🍾 10 years of our book club! The lovely @balynphi took some time creating a much appreciated gift for us all to celebrate 10 years of our book club existing and still going strong - cupcakes, a tote bag and homemade bookmarks. We're a YA, girl's only book club - the 'Not So Young' Adult book club, based in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. It's been 9.5 years since I joined the club, so my 10th anniversary with them isn't until later in the year, but my attendance in the club has to be over 97% - I almost never miss a meeting, and rarely miss reading the book. We're quite a family - we all get along great, with no politics or disputes, become great friends outside of the club - we've had many fun times - parties, social friendships, been to each others engagements, weddings, watched kids be born and grown in that time. We've read over 100 YA books in that time, and have enjoyed every minute of it. Review ✨ Our first @lazylitloves book club pick! 😍 This was a cute, quick read and overall I enjoyed it. The premise was super fun and I liked the celebrity romance aspect! Also gotta love a book set in NYC 🏙️ I did get somewhat annoyed with Lexi at times throughout the book- her stubbornness and immaturity showed at times. But then again she’s 24 sooo 🤷🏻♀️ Definitely a fun one to read and it was even better getting to discuss it with my friends at our retreat! 📚 Book Review 📚 Title : Filthy Rich Vampires Author : @genevaleebooks Genre : Paranormal Romance Rate : 🌟🌟🌟🌟 This was @bookscape.books March pick. I also buddy read this with some of my fellow bookclub members to ensure we had it read before our monthly zoom call to discuss it. Great choice as always ladies. I used to read more fantasy/vampire books when I was younger but I think I’ve started to o get back into them recently and this one definitely helped. We meet Julian as he is woken up from a few decades of being asleep. He is wondering what could be so urgent and then he realises he’s got a problem. He is one of the world’s wealthiest vampires and he is single, just as the infamous social season is about to start. As he is the eldest Rousseaux, he is expected to find a wife by the end of the season. Then we meet Thea, she is a cellist who is playing at the first gala of the season and Julian can’t take his eyes off her. He knows she is the last person he should be with, never mind fall in love with. He is too pure and innocent, and most importantly she’s too human. However when she stumbles and discovers his world, she now needs his protection. And then he comes up with an offer she struggles to refuse. He needs a fake girlfriend for a year and she needs money to help pay for her mother’s crippling medical bills. Julian’s family isn’t best please with his choice of girlfriend. And the vampire world is a lot darker and sinister than Thea could ever have imagined. It was a bit of a slow burner but I think it needed it to get the proper background. Short chapters and multiple POV are always a bit thumps up for me in a book. I really liked Thea, she stands up for herself when she needs and isn’t afraid to say what needs to be said. Also the spice and tension between these two is 🔥🌶️ This is the first in a series and after that ending I really need to pick up book 2 really soon. Other bookclub members have read and finished the rest of the series and all really enjoyed it, so that can only be a good sign. Whether this is your genre or you want to try something new, I think this is a great one to get your started.

📖 Book Review 📖 Title : Bride Author : @alihazelwood Genre : Fantasy / Romance Rate : 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I’ve loved Ali’s books in the past and this one did not disappoint. I buddy read this with some of my fellow @bookscape.books friends and it was so much fun reading along with you all ☺️ This book was so much fun and had me hooked from the beginning. I don’t think I’ve read a werewolf and vampire type book since Twilight and that’s going back a long time 😅 We start of with a political marriage of convenience, between vampire bride and an alpha werewolf. The tension is palpable between the two natural enemies, what could go wrong 😅 Everyone believes Misery is marrying Lowe to keep her father happy and keep the peace between the vampire & werewolf communities. However she has her own agenda, her friend has gone missing and she needs to find out what’s happened to her. She believes being in the werewolf territory is going to help her. Lowe has his own reasons for marrying Misery, protecting his younger sister being the main reason. He has a small circle who he trusts with a secret, can he trust Misery with the most important thing in his life? I really enjoyed how the characters developed and how the story evolved. We all felt like we needed to be a bit more like Misery at times throughout this book. Monday Confession: There’s no chance I’m going to finish this book in time for book club tomorrow night. I’m 26% of the way through it and I’m unfortunately not a speed reader. My schedule got away from me and I’m just behind. Will I finish it? Yes. But will I finish it by tomorrow? No. Do I feel guilty about it? Yeah, I kind of do. This was one of my biggest hesitations about joining a book club; not being able to read the books in the allotted amount of time. And leads to feelings of “why am I such a slow reader?”, “How do other people manage to read so many books in a month or year?”, “Is it my fault because I should have prioritized the book club book over one I’m reading for fun?”, “I don’t want reading to feel like work”. Luckily, the friends I’ve made at book club don’t judge and any guilt is my own doing. We’re certainly our own worst critics and I’ve been working on giving myself more grace this year. Earlier this month, our Barrington Heights Book Club met to discuss the book, Crying In H Mart, by Michelle Zauner. It spent 60 weeks on the NYT’s, non-fiction Best Seller list, and is probably a book I wouldn’t have found myself. However, it was a very compelling book about a woman’s complicated relationship with her mother, and how they ultimately bonded over her mother’s heritage and Korean food. Lots to say here, but I don’t want to give too much away. After her mother’s untimely death, Michelle found cooking her mother’s recipes helped her heal, and find her own identity. Crying in H Mart was well received, and there was lots to talk about at our meeting. In addition to being a great writer, Michelle is also a musician, and a lead singer in a group called Japanese breakfast. Crying in H Mart is being adapted to a movie. Deborah hosted, and treated us to some lovely winter soups- a ham and bean, and a butternut squash, which she paired with platters of French bread, cheese and fruit. Our March Member of the Month is - Kylie! Here is a little about her... Hi, everyone! My name is Kylie, and I’m excited to have chosen our book for March: A Man Called Ove. When I joined this incredible group last summer, the book of the month was Anxious People, by the same author. It was such a fun and lighthearted read that I decided to read A Man Called Ove again, and hopefully share with some who haven’t read it yet! I’m a Mama to two fun and fiesty little ladies, and wife to Michael (aka the shy and salty Italian man who some of you saw for seconds at the January meeting! 😉). In all seriousness, meeting Michael completely changed my life for the better. I was a fiercely independent lady with no plans on having a family, and within three months of meeting Michael, I learned we had an Ella girl on the way! Fast forward to Ella being 8 months old, and we learn of another little lady (Clara) who would be born 16 months after her sister. Our girls are non-stop, full of life, and continuously make us smile and laugh in between trying to hold our land of chaos together. I wouldn’t have it any other way. ❤️ Other interests and passions include playing classical piano, spending time in Lewiston in our cozy family cabin, taking classes at Orange Theory, checking out local spots, concerts at small venues, and cuddling up with the amazing books this group has shared. I want to thank all of you for making this community so special, and for being so kind and accepting of me. Flashback to a year ago, when my first altered book project was a set of 7 books for my book club members, to celebrate our 15 year anniversary! You know that saying about biting off more than you can chew? I knew I was in trouble when it took me more than a week to get the covers done. Black gesso, 2 coats of black acrylic paint, some abstract accent paint to add color, trial and error on the printed paper title block, and finishing off with an acrylic sealer. At the @bennythundershtx December book club event, I was showing Rebekah the professional pictures I’d had done with the pups. She asked if I would text her one of the pictures, and made an off-hand comment about how she paints as a hobby…. When I arrived to last night’s book club, Rebekah greeted me with the most AMAZING surprise! She said that the couch in Central Perk was the first thing she thought of when seeing this picture, and she absolutely outdid herself in creating that vision on canvas with watercolor, acrylic, and Sharpie. Hi Booksta family, I hope you're enjoying your weekend. I've not managed to read much this week due to personal circumstances - ugh! I hope to catch up somewhat this weekend, though, as it's going to be wet; again. I recently finished my first Beth O'Leary. And what a delightful read it was. The Switch by Beth O'Leary A dual timeline running between Leena and her elderly grandmother, Eileen, who decide to swap their lives for a while. Leena is struggling to cope with losing her sister, whilst Eileen is trying to find some excitement again now finding herself single. I particularly loved Eileen's fiesty character and how she was up for exploring the life she missed out on in her earlier years. She teaches us that it's never too late to start over. It was a very clever plot that was funny, poignant, and life-affirming.
