Continuing our countdown until our big event tomorrow, here is another fun camel related fact! Did you know that the ship transporting the camels from the Middle-East and North Africa to Texas had to be modified to accommodate the massive two-hump (Bactrian) camels? The USS Supply, the ship transporting the 33 camels to Indianola, TX, was unable to initially and comfortably fit a 2000lb, 7ft-4in tall Bactrian camel, resulting in a large hole being cut into the deck so that the humps of the camel may fit and protrude through. In the image below, the loading of a massive Bactrian camel onto the USS Supply is depicted. Visit Fort Lancaster this Saturday, May 4th, for a special event featuring live camels, flint-knapping, and more! https://thc.texas.gov/historic-sites/fort-lancaster #texas #camels #texashistory #ushistory #history #fortlancaster #TexasHistoricalCommission #camelcorps #education #heritage #tourism

Mark your calendars as we kickstart the countdown to our live camel event this Saturday, May 4th! Stay tuned for fun facts and interesting tidbits about camels and the US Army Camel Experiment leading up to the day of the event! Did you know that US President Franklin Pierce received a pair of camel hair socks as a gift? It's true! The US government had recently imported a batch of 33 camels (+1 newborn calf) into Texas as part of an endeavor to introduce camels for military use in the desert regions of the American West. This ambitious initiative, known as the United States Army Camel Corps, aimed to assess the viability of camels as pack animals in challenging terrain. The camels arrived at the port city of Indianola, TX after a long journey from the Middle East and North Africa. Before the camels would arrive at their new home of Camp Verde near San Antonio, they were sheared in Victoria, TX, where resident Mary A. Shirkey fashioned a pair of camel hair socks for the president. Major Henry Wayne, tasked with overseeing the transportation and handling of the camels, mailed the pair of socks to then Secretary of War Jefferson Davis with a letter detailing the intended recipient and the origin of the peculiar footwear. The camel hair socks were intended to ensure the president's interest in the fledgling experiment. Join us this Saturday, May 4th, from 9AM-3PM at Fort Lancaster State Historic Site for our special event featuring live camels, flint knapping, and more! In 1855, Congress approved $30,000 to form an experimental US Camel Corps. They thought camels might be great pack animals in the Southwestern US. Officials sailed to ports like Egypt and Turkey, where they acquired camels, pack saddles, and hired drivers. They then sailed for Texas, where Camp Verde was designated the official camel station. In 1864, the government ended the experiment and started auctioning off the camels. For many years, camels were seen wandering the deserts in the Southwest. . . . . . . . . . . #camel #camelcorps #uscamelcorps #usarmy #army #unitedstatesarmy #militaryhistory #militaryrecords #texas #campverde

Did you know... In the 16th century, Mughal Emperor Akbar and the Maharajas of Rajasthan, India, established a camel corps for their military. These majestic creatures, known as ships of the desert, were harnessed to conquer the battlefield. Riding atop these towering beasts, the Mughal Emperor commanded his army into battle. With their grandeur and strength, the camel corps struck fear into the hearts of their enemies. These regal creatures were not only used for transportation but also played a vital role in the logistics of warfare. They carried provisions, weapons, and supplies across the arid desert, ensuring the success of the Mughal Empire. Not this guy, though. He's just chillin'. ❤ Our first episode of our India series drops this Thursday at 6:00 pm Central! Head over to YouTube and SUBSCRIBE 👍 Go. Live. Travel. #golivetravel The Day We Make ☀️

What? A Texas Camel Experiment in the 1850s? 🐪🌵 🤔 Did you know that in the mid-19th century, Texas had something quite unusual? Camels! In 1856, as part of an experiment by the United States Army, 34 camels arrived at the port in Indianola, Texas. 🚢 🌍 These camels, hailing from Malta, Greece, Turkey, and Egypt, were part of a unique project called The United States Camel Corps! The idea was to use these camels as pack animals in the southwestern parts of the United States, which were largely undeveloped and resembled desert terrain. 🏜️ 🏕️ The camels were settled at Camp Verde (in Kerr County), Texas, where military officials hoped to start a breeding program. However, the experiment faced challenges. The camels did not get along with the Army’s horses and mules, and the soldiers found them difficult to handle. Despite these setbacks, this fascinating piece of history highlights Texas' innovative spirit in the face of logistical challenges. 🤠 #DidYouKnow #TexasHistory #CamelCorps #WeekendTrivia

Did you know in 1856 the US Army decided to implement Camels into the Army for the hot westward deserts of the United States. Yep, U.S. Army LT George H. Crosman hit upon an unusual idea to deal with the situation way before in 1836. Westward expansion was growing and so was the problem of going the long distances in the hot weather. Well what other animal can do all that with little water? None other then the Arabian Camel. The camels would be able to carry up to 600 lbs of equipment. Over 1000 were purchased by 1857 Congress spending over $300,000 in today’s money. The Camel Corps were stationed in Camp Verde, Texas. But the camels were disobedient and did little to actually help the army. General Robert E Lee oversaw the use of the camels and implemented a few into Texas brigades during the American Civil War. Where then they were exclusively retired and sold off to various departments and or circuses or just merely escaped. The more you know! 🇺🇸🐪🐫 #camel #usarmy #army #camelcorps #americancivilwar #civilwar #animal #military #militaryhistory #history #historicalfacts #facts #historical #usmilitary #armyhistory

Did you know that the US Army once had a Camel Corps? It's true! They hired a man named Hi Jolly to help create and manage the corps. They acquired 33 camels and brought them to Arizona via Texas. Hi Jolly oversaw the care of the camels and tested their effectiveness in army maneuvers. Unfortunately, the Civil War led to the disbandment of the camel corps, and the animals were auctioned off. Hi Jolly stayed in Arizona and started a freight service using some of the camels. However, the business wasn't very successful, so he released the camels into the Arizona desert. It's said that they survived there for a while, but none remain today. Hi Jolly became a US citizen in 1880 and passed away in Quartzsite, where the local cemetery was named after him. Isn't it fascinating how history can surprise us with these unique stories? #HiJolly #CamelCorps #ArizonaHistory #davidthomasrealtoraz

Return of the Camel Corps! Indianola is where 80 Arabian camels imported by the military first arrived in the United States. The year was 1856, and back then this was the largest port in Texas. The Army purchased the camels with the intent of training them as a mode of transportation through the Southwest, but the Civil War interrupted the experiment. The port only lasted a few decades longer -- it was abandoned after a hurricane and fire in 1886.⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣ #usroadtrip #roadtripping #roadtrippin #visittexas #southtexas #gulfcoast #indianolatexas #indianolatx #optoutside #thegreatoutdoors #landscapelove #landscape #landscapephotography #nature #naturegram #naturephotography #oceanphotography #beachphotography #militaryhistory #camelsofinstagram #camelcorps #sculpturelovers #sculpttheworld #wanderingheart #exploretheworld #travel #travelgram #travelphotography #ontheroad #ontheroadagain⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣

Picking up the US Camel Corps trail at Camp Verde General Store! The historic store and post office once serviced Camp Verde military fort, headquarters of the Camel Corps, a strange and silly chapter in US military history...⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ The Camel Corps was a half-baked idea of Jefferson Davis, who imported 70 Arabian camels in the late 1850s to transport the military across the American desert. Of course Davis jumped ship to the confederacy shortly after, and the American government abandoned his pet project. The camels were auctioned off in Arizona, where they lived 'til the 1890s. The U.S. Army Camel Corps was one of the most unique experiments in this nation’s military history. U.S. Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis, encouraged Congress to purchase camels to be brought to Texas to test their transport capabilities against horses, oxen, and mules. Camels’ natural affinity for desert travel made them stand out due to their ability to travel longer with less food and water than other pack animals and carry larger and heavier loads of cargo. With our upcoming U.S. Army Camel Experiment event, where we will have live camels at the museum, we would like to see how much you know about camels and the U.S. Army Camel Corps! See if you can answer these five questions, and feel free to put your answers in the comments. 1. The average pack mule could carry around 230 pounds of cargo. How much weight could the average camel carry? 2. Some camels have one hump, while others have two. Why is this? 3. What is in a camel’s hump? 4. How long can a camel go without drinking water? 5. What led to the end of the U.S. Army Camel Experiment? Put your answers in the comments, and if you want to know the correct answers, come to our U.S. Army Camel Experiment Event on April 28th and 29th at the Museum of the American G.I. in College Station, Texas! When camels arrived in Camp Verde, Texas, on August 26th, 1856, there was still much skepticism surrounding their capabilities. Congress had been reluctant to approve funding for this experimental "US Camel Corps," and many of the men assigned to work with the camels were questioning the camels' ability to adapt to military service. On June 25th, 1857, Edward Fitzgerald Beale departed on a surveying expedition, exploring the possibilities of building a permanent roadway linking the eastern and western United States territories. Although camels had already proven useful and capable in a couple of other experiments in the United States southwest prior to this expedition, Beale was still reluctant to bring the 25 camels he was assigned along on the journey. The camels started slow on the first week of the expedition, regularly arriving at camps hours after everyone else. However, by the second week, the camels began to hit their stride, impressing Beale and the entire party. Beale reported that the camels could pack 700 pounds and outpace the rest of the pack animals, all while eating nothing but scrub and prickly plants, drinking less water than the other animals, and maintaining a calm temperament. Beale wrote, "Sometimes we forget they are with us. Certainly there never was anything so patient or enduring and so little troublesome as this noble animal…At this time there is not a man in camp who is not delighted with them." Beale and other Army leadership were highly pleased with the camel's performance upon the expedition's conclusion. Still, complicated politics and growing tensions from the nearing Civil War led to the abandonment of the Camel Corps, despite its initial success. If you would like to hear more about these fascinating creatures and their role in the United States Army, come to the U.S. Army Camel Experiment on April 28th and 29th at the Museum of the American G.I. in College Station, Texas! I’m super endeared to/ haunted by the US Camel Corps experiment of the 1850s, which brought camels from Turkey and Syria to the Southwest USA as military beasts of burden to push westwards. An amazing journey these camels had to make, arriving to be both awe-inspiring and often misunderstood. At the start of the civil war this experiment fell apart, some camels moving on to become independent mail carriers, circus spectacles, and just let go to roam. This brought us to a super DIY cemetery in Arizona. Quartzsite is a key spot along the Camel Corps route from Indianola, TX to California. It’s also the final resting place of Philip Tedro (Hadji Ali/ “Hi Jolly) and features a pyramid of local stones which also encapsulates the ashes of a 1930s camel. As the myth goes, he was found in the desert arms wrapped around a camel, the pair both dead. Surrounding it were many old and new local graves, with decorations like paving stones, hand poured concrete, and garden turtles. We also quickly learned from the MANY RVs and trailers that it’s the “boondocking capital of the US” as well as the site of the MAIN EVENT, a gemstone conference happening every spring. To see some of the other #camelcorps sites I’ve visited, including the bones of Seid the camel, check out the hashtag #alissavisitscamels #quartzsite #AR

The Light Camel Corps "Up The Nile", Egypt 1884-5. An Egyptian War Medal, with clasp for "The Nile 1884-5" awarded to Private John Foord, 15th Hussars, who was one of only 42 Men and 2 Officers to earn the medal from his Regiment as part of the famous Camel Corps in Egypt and Sudan. Credit to the late Harry Payne (1858-1927) for this excellent coloured illustration of the men of the Light Camel Corps riding their Camels through the desert during the campaign. According to Count Gleichen, an Officer of the Camel Corps, each man was hand picked to be the finest representative of their unit: "The men had all to be marksmen, or first-class shots, twenty-two years old at least, of course medically fit, and of as good character as possible. In fact, they were as good men as could be got anywhere, and a finer shipload than those on board the Deccan never left England." Private John Foord, of the 15th Hussars, first enlisted into the Army on 28th June 1882. He was one of 2 Officers and 42 men selected to join the Camel Corps from his unit, out of a total 32 Officers and 486 Men who made up the Light Camel Corps out of a number of "Light Cavalry" Hussars Regiments. I am not sure however that Mr Foord enjoyed his time in the desert, riding an unfamiliar camel under the searing heat of the sun, contrasting to the extremely cold nights of the desert. The men all rode "Up the Nile" and returned home on 23rd July 1885 as heroes. They were all welcomed back by the Prince of Wales and Duke of Cambridge who gave a welcoming speech to them as they arrived off the Transport "Queen" Now, on 13th October 1885, once he had settled back in, he purchased his own discharge from the army, only 3 years into his service. This discharge cost him a hefty £18, which given the pay of 2 shillings a day of a typical Hussar, that was 6 months wages gone. Evidently, as the medal still looks like it was only just issued, he also never wore the medal throughout his life, leaving this time of his life behind deep in the Western Desert of Egypt and Sudan. #medal #medals #numismatics #collecting #egypt #rivernile #camelcorps #hussars #cavalry #militaryhistory #history #warhistory

Camels!!! In the 1850s, the U.S. Army created the Camel Corps to test whether camels would work better than horses, mules, and oxen in the American Southwest. In their travels during the experiment, the Camel Corps stopped in at what would later become El Morro National Monument and left their mark on the sandstone bluff. The experiment was a success, but the Civil War interrupted the implementation of camels for Army units in the Southwest. Following the war, The Army divested itself from the idea because one of the more notable original proponents was Jefferson Davis, who became President of the Confederacy during the war. A few years back, El Morro National Monument began commemorating the Camel Corps with a special event featuring live camels! Camels were definitely not what I was expecting when I became a park ranger so many years ago! This year's event was the most highly attended yet, with almost nine hundred visitors over the course of the weekend, not bad for a tiny National Monument that no one has ever heard of! 🙂 : : : : #elmorronationalmonument #newmexico #newmexicotrue #usarmycamelcorps #usarmycamelexperiment #camelcorps #camels #camelsstink

Hey Barcrawlers! Sorry for the delay on this going up. But this was a special episode. Not only because our sound was weird because SOMEONE kept messing with the microphone (not naming names, but it begins with a "J" and ends with "ordan"), but we also had some guests! Jordan and Kellie helped Kate with an episode while she was out of town. Anais was so excited to be left alone for a few days!Anyway! This episode is about the US Camel Corps. Before the Civil War, the army was trying to find ways to travel across the West and decided to bring in some camels. How did they do? Also, did it involve certain people who eventually became president of the confederacy? Did we then design the perfect statue to commemorate these people? You will have to listen! And then go check out our instagram to see the beautiful statue that we may or may not have designed and then a friend brought to life. See the link in the bio! Pictures include Kate, Jordan, and Kellie at #DragonCon2020 our murder bathroom wallpaper and several versions of the beautiful statue, including one where there was confusion over who should be vomiting! #BygoneBarcrawl #DrunkHistory #DrunkUSHistory #DrunkHistoryPodcast #USMilitary #USCamelCorps #CamelCorps #DollyParton #DollyIsOurQueen

Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike! What day is it Mike?! It’s Hump day! 🐪 Riding a camel isn’t as difficult as they say—once you get over the first hump, the rest is pretty easy. Well, we know some folks who might disagree. In 1857, Lt. Edward F. Beale was instructed by the federal government to build a wagon road from Fort Defiance, AZ to the Colorado River. While on the journey, he would test the use of camels as pack animals in the desert Southwest. The Americans soon found that riding and packing camels was nothing like utilizing horses and mules. Camel handlers accompanying the expedition taught the Americans the ropes and helped them see the value of the camels. The expedition found that the camels “were capable of packing one thousand pounds apiece and of traveling with their load from thirty to forty miles per day all the while finding their own feed over an almost barren country.” As they made their way to Fort Defiance, the unique expedition made a stop at what would become El Morro National Monument, leaving their mark on the rocky face. Ultimately, the camel experiment (watch out! They spit!) fizzled out, but this unique chapter of history lives on at El Morro. Join El Morro National Monument, located in western New Mexico, in commemorating the US Army Camel Corps on September 10th and 11th. The weekend will be filled with special programming, living history, and live camels! January 1885. As mentioned in previous posts, Sir Garnet Wolseley sent through the Desert a Column, 4 Regiments strong, mounted on camels in relief of Gordon. He feared that his main force that was to follow the Nile would not arrive in time. The desert route was shorter but more dangerous. The desert Column was attacked by the Madhi's Army in Abu Klea and although it won, later on it suffered a myriad of small ambushes that delayed its advance. The Column arrived to Jartum 2 days late. In the images we see a small detachment from the Column that has lagged behind from the main formation. They have not yet realised but, to their back, there is a group of Derviches and Fuzzy Wuzzies willing to avenge the Abu Klea's defeat. Lord Wolseley organised 2 columns from Egypt to try to liberate Gordon who was besieged in Jartum. One would follow the Nile supported by gunboats. The other column would go through the desert. Wolseley formed a Camel Corps which would be the vanguard of the desert column. In the scene, an Officer and a Subofficer of the Camel Corps with their guide stop in an oasis to make a last reconnaissance. The Toy Soldiers (54 mm) are from the Argentinean Maker Beau Geste from its Four Feathers (very appropriate) Collection. #soldaditosdeplomo #Toysoldiers #soldatsdeplomb #soldatinidipiombo #zinnfiguren #colonialwars #sudan #camelcorps

Who knew that US government camels roamed Wilmington? According to @mario_ybarra_jr (and #Vera-verified), camels in #Wilmas were the result of a failed US experiment. #VeraCastaneda writes that ‘Secretary of War, Jefferson Davis, convinced the government to purchase camels for $30,000 in 1850s to improve transportation across US desert lands.’ She continues. ‘In 1858, a caravan of fourteen Arabian camels arrived in Los Angeles, [but] when the Civil War broke out, camels were sent out to several LA Army posts including the Drum Barracks in Wilmington. Since their hooves were not well-adapted to the landscape, the camels would often collapse and die during long journeys. By 1864, the government auctioned off the remaining herd for $2,000.’ Poor camels! Much of Wilmington back then was a marshy wetland and even a non-camel-ologist like myself can anticipate their hooves to turn into a sore jello nub.
