Thanks to Auntie’s Treasures for having an aladdins cave of things I never knew I wanted. Popped in today for one thing, left with this. A new project for me to add to our General Gordon'sVictorian officers campaign tent in the firm of a military campaign hat box and personal effects storage. I guess watch this space to see what I'm going to do with it leading up to a couple of gigs where we will be portraying the Victorian Royal Engineers. We are the only reenactor to appear as General Gordon with all original uniform of the era plus as we declared last month, Gordon actually knew my family well in real life so it's even a more prouder experience being him and hope he looks down with some pride that he's remembered so highly. #ChineseGordon #pashagordon #generalgordon #gordonofkhartoum #burtlancaster #Khartoum #China #chowdogs #militaryhero #saviour #victorianera #queenvictoriasfavourite

It's Chinese New Year and you can't celebrate it any other way really without a visit by Chinese Gordon. The very English military hero of the Victorian era that bought so much back to England via his adventures. From his introduction of the Chow dog to England to the Chinese mulberry seeds he shared with botanists not to mention the huge amount of charitable and educational work Gordon done in his spare time. Booked today for a visit in all original Royal Engineers uniform as worn by Charles Gordon. Remembering today Charles Gordon aka General Gordon, Chinese Gordon and Pasha Gordon who died on this day in 1885 in Khartoum on the steps of the Palace he was residing in while under siege. No body has ever been recovered yet it was seen covered in flies aswell as his severed head place within a tree. Yet, so many memorials around the world were made for one of England's most heroic and much loved military commanders. We take great pride in being the only reenactor to portray Gordon and have been told we do a pretty good job, so with a chant of huzzah and to be in our thoughts here's to the man Queen Victoria called her favourite General and a Happy Birthday to him for the 28th! #gordonofgravesend #generalgordon #Gravesend #gordonofkhartoum #hystericalhistory

Major-General Charles George Gordon CB, was killed on this day 26 January 1885. As a Royal Engineers officer and administrator, he saw action in the Crimean War, and the Tai Ping Rebellion. He served as Governor General of Sudan, among many other posts, before he was killed during the siege of Khartoum in the course of the Mahdist Rebellion. As Gordon had been a Royal Engineer, we hold many items relating to him; if you’d like to see these and learn more, you can visit us at the Museum from Tuesday to Sunday (10am - 5pm). Today in history - 26 January 946 - Eadgyth of England, daughter of Edward the Elder, King of the Anglo-Saxons, sister of Æthelstan, King of the English, and wife of Otto I, King of Germany, dies in Magdeburg, Germany. She was laid to rest at Magdeburg Cathedral in the city her husband had given her as dower. 1340 - King Edward III of England proclaims himself to be the rightful king of France. Edward and his heirs would fight the Hundred Years' War to enforce this claim. 1567 -  Cleric Nicholas Wotton, English courtier and diplomat who negotiated the marriage of King Henry VIII of England and Anne of Cleves, dies in London aged 69/70. 1716 - George Germain, 1st Viscount Sackville, is born. The godson of King George I, Sackville, would serve as Secretary of State for the Colonies, and his ministry would be blamed by many for the loss of the thirteen colonies during the American Revolutionary War. 1763 - Charles XIV John, King of Sweden and Norway, is born in Pau, France. During the Napoleonic Wars, he served as a Marshal of France. 1784 - In a letter to his daughter Sarah Bache, Benjamin Franklin expresses his disapproval that the bald eagle was chosen to be displayed in the national seal. He wrote to his daughter "For my own part I wish the bald eagle had not been chosen the representative of our country. He is a bird of bad moral character. He does not get his living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead tree near the river, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the labour of the Fishing Hawk, and when that diligent bird has at length taken a fish, and is bearing it to his nest for the support of his mate and young ones, the bald eagle pursues him and takes it from him.” **Continued in Comments** #otd #OnThisDay #history #gaelhistory #Scotland #Australia #captainarthurphillip #Sydney #edwardjenner #sydneyharbour #kirkpatrickmacmillan #bicycle #BenjaminFranklin #gordonofkhartoum #vaccines #generalgordon #mahdirebellion #mahdistwar #khartoum #vontrapp #mariavontrapp #thesoundofmusic #vienna #johnlogiebaird #television #DouglasMacArthur #ww2 #romania

Just had an email in for an appearance for General Gordon of Khartoum. I like emails that start with "we saw your pictures and just had to say how great and original your costumes look"....well as confirmed to customer, the jacket which your talking about is original at 130 odd years old and feels great on (along as I don't put on any weight that is otherwise its going down the route of purchasing an officer's corset too😬) Being the only person to portray someone like Gordon feels more like a privilege than anything else. For what seems like a pretty mundane man in his own eyes I find him quite an exciting figure and important to English history. #hystericalhistory #charlesgordon #gordonofkhartoum #pashagordon #chinesegordon #generalgordon #britisharmy #officer #royalengineer #crimea #Khartoum #China

God I love this coat so much! I know others do aswell and I thought I'd get the original out rather than the copy to see if I can fit into it for next weekends appearance as General Gordon, well Lieutenant Colonel Gordon really! Great news it fits. This is an original 150 year old Royal Engineers officers undress frock coat as worn by Gordon in many photos, similarly as the type worn by Prince William and Prince Harry at various functions except this style was only worn by the Royal Engineers during Queen Victoria's reign into the early 20th century. The quality and workmanship is outstanding. If I was ever to get married this would be the coat of choice. #gravesendhistory #generalgordon #militaryuniforms #royalengineershistory #royalengineers #gordonofkhartoum #pashagordon #chinesegordon #Gravesend #Sudan

Great workshop this morning at Chantry school in Gravesend. A school that was once the school set up by General Gordon, although Lieutenant Colonel when at Gravesend. The children were taken on a whirlwind introduction to Charles Gordon from his baby picture to his naughty antics during officer school to the hero he became. We had a Victorian inventions quiz based on the Great Exhibition and built a bridge across the Thames from Gravesend Fort to Tilbury Fort ready for a visit from Queen Victoria. Everyone received their Gordon's Star award too. #workshopsforprimaryschools #Victorianworkshops #primaryschoolworkshops #historyworkshopsforprimaryschools #hystericalhistory #pashagordon #Generalgordon #charlesgeorgegordon #chinesegordon #gordonofkhartoum

Unfortunately today General Gordon had to say good bye to his trusted real hair moustache. They only usually have a 6 wear life expectancy and this has done above and beyond its service. Half of today's workshops were done without it and not one child noticed any difference 🤣, there were one or two looks of 'somethings different' but nothing was said! It is that time again. Our highly anticipated visit to a school originally set up by Charles Gordon where we visit on behalf of Gravesham Borough Council to run a workshop as the man himself, Gordon of Gravesend, or is it Gordon of Khartoum or maybe Pasha Gordon, Chinese Gordon or commonly known by most as General Gordon. Every year we asked by Gravesham Council to attend Chantry Community Academy as a thank you to the pupils for their involvement in his memorial, as well as to keep the memory alive of their founding educational father. We'll attend in uniform as always, they'll be some dress up of children, a Victorian era invention quiz and our Bridge building activity ready for Queen Victoria's visit.......all children will receive their Gordon's Star medal after. #generalgordon #gordonofkhartoum #charlesgeorgegordon #Gravesend #graveshamcouncil #gravesendhistory #localhistory #Queenvictoriasfavouritegeneral #primaryschoolworkshops #historyworkshopsforschools #hystericalhistory Gravesend History Hub Hysterical History

Had to order a new moustache for next week's appearance and looking for a safe place to store it as my top lip is not the right place. So glad we have had some very positive comments recently about our efforts to keep one of England's military heroes alive and not so forgotten, maybe just misunderstood and brought back from the history books. Treading the fence with authenticity, knowledge and also making it fun for children to learn is always a challenge especially when faced with people of alternative knowledge and perspectives and also those that had no idea, we hope we do this with respect, via educational fun and our own view of history. The uniforms give the wow factor, the stories or knowledge engage the public and between every fact lies a silly prop to help the children. We leave the fact on fact on fact to the others, that's why we are Hysterical History #hystericalhistory #generalgordon #GordonofKhartoum #chinesegordon #charlesgordon #charlesggordon #royalengineers #armyofficer #britisharmy #crimea #mahdi #workshopsforschools #primaryschoolworkshops #victorianworkshopsforschools #historyworkshopsforprimaryschools

A little known fact about General Gordon was he actually created his own medal while in Khartoum called the Khartoum Star which he sold to help support his charitable work. They were very poorly made and numerous but lots of soldiers, officers and members of the public wanted one. We, as Gordon own many medals and occasionally give out our copies but for our school workshops we have our own awards to give out to the children in attendance that of our Gordon's Star badges that each child gets. So when we attend the school that Gordon originally set up in Gravesend next week here's what each child will be awarded with. It's the small rewards that inspire soldiers..... I mean children 😏 #generalgordon #khartoumstar #medals #gordonofgravesend #gordonofkhartoum #workshopsforschools #primaryschoolworkshops #historyworkshopsforprimaryschools #victorianworkshopsforschools #hystericalhistory

Today we've taken a special order of our medals to compete General Gordon's uniforms. I'd love to know what Gordon would of thought of the effort we have put into to recreate him, one wonders if he'd of dismissed it as folly or he'd find it somewhat bemusing to be held in such high regard. All of his medals, stars and awards are now recreated and owned to go on where we can find the room on the tunic but so far it's looking really good if not a little heavy to wear, especially so as the original RE cross belt that's over 130 years old is a tad snug and the original RE sword belts definitely more for your slimmer corset wearing soldier......I'm OK at the moment but it's getting harder to keep it in! So I guess our next purchase must be an officer's corset! The medals shown are The Khartoum star (created by Gordon) Order of the Osmaniye (Ottoman) Order of the Bath (British) Order of the Double Dragon (Chinese) Order of the Medjidie (Ottoman) Legion de Honour star (French) Crimean war medal Chinese war medal Sevastapol medal We are also off to a primary school in the next week to run a workshop and talk as General Gordon for the children of the school once set up by Gordon himself when he lived in Gravesend. #medals #honours #victoriansoldiers #Generalgordon #chinesegordon #CharlesGordon #queenvictoria #Gravesham #chinesegordon #gordonofkhartoum #royalengineers #britisharmy #hystericalhistory Hysterical History Gravesend History Hub #gravesendmemorial

Back from Annual leave this week and straight back into shows with the first this coming week with a talk on General Gordon which we call "Gordon's Alive" (said in a Brian Blessed/Flash Gordon voice over) Who was he, why was he held in such high regard and also hated for being difficult, why did he a walking stick named the Wand of Victory, which dog breed did he introduce to England and why did he have so many names he was known by? With such a vivid profile it's no wonder he was Queen Victoria's favourite General. #GeneralGordon #QueenVic #prominentvictorians #QueenVictoria #ChineseGordon #PashaGordon #GordonofKhartoum #CharlesGordon #crimea #chinesewar #sevastopol #Gravesend

Found today, 1884-1886 K Star medal. Sadly bent and missing clasp. There are four variations of the star that correspond to the different campaigns with only one star, the earliest qualified for, awarded to each recipient: Dated 1882: for service in support of the Khedive in the 1882 Anglo-Egyptian War. For service in the Sudan during the Mahdist War: Dated 1884: operations between 19 February and 26 March 1884, relating to the first Suakin Expedition. Dated 1884-6: operations from 26 March 1884 to 7 October 1886, including the Nile expedition to relieve General Gordon besieged at Khartoum and for the 1885 operations near Suakin. Undated: operations from 1887 to 1891, mainly near Suakin and along the Nile. #metaldetectingfindsuk #metaldetecting #metaldetectingfinds #medalsoftheworld #medal #medalofhonor #gordonofkhartoum #19thcentury #militaryhistory #miltary

Great morning spent at Chantry school in Gravesend on behalf of Gravesham Council teaching all the children about General Gordon and Victorian life. Children seemed to be very interested in the early and somewhat naughty life of Gordon (especially his baby picture), flushing toilets and the life of a tosher and as always dressing up and the activities. Comedy is the binding glue that brings it all together....though have never seen any evidence of Gordon being funny! Also managed to present the school with a framed Star of Khartoum which was one of Gordon's own medals given to his troops. #gravesend #chantryschool #thamesdefences #Generalgordon #gordonofkhartoum #pashagordon #ChineseGordon #royalengineers #QueenVictoria @visit_gravesend @remuseum @realeeds2019

Well I'm really impressed with these. 3d copies of General Gordon's 'Star of Khartoum' issued in 1884 by Gordon to whom he felt deserved them and that's exactly what I plan to do when I'm in uniform as Gordon. These special medals have been designed and created by Andrew Turner for myself with the sole purpose of issuing them to whatever person I feel deserves them. Gordon designed the medal and based it on his own awarded medal the order of Osmaneigh. To him it was a great way of funding his charitable work for the poor and its Arabic inscription says 'Siege of Khartoum Who I wonder will be special enough to receive this prestigious award in the future when I step out as Lt Colonel Charles Gordon? #Generalgordon #PashaGordon #GordonofKhartoum #royalengineers #gravesend #QueenVictoria #Victorian #workshopsforschools #stpaulscathedral #bromptonbarracks

Focusing on General Gordon a bit today so here's a great little unknown story. When Gordon left China to take up his commission in #Gravesend in #Kent he brought with him from China 3 chow puppies. One was named Wang and was given to the wife of another army officer. When the officer was posted overseas the dog was given to the Gordon boy's orphanage at Dover where one Robert Robinson was residing who became the keeper. It was said that Gordon was responsible for introducing the breed to Great Britain and once did create such a fad that every fashionable Londoner wanted a chow dog. #royalengineer #gravesend #pashagordon #hystericalhistory #generalgordon #gordonofkhartoum #chinesegordon #dogloversfeed

26th January 1885 GORDON KILLED IN KHARTOUM Gordon had been appointed by the Egyptians to evacuate the city during the Mahdist revolt. Instead he decided to stay put and defend the city. The British Prime Minister, Gladstone, was furious as the press whipped up a campaign to send a British army to rescue him. Before relief could arrive, the Mahdi’s forces stormed Khartoum and Gordon was killed at his palace. The Mahdi died shortly afterwards but Sudan remained an independent Islamic state for the next 14 years until the British returned under Kitchener. #britishhistory #britishempire #scrambleforafrica #gordonofkhartoum #victorians #militaryhistory #onthisdayinhistory #historian

Today we celebrate one of my all time heroes. On this day in 1885 and two days before his birthday General Gordon was killed. Every year, I usually celebrate by attending primary schools in uniform to conduct a workshop then after to a ceremony in memory of his death. British Major-General Charles “Chinese” Gordon of Khartoum, CB (1833 - 1885). A veteran of the Crimean War, the Taiping Rebellion, the Second Opium War, and the Mahdist War in the Sudan where he finally met his fate at the siege and fall of Khartoum. He is recognized as one of the greatest military heroes and colonial administrators of the British Victorian Empire. From my collection. ❤️🇬🇧 #chinesegordon #generalcharlesgordon #gordonofkhartoum #taipingrebellion #opiumwar #opiumwars #mahdistwars #seigeofkhartoum #sudanwars #britisharmy #britishgeneral #britishmilitary #britishempire #victoriangentleman #victorianhistory #militaryhistory #britishhistory #egyptianhistory #chinesehistory #royalengineers #royalengineersmuseum #historylovers #charlesgordon ❤️🇬🇧

We think she would have been a supporter of International Women’s Day. An intriguing regency oil on canvas portrait of Miss Craddock who, verso, is decsribed as an older relative of the infamous General of Khartoum who was killed in action in Khartoum, Sudan in 1885. Miss Craddock's enigmatic smile makes for a truly wonderful portrait. Small area of paint loss to right of sitter. Today marks 135 years since the birth of General Charles George Gordon, better known to history as 'Gordon of Khartoum'. He lost his life fighting with great courage to the very end. His final heroic moments are depicted in this fine painting 'General Gordon's Last Stand'. . According to contemporary accounts, "with his life's blood pouring from his breast... he fought his way step by step... he breathed his last as he turned to face his last assailant, half raised his sword to strike, and fell dead with his face to heaven." . Gordon is remembered by several statues around the world, but one in particular holds special meaning for us - the one raised to his memory by his own proud Gordon kinsmen - erected with their donations in the city of Aberdeen. Though fate took him far from his clan's heartlands, he never forgot his history, saying once "You are a chief of the Gordons and I am a clansman, whose duty it is to come to the assistance of his chief". . . . #houseofgordon #clangordon #gordonclan #bydand #gordonofkhartoum #militaryhistory #khartoum #sudan #generalgordon #chinesegordon #britishhistory #history #heritage #scotspirit #scotslandisnow #gordon #gordonfamily #gordonpasha #royalengineers #gordonslaststand #courage #glory #siege #semperfidelis
