote this book from her POV and makes a point to say that not everyone will have had the same experiences, I don’t think a chapter went by where I didn’t think “OMG, ME TOO!!” From her Saved by the Bell and Gilmore Girls references, to her recollection of sleepovers and playing Mall Madness, I saw so much of myself in her pages. One in a Millennial is a celebration of girlhood and of the things that influenced the women that so many of us are today (for better or worse). Kennedy describes pivotal 2000s milestones including but not “Limited Too”: using AOL Instant Messenger to communicate with crushes and friends, going out tops, hot girl handwriting and the oh so cringy AIM away messages we would post hoping to sound like we do not possibly have time to chat but “hit me up on my cell.” Kate’s poetic prose and creative writing really hooked me, and while she does focus a lot on light-hearted pop culture, there is so much depth to issues that some would argue to be surface-level. One In a Millennial is sharp, hilarious, and heartwarming all at once. For many years now I’ve wanted to include in my Arcadia project a historical pageant that takes place in the college grounds of St Andrews University and on the streets of the town, called the Kate Kennedy Procession. It’s 42 years since I last made photographs of it, when I was a student myself, in 1982. But this passage of time is but a blink of an eye compared to the longevity of the spring ritual on which Kate Kennedy is founded. Each April, the Kate Kennedy Club at St Andrews organises the annual Spring Procession, but who was Kate Kennedy? Some prefer to think of her as the personification of Cath Cinneachaidh, in Gaelic, the ‘return of spring’. Even by 1432 students were celebrating spring rites, which was condemned by the University authorities as “useless, unprofitable, dangerous and damnable”. The generally preferred tradition is that Kate was the adored niece of the founder of St Salvator’s College, Bishop James Kennedy (1408-1465). Legend has it that she was so beautiful that she was idolised by the students. Either way, in its various realisations, the procession is very old and was a spring burlesque of some kind. By the 19th Century the procession had begun to degenerate until, increasingly alarmed by its noisy revelries, the procession was banned on the 5th March 1881 by University authorities; but only until 1926, when, thanks to two students, Donald Kennedy and James Doak, Kate’s pageant reappeared in the familiar format that we see today, with only WWII and the Pandemic spoiling the fun. This was the 98th Procession, which every year celebrates the town’s rich history when some 150 students, locals and university staff dress up in costumes to re-enact prominent figures in the life of St Andrews, starting with Andrew himself, whose relics were brought here in AD732. My photographs are of Bishop Kennedy played by Adam and Kate played by Grace; the third picture is the one I took of Kate (played by a man) in 1982.

This is one of those books where I felt so very included. Sometimes, I think it’s easy to think our lives and experiences are unique, and for better or worse, many are not. We are all so similar. We’re all so connected by the time we were raised and the media we consume. It made me feel at ease with my lack of desire to be anything but a millennial. Whether that means I’m cheugy or cringy or whatever. This was easily a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 star) read for me. Book #48 of 2024! This book is “NOT a memoir!” Well, Maury, the results please? ✉️ The lie detector has determined that…is a LIE! This is totally a memoir, in what world is this not a memoir? And why did they keep trying to gaslight me into thinking it wasn’t supposed to be one? It is! That being said… “Is this play about us?” I have never felt so seen, heard, and more like I’ve never had a unique experience in my life. Weird Christian summer camps? ☑️ American Girl Dolls? ☑️ Second fridge money jealousy? ☑️ Being fed a constant diet of don’t be a slut, but don’t be a prude… no, we will not explain how to do that. ☑️ Popular girl handwriting?!?!? ☑️ Mental Health Stigmas preventing us from getting help earlier? ☑️ GENERAL BULLSHITTERY ☑️ I could go on and on… Got a lil rambly towards the last 1/4, but then Kate’s honest discussion of struggling with infertility, treatments, IVF, loss, the feeling of chasing an ever moving clock, and the fear and rage of living in a country that does not care about protecting the healthcare of women and birthing people had present day me feeling so seen and heard again. I found myself getting very emotional and was like “What the hell? Can we talk about the Spice Girls again please? I’m on my way to the gym!” I guess what I’m trying to say is with a few minor tweaks to some details this could have been a very similar story to mine. And I am so grateful that this book exists it took me through the highs and lows of millennial existence with a lot of hilarious puns along the way. 💿 One in a Millennial 💿 If you grew up with AIM away messages, American Girl dolls, sleepovers, and butterfly hair clips, read (or listen to!) this book. I went in expecting a walk down memory lane, and I got that but also so much more. It’s billed as “not a memoir” but I would very much call this a memoir, or at least memoir adjacent. I listened on audibook, and I would definitely recommend that format. @katekennedy has a great writing style, but I really loved listening to her talk about her childhood, her struggles in adulthood, and everything in between. I definitely laughed out loud a few times, and maybe teared up once or twice. Monday Confession: There’s no chance I’m going to finish this book in time for book club tomorrow night. I’m 26% of the way through it and I’m unfortunately not a speed reader. My schedule got away from me and I’m just behind. Will I finish it? Yes. But will I finish it by tomorrow? No. Do I feel guilty about it? Yeah, I kind of do. This was one of my biggest hesitations about joining a book club; not being able to read the books in the allotted amount of time. And leads to feelings of “why am I such a slow reader?”, “How do other people manage to read so many books in a month or year?”, “Is it my fault because I should have prioritized the book club book over one I’m reading for fun?”, “I don’t want reading to feel like work”. Luckily, the friends I’ve made at book club don’t judge and any guilt is my own doing. We’re certainly our own worst critics and I’ve been working on giving myself more grace this year. As a millennial with a hand-me-down daybed courtesy of my great grandmother that I had until I was 13, reading this line had me shouting, “Yes!” into my living room. Kate Kennedy’s, ‘One in a Millennial’ is a must read for anyone who grew up in the 90s and came of age in the early 2000s. This trip down Nostalgia Lane reminded me of the good things while also commenting on the tough parts of growing up as a girl in this generation and the societal pressures we felt to “fit in” or look like the celebs with their flat tummies and super low-rise jeans. I don’t know about all of you, but that aspect really took a toll on my self-esteem growing up because I didn’t fit that mold. It took me a long time to shed that mindset. Looking back, so much of it was incredibly superficial and we were bombarded with the messaging. They made it hard to love ourselves. This was a read that I connected to and felt seen in. I mean, we were all really out there on Al Gore’s Wild West internet with AIM screen names trying to navigate middle and high school social structures. I mean, I’m not sure I did myself a favor making mine SlugBugTwinkler as a middle schooler and then changing it to dorkyduck44 for high school, but hey. I loved the new VW Beetles and I never shied away from being my academically inclined self. If someone was going to call me a dork, I might as well own it. 🤷🏻♀️ If you’re of my generation and are looking for a relatable non-fiction read, this is it. It felt like it was written by a friend who deeply understands all the nuances of growing up in this time. 💿I LOVED this book! Listening to it felt like reminiscing and catching up with a friend. Swipe to see my own ~*girlhood memz*~ and a collage I made circa 2003. All evidence of going “out out” in Jeans and a Cute Top™️ and business causal will remain in the vault, but please enjoy the final slide, an absolutely blurry pic that was 100% uploaded to a Facebook album of the night. 🛍️I had a doll that looked like me (Meet Melissa✌🏻) but I identified as a Molly (and maybe had a crush on Josefina 🧐). I still remember reading the historical books and The Care and Keeping of You with my mom. TBH I’m still reeling from the death of Kirsten’s bestie from cholera. This was a fun trip down memory lane/ critical look at the iconic brand, but while I loved my doll and the books, this is maybe more of a deep dive than I needed.
TV REVIEW: 8/10 “HALO UPS THE ACTION IN ITS SECOND SEASON TO REACH A NEW LEVEL” While I’m not a diehard Halo fan, I certainly loved playing the first 2 games on X-Box when I was growing up. The weaponry and environments were always some of the best to play in multiplayer, but sadly, I never got into the actual storyline of the game itself. So since I wasn’t too into the lore, I went into Season 1 with an open mind and not knowing what to really expect from the story. While the first season lagged a bit, and apparently deviated from the main storyline according to the fans, this new season took what was great about the first season, the combat and the weaponry, and stepped it up to a whole new level here. This season is much darker and way more grittier than the first, as the consequences of their actions from before come full circle now. Plus the special effects for the Covenant and the weapon and suit designs from the game are all still very top notch for a TV show. I love fiction for the escapism it provides, but every now and then I’ll throw a memoir or non-fiction in there. I’ve been following Kate Kennedy on Instagram for a while, and I find her wildly relatable. Yet, I’ve never listened to her podcast. Weird! But I’m not a podcast person... there are too many great audiobooks to listen to instead. Anyhow, I loved One in a Millennial. Kennedy’s commentary was entertaining, well thought out, and there were parts of it that really spoke to me. While there are several ways in which she and I differ (and she acknowledges that her book is very much from one perspective and doesn’t cover everyone’s experience), she captured a lot of my generation’s hobbies and interests. She writes in a poetic, sing-songy way (including several poems actually), and the number of puns and plays on words were astounding to me, haha. I loved the chapters that took me back in time, from the era of gel pens and school supplies to trying to “play it cool” with your crush on AIM. There were also important (to me) parts about seeking confidence in oneself and the difficulty in deciding whether or not to have kids. I was impressed with the level of soul-searching she reveals about her career and her insecurites in general. I somehow expected this memoir ot be all happy-go-lucky nostalgia, and it was very much NOT just that. But I liked the mix of whimsy and real talk. As you can imagine, the audiobook is great because this talented woman’s career is podcasting/speaking into a microphone. I've been struggling with the idea of calling myself an author. 📝 I don't have a book published, nor am I anywhere near ready to query or self-publish. 📝I have one full draft of the story that I've shelved. 📝 A few thousand words of a new adult romance that isn't quite working. 📝 A false start of a story that I'm making huge changes to right now. It's hard for me to feel like an author when I don't have what society would deem success. But then I heard this today: "I have permission to be here because I gave it to myself." @katekennedy, episode 50 of @bethereinfive . And I realized: I can call myself an author if I give myself the permission to do so. And I know myself... I could only give myself such permission if I knew I was working toward it. It couldn't be something I said I wanted to do, but never took the steps to make it happen. But I am working toward it. 💻 That full draft that will never be published is not wasted time because it showed me that I can stick to a story and finish it. 💻 The new adult story isn't working right now, but that's because I've chosen to put it on the back burner while I focus on a different story. 💻 What I called a false start has been essential in this rewrite; I'm so close to heading the word count that I was at when I started over. AND I still have three chapters of source material to go through and rewrite before I'm ready to write new content. The publishing dream is now a goal. That goal has actionable steps. Actionable steps that I'm taking. So, here I am. Giving myself permission to be in this author space. ¡QUE ESPECTACULAR TEMPORADA! Hablemos de la Segunda Temporada de "Halo" (2024) creada y escrita por Steven Kane y Kyle Kille, con 8 episodios de 57 min a 1 hr 3 min c/u. Tras una primera temporada fuertemente criticada tanto por fans como críticos, la serie regresa de la mejor manera, teniendo una carga excesiva de acción, drama, traición. Parece ser que tuvieron en cuenta los comentarios y mejoraron muchos aspectos, como el ritmo y la participación de personajes inicialmente molestos. Y es que ya tuvimos bastante tiempo para aceptar que está es una adaptación MUY LIBRE de los juegos, así que sólo hay que disfrutarla. La temporada llegó fuerte con la caída de Reach, que quizás se basaron en la novela del mismo nombre, se sienten más riesgos en la serie con el Jefe sin armadura, múltiples bajas y bastantes consecuencias, el trabajo técnico muy bien realizado, el CGI está mucho mejor aunque el VFX decae. Los trabajos más destacados está temporada definitivamente son Pablo Schreiber y Cristina Rodlo, ya que vemos en sus personajes que significa ser un Spartan, en dónde juega el factor humano, que simboliza y que papel juega el Jefe para los Marines o el resto de la UNSC La temporada cierra de manera espectacular con varias apariciones sorpresa (parece que ahora sí adaptarán los juegos) aunque siento que faltó trabajo con los personajes de Yerin Ha y Charlie Murphy Aún así con todo eso dicho, está Segunda Temporada es muchísimo mejor en narrativa y acción, ojalá la renueven. В эту игру я никогда не играл, имею только поверхностные и общие познания. И как очень легко предположить, самые недовольные и негативные отзывы по фильму идут как раз таки от игроков, ну или же от фанатов, которые очень давно ждали экранизации. Да, разделяю их негодование, но прочитав несколько отзывов, нашел от одного фаната примерно такой - "ребята, если бы они снимали всё как по игре, то кроме перестрелок и лишь пары слов и фраз от Чифа в сериале не было бы ничего". ⠀ ⠀ 🚬 Посмотрел первый сезон, поначалу было реально очень скучно, боёв и перестрелок было очень мало, но сейчас оглядываясь назад понимаешь, что сценаристы и команда очень хорошо на самом деле постарались - в течение всего сезона нам не спеша раскрывают историю нескольких героев, нарастают их мотивы, нас знакомят не сильно агрессивно с миром Halo. Здесь переплетаются и боевик и драма.⠀ ⠀ 🕺Второй сезон я еще не начинал, думаю дождусь когда он выйдет полностью, через месяц примерно вроде бы. ⠀ ⠀ ✅️ Сериал можно порекомендовать любителям SCI-FI фильмов и сериалов.
