The cone is named for the topmost cap of oxidized, red spatter, which makes it appear bathed in the light of the sunset. In the 1920's, H.S. Colton saved the cone from severe damage by averting the attempt of a Hollywood movie company to blow it up in order to simulate an eruption. This led to the establishment of the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument by President Herbert Hoover in 1930. She represents a wise helper and protector who also gave the gift of weaving to humanity. 2. Astronomer Vesto Slipher discovered the first evidence of the universe’s expansion at Lowell Observatory in 1912. His family contributed the frying pan that served as a lens cap for one of the telescopes. Melanie & I just finished the Coconino Scroll, a public art fence at the Flagstaff AZ airport that illustrates bits of local history. Each story comes with a captioned Footnote sidewalk plaque. We’ve been thinking about this piece as a sort of sculptural graphic novel. The first couple stories… 1. The original plant-based diet, The Three Sisters (corn, beans, & squash) is a form of companion planting known to local Indigenous people for thousands of years. 2. After summering their flocks nearby, Basque sheepherders congregated in Flagstaff at the Tourist Home (built in 1926 by Jesus Garcia) and played ‘pelota’ at the adjacent sandstone handball court. The piece celebrates the interconnected history, culture, and environment of Coconino County, with emphasis on sharing lesser-known stories about the region and its communities. The terrazzo process is pretty amazing. The artist just designs the floor in Illustrator, and the linework gets cut by waterjet. The terrazzo folks fill it in with different colors of a concrete/epoxy mix, and then grind it smooth. A lot of times, public art agencies will specify that they don't necessarily need an artist with public commission experience, because basically, you don't have to know anything about the process in order to design a floor.
