Last weekend I was in Sandness helping my in-laws planting some trees for a large project up at their croft (700 trees planted in 4 days!). Starting our week off on a high! Bonfire, music, happy puppies, a curious stag, balmy, hazy sunshine and THE most delicious, moist, flavoursome homemade tandoori chicken thighs cooked on the fire. I also made flatbreads that we cooked on the fire too, and a yoghurt, mint and cucumber sauce to drizzle over the chicken. Taste sensation! I was pretty chuffed with myself! Rio had a fire cooked lamb neck fillet, which he absolutely couldn't wait to demolish - he spent the entire time it was cooking sitting sniffing the air, and then kept guard whilst drooling waiting for it to cool down... After finishing my army of trays last week it's been head first into crofty things. The hens were moved, nettles were gathered and dried for tea, plantain, pineapple weed and rose petals are waiting for their turn into the dehydrator. A lots of weeding and transplanting (praying for seedlings to grow faster than the slugs can eat them) and I even managed a chickweed oil to turn into a salve later (following Henriette Kress' Practical Herbs books). I've always known I feel at home on the West Coast. Whether its cornwall or scotland as long as its a place belonging to the sea and skye, to the oyster catchers and crashing waves and with miles of beach to pick through. But u never thought I'd feel.at home on a remote croft, miles from anything much at all. The weather helped ofcourse but I've never experienced the simple life so good. The wee winding road home. After more than 3 weeks away, visiting family in France and England, we have arrived back in South Erradale. Happily, the weather has been a little drier the last week or so and it's been such a boost. But it's been months of wet ground and it's been tough, especially on the goats. The sheep have been better adapted to this terrain and climate. . I don't know what other folk use for foot baths but we've found the @provitaanimal Endurance footbath solution a sanity saver this year. An afternoon of hard work but reward! Got my pea frames built, the blossom is out on my dwarf fruit trees, I've sorted my tubs out and worked out what needs to be done to fix those that aren't thriving, and I got 3 out of 4 "tattie towers" started in some old tyres that were lying about the place. Rio and his tiny cousin, Dakota the Jack Russell, did excellent work as quality checkers on my seed tatties (some of which are my own from last year!). The Highlander did great work on the dry stone wall we're building to extend out the garden area, and 2 other members of Team Strutt (not pictured as they were too far away!) did a great job of working on the bottom perimeter fence and started clearing out the old stable in the back field. I'm aching, tired and slightly sunburnt (it was blooming strong at times today!) AND.. I stink, badly, because I accidentally tipped a load of old tattie tyre water on myself, but I've lit the fire for a bath, and I have some Nick Drake on the speakers and a wee rum in hand so I'm very, very happy with what an excellent day this has been. Team work in action, looking forward and planning and positivity abound! Look at these little pots of hyssop that I’ve bought from @urbanherbsuk. All the way to the Isle of Skye and in perfect, vibrant condition. I’m potting these up today so that the pollinators will have lots to visit very soon. These are a hardy perennial so should be perfect for the Croft. I’ve got blue, pink and white varieties.
