Moving into a week of big emotions with my dad Raymond’s 70th birthday on Wednesday, Ray-Luca’s 13th and what would have been Rayf-Thomas’ that follows. I’ve become more aware over time that I catch myself in moments doing for my children just as my parents did for us. We believe that, coaching our kids into resilience and into being fully grown humans, can best achieved through sport. @rafickhoosain and I have had the absolute privilege of competing across sporting codes, so we’ve made this a big part of our parenting. We’re finding the sporting codes that fire their passions hockey, rugby, soccer, swimming, karate, kickboxing and debating. The sixth day after chemo. Time to start Dave’s round of Grastofil injections, to trigger his bone marrow to replace the white blood cells, that are collateral damage to the cancer-killing drugs. I gave Dave the injection between rounds of hauling yard waste. Dave tires more easily than previous spring cleanups. Of course. So much has happened and is happening in his body, compared to previous years. He’s not feeling as depleted as he had after his second round of chemo. So far, this round has been as (relatively) gentle as his third round was. Hoping the next two rounds are his final rounds, and as kind. Me? I’m feeling anticipatory grief. Not to be negative. We’re full of determination. But I’ll be honest. Doing things together. Watching how Dave moves… Everything we’ve done together, everything we do is done together. Dave does what I cannot.
