🎖MAY 9, 1926–Polar explorer Richard Byrd and co-pilot Floyd Bennett fly over the North Pole in a triple-engine Fokker monoplane, marking the first time an aircraft crosses the top of the world. The flight’s earlier-than-expected return prompts some to challenge the achievement. However, a scientific committee of the National Geographic Society confirms the historic crossing, and Byrd (left) and Bennett (right) are awarded Medals of Honor by President Calvin Coolidge. 📸 Photo credit: National Museum of the U.S. Navy ➡️ More History Highlights at www.time-rewind.com. ______ #aviation #RichardByrd #FloydBennett #Coolidge #NorthPole #MedalOfHonor #onthisday #otd #May9 #1920s #history #popculture #TimeRewind

Back with another edition of Cranston education history - this time about the namesake of George J. Peters Elementary! Peters was a Cranston native and joined the @usarmy in 1943, and by March 24, 1945, was serving as a private in Company G, 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 17th Airborne Division. On that day, his unit was dropped by parachute across the Rhine River near Flüren, a suburb of Germany. Immediately upon landing, Peters single-handedly attacked a German machine gun emplacement which was firing on his group. He succeeded in destroying the position despite being mortally wounded during his advance. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor eleven months later, on February 8, 1946. Peters was buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery, in Margraten, the Netherlands. Swipe to see the text from his #medalofhonor citation, and his stone at the Netherlands American Cemetery.

‘Red Platoon’ by @clintonromesha ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 If you ever read one military combat nonfiction book in your lifetime, I urge you to choose this one. I’m very familiar with the story of Clint and his band of brothers, given the impossible task of defending an indefensible combat outpost in Afghanistan during the fall of 2009. This heart-wrenching recount of brotherhood, bravery, valor and sacrifice will move you to your core. I actually had to stop listening to the audiobook at work, with full knowledge of the final outcome, because I felt like I was going to break down. How lucky we are as Americans to have such men and women in our armed forces who will go above and beyond the call of duty to protect our freedoms. Many of these men were the same age as my younger brother currently serving in the Army, so it really hit home for me. It’s the best book of the year for me, and one of the best I’ve ever read. Clint, a Medal of Honor recipient, tells THEIR story, not his story. Please, please read this book if you have the chance. The eight men who paid the ultimate sacrifice at COP Keating on October 3rd, 2009 deserve special mention. May history always remember what they and their families gave to their country. - SSG Justin T. Gallegos - SGT Christopher Griffin - PFC Kevin C. Thomson - SGT Michael P. Scusa - SSG Vernon T. Martin - SGT Joshua T. Kirk - SGT Joshua M. Hardt - SPC Stephan L. Mace

U.S. Marine Corps Medal of Honor Recipient Frank Reasoner: On July 12, 1965, a reconnaissance patrol led by Lieutenant Reasoner had deeply penetrated heavily controlled enemy territory when it came under extremely heavy fire from an estimated 50 to 100 Viet Cong insurgents. Accompanying the advance party and the point that consisted of five men, he immediately deployed his men for an assault after the Viet Cong had opened fire from numerous concealed positions. Boldly shouting encouragement, and virtually isolated from the main body, he organized a base of fire for an assault on the enemy positions. The slashing fury of the Viet Cong machine-gun and automatic-weapons fire made it impossible for the main body to move forward. Repeatedly exposing himself to the devastating attack Lt. Reasoner skillfully provided covering fire, killing at least two Viet Cong and effectively silencing an automatic-weapons position in a valiant attempt to effect evacuation of a wounded man. As casualties began to mount his radio operator was wounded and Lt. Reasoner immediately moved to his side and tended his wounds. When the radio operator was hit a second time while attempting to reach a covered position, Lt. Reasoner courageously running to his aid through a hail of machine-gun fire was struck numerous times by enemy fire causing him to fall foward mortally wounded. He took his last breath with his rifle in hand moving toward the enemy. His indomitable fighting spirit, valiant leadership, and unflinching devotion to duty provided the inspiration that was to enable the patrol to complete its mission without further casualties. In the face of almost certain death he gallantly gave his life in the service of his country. On this day, we honor Medal of Honor recipient Fireman 2nd Class Telesforo Trinidad. He is the only Filipino in the @usnavy to be awarded the Medal of Honor. Trinidad received the Medal of Honor in peacetime when his ship, USS San Diego (CA 6), suffered multiple boiler explosions in the engine rooms while underway on January 21, 1915. Despite being clear of the affected spaces, Trinidad braved through burning and flooding compartments to carry two of his fellow Sailors to safety. To this day, the heroism and courage displayed by Trinidad serves as an inspiration to Sailors across the fleet. #GreatestGeneration: #MedalofHonor recipient Francis Way was born in Oahu on April 14, 1917, the son of a Chinese immigrant and a Native Hawaiian. He grew up surfing with the “father of surfing” Duke Kahanamoku, graduated from Punahou School where he played track, football, and baseball, and earned a bachelor's degree in banking and finance from UCLA. He enlisted in the Hawaii National Guard in 1940 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in September 1941. His commission was rare at the time, due to the fact that few Asian Americans were allowed to serve in combat leadership roles. He returned to Hawaii to serve as an intelligence officer for the 24th Infantry Division based at Schofield Barracks. He was at Schofield Barracks during the Pearl Harbor attack, where his unit became one of the first to participate in the Pacific War by firing back at Japanese aircraft. After serving throughout the Pacific, Francis landed in the northern part of Leyte Island with the 24th Infantry Division in October 1944. From his Medal of Honor citation: "Captain Wai landed at Red Beach, Leyte, in the face of accurate, concentrated enemy fire from gun positions advantageously located in a palm grove bounded by submerged rice paddies. Finding the first four waves of American soldiers leaderless, disorganized, and pinned down on the open beach, he immediately assumed command. Issuing clear and concise orders, and disregarding heavy machine gun and rifle fire, he began to move inland through the rice paddies without cover. The men, inspired by his cool demeanor and heroic example, rose from their positions and followed him. "During the advance, Captain Wai repeatedly determined the locations of enemy strong points by deliberately exposing himself to draw their fire. In leading an assault upon the last remaining Japanese pillbox in the area, he was killed by its occupants. Captain Wai's courageous aggressive leadership inspired the men, even after his death, to advance and destroy the enemy." #AANHPI #NeverForget #RememberHonorUnderstand #WWII #WorldWarII #PacificWar #PacificTheater #PearlHarbor

This month we pay homage to Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders who have resiliently protected our Nation’s lands and seas. Today we honor Fireman Second Class Telesforo de la Cruze Trinidad, who passed away #OTD in 1968. In 1901, President McKinley's executive order allowed 500 Filipino Sailors to enlist in the U.S. Navy, and Trinidad was one of these Sailors. In 1915, while aboard USS San Diego, he demonstrated extraordinary courage during a tragic explosion. Despite severe injuries, he selflessly rescued two incapacitated sailors, earning him the Medal of Honor. As we celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, let's remember Trinidad's valor and his enduring legacy of bravery and sacrifice. #AAPIHeritageMonth #MedalofHonor #USNavyHistory

U.S. Army Medal of Honor Recipient Ronald Ray: On June 19, 1966, Captain Ray was serving as a platoon leader when another U.S. platoon in the area was attacked by a large Viet Cong company. Captain Ray organized a reaction force and quickly moved through two kilometers of mountainous jungle terrain to the contact area. After breaking through the hostile lines to reach the beleaguered patrol, Captain Ray began directing the reinforcement of the site. When an enemy position pinned down three of his men with a heavy volume of automatic-weapons fire, he silenced the emplacement with a grenade and killed four Viet Cong with his rifle fire. As medics were moving a casualty toward a sheltered position, they began receiving intense hostile fire. While directing suppressive fire on the enemy position, Captain Ray moved close enough to silence the enemy with a grenade. A few moments later Captain Ray saw an enemy grenade land, unnoticed, near two of his men. Without hesitation or regard for his safety he dove between the grenade and the men, thus shielding them from the explosion while receiving wounds in his exposed feet and legs. He immediately sustained additional wounds in his legs from an enemy machine gun, but nevertheless he silenced the emplacement with another grenade. Although suffering great pain from his wounds, Captain Ray continued to direct his men, providing the outstanding courage and leadership they vitally needed, and prevented their annihilation by successfully leading them from their surrounded position. Only after assuring that his platoon was no longer in immediate danger did he allow himself to be evacuated for medical treatment. #Medalofhonor #Military #USArmy #Soldier #Militarylife #Warhistory

🎖 HALL OF VALOR//MAY 8, 1945: The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pride in presenting the Medal of Honor (Posthumously) to Private First Class Anthony L. Krotiak, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action above and beyond the call of duty on 8 May 1945, while serving with Company I, 148th Infantry, 37th Infantry Division, in action at Balete Pass, Luzon, Philippine Islands. Private First Class Krotiak was an acting squad leader, directing his men in consolidating a newly won position on Hill B when the enemy concentrated small arms fire and grenades upon him and four others, driving them to cover in an abandoned Japanese trench. A grenade thrown from above landed in the center of the group. Instantly pushing his comrades aside and jamming the grenade into the earth with his rifle butt, he threw himself over it, making a shield of his body to protect the other men. The grenade exploded under him, and he died a few minutes later. By his extraordinary heroism in deliberately giving his life to save those of his comrades, Private First Class Krotiak set an inspiring example of utter devotion and self-sacrifice which reflects the highest traditions of the military service. 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team #hallofvalor #armyhistory #OhioHistory #OTD #ohionationalguard #37thInfantryDivision #buckeyedivision #buckeye #Luzon79 #WWII #Luzon #MedalofHonor #WellDoIt #148thInfantryRegiment

~Albert Mills We have a Ft Hancock #harbordefensehappybirthday ! Today, we honor Maj. Gen. Albert Leopold Mills, born (Sun) May 7 1854, in New York City. He attended the US Military Academy at West Point, NY, where he graduates on June 13th, 1879. He commissions into the Cavalry, going “out west” where he fights the Indians at the Battle of Crow Agency, MT, on Nov. 5, 1887. He participated in the Sioux Campaign in the winter of 189-91. Other duties also included academic postings as an instructor at West Point and the Citadel. With the Spanish American War in 1898, he goes to Cuba with the US Volunteers, including the famed Rough Riders. He was heavily engaged at Las Guasimas on June 24. And then, came the famed charge up San Juan Hill on July 1st. In the teeth of Spanish fire, Albert charges in head-long with his men. He’s shot - through the head. Miraculously, he’s only blinded. So, what’s he do? He gets up, blood pouring out of him, and URGES HIS TROOPERS FORWARD. He makes a full recovery, and is made Superintendent of West Point from 1898-1904, where he suppresses the hazing. In 1902, a well-earned Medal of Honor is bestowed for his actions on San Juan Hill. Promoted to Major General in 1916, he dies of a sudden illness on Sept. 18th, 1916, aged 62. He was buried win the West Point Cemetery. However, his legacy of service doesn’t end there. By 1916, the Army was modernizing the Coast Artillery with a new, long-range barbette carriage, the M1917. These new pieces would give the venerable 12-inch M1895 rifles an increased range of some 17 miles. Two of these batteries were earmarked for Ft Hancock, NJ. Built on Sandy Hook Bay, one would be named “Battery Albert Mills” in his honor. Construction began in March 1917 with transfer to the Coast Artillery in 1921. Battery Mills would operate as a keystone of the Harbor Defenses until 1946. Now, the bay water is closing in, the interior's disintegrating, the exterior's overgrown, and it's closed off due to “hazardous conditions.” The Battery may be vanishing, but General Mills’ legacy of exemplary service, and the Battery that carries his name are in the safest of hands, here.

On May 7, 1970, only seventeen days after his arrival in Vietnam, PFC Kenneth Michael Kays earned the Medal of Honor for valor beyond the call of duty. PFC Kays was opposed to the war and was a conscientious objector serving as a medic. He was assigned to Company D, 1-506th Infantry in the 101st Airborne Division, which was constructing Firebase Maureen in the A Shau Valley to support Operation Texas Star. On the night of May 7th PFC Kays’ company was attacked by elements of the North Vietnamese Army. Enemy sappers and infantry assaulted their defensive positions, wounding and killing several of the defenders. Disregarding the heavy fire, PFC Kays moved to the perimeter to render assistance, but his movement drew the attention of the enemy who concentrated their fire in his direction. An enemy explosive charge severed the lower portion of PFC Kays’ left leg. He applied a tourniquet and continued on, aiding the wounded and helping move them to a safe location. He returned to the perimeter, again retrieving a wounded comrade, shielding him with his body while moving him to the interior of the firebase. Weak from loss of blood, exhausted, and in excruciating pain, PFC Kays returned to the perimeter once again and then ventured beyond the perimeter into enemy held territory to treat and retrieve another wounded comrade. Only after his fellow soldiers had been treated and evacuated did PFC Kays permit his own wounds to be treated. PFC Kays’ courage and selfless acts saved lives and inspired others in his company to repel the enemy. For his heroism, PFC Kays was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Nixon on October 15, 1973. . #KennethKays #MedalOfHonor #ArmyMedicineHistory #OperationTexasStar #Vietnam

On May 7th, 1890 Sergeant George Jordan; Buffalo Soldier of the 9th Cavalry, Company K earned the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Indian Wars of the western United States. Jordan joined the Army from Nashville, Tennessee after the Civil War, initially joining the 38th Infantry on Christmas Day, 1866. In 1870 he transferred to the 9th Cavalry, Company K. Jordan worked hard to earn his education and the trust of Captain Charles Parker. He was promoted to Corporal in 1874 and Sergeant in 1879. It was in 1880, at Fort Tularosa in New Mexico, in hostile Apache territory that Jordan became a hero for the U.S. military. On 14 May 1880, following a difficult forced march at night, a twenty-five man detachment under Jordan successfully repulsed a determined attack on old Fort Tularosa, New Mexico, by more numerous Apaches. The next year on 12 August, still campaigning against the Apaches, Jordan’s actions contributed to the survival of a detachment under Captain Parker when they were ambushed in Carrizo Canyon, New Mexico. The Medal of Honor Citation reads: “While commanding a detachment of 25 men at Fort Tularosa, N. Mex., repulsed a force of more than 100 Indians. At Carrizo Canyon, N . Mex., while commanding the right of a detachment of 19 men, on 12 August 1881, he stubbornly held his ground in an extremely exposed position and gallantly forced back a much superior number of the enemy, preventing them from surrounding the command.” He was also awarded the Certificate of Merit for his actions at the Carrizo Canyon engagement, which brought with it an additional $2 a month in extra pay. Jordan reached the rank of First Sergeant before leaving the Army in 1897. After retirement, he lived in a community with fellow Buffalo soldiers in Crawford, Nebraska. He died in 1904 and was buried in Fort McPherson National Cemetery, Maxwell, Nebraska. #buffalosoldiers #blacksoldiers #medalofhonor #courageunderfire #9thcavalry #ushistory #blackhistory #certificateofmerit

As we commemorate Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we honor Visalia native Kazuo Otani. During World War II, Otani was serving as an Army Staff Sergeant with the “Go For Broke” 442nd Regimental Combat Team. Serving in Italy in July 1944, Otani’s platoon was pinned down in a wheat field by heavy enemy fire. Otani fearlessly left his cover to fire upon the enemy and create a diversion for his comrades. During the battle, Otani repeatedly risked his life to help his platoon. At one point, he dragged a wounded comrade to safety. While he was providing emergency first aid to that soldier, Otani was mortally wounded by machine gun fire. Otani was only 26. He was buried in Veterans Liberty Cemetery in Fresno. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. #AAPIHeritageMonth #MedalOfHonor #Visalia

John Plaster (RT HAWAII) with his EPIC “Walt Shumate” mustache practicing with Doug Miller (RT VERMONT). PC-Jason Hardy’s RT VERMONT TEAM HISTORY I asked the guys what John and Doug were using and Carl as usual had the answer for us! Courtesy of CCS/CCC/46th CO vet Carl Franquet -“It’s a kama, Okinawa sickle. It’s a martial arts weapon. When the Japanese banned the Okinawans from owning weapons in the 1800s, the Okinawans improvised by using common tools and farm implements as weapons. Kama or sickle, eku or boat oar, bo or staff, tonfa or tunfa were some. I studied Ryuku kobudo (Okinawan weapons) and Goju-ryu under master Uehara Ko in Naha. Miller has nunchaku (they were used to flail rice). They were popular at CCC when I was there. One of the Philippino mechanics made them for us. I still have my pair from there. When Miller was in 46th Co, he was notorious for walking around with his nunchaku. #macvsog #medalofhonor #specialforces

Medal of Honor- SPC4 Larry Dahl Army, 359th Transportation CO, 29th Transportation BN Born in 1949 in Oregon City, Oregon Larry G. Dahl joined the Army in 1969 as truck driver. He was assigned to the 359th Transportation CO, 29th Transportation BN. His company was operating in Binh Dinh Province, South Vietnam providing resupply to various units in the OE. SPC4 Dahl was part of a guntruck crew, which were 2 1/2 ton trucks heavily modified with armor and weapons to provide convoy security. On 23 February, 1971 a fuel convoy was attacked on the QL19 highway. SPC4 Dahl’s crew and 2 other guntrucks were dispatched to assist. Their timely arrival cause a large number of casualties amongst the enemy and it seemed forced a withdrawal. As his vehicle was backing up to turn for home, an enemy fire team approached the guntruck. One of them threw a hand grenade into the back. With no concern whatsoever for his life, SPC4 Dahl jumped onto the grenade, absorbing the explosion with his body, and saving his team mates from death or more severe injury. SPC4 Dahl’s family received his MOH in 1974. #military #militaryhistory #history #usarmy #MOH #MedalOfHonor #vietnamwar #sustainment #logisitics #enablers #transportation #88M

Unlike most museums, the Chaplains Museum acts as a student laboratory for history as well as other disciplines. In addition to our student staff and volunteers who work in the museum, other students use the Museum as a research source for their classes. One recent example is Kacie Wooten who elected to research a chaplain for a paper assigned in Modern American Military History. Kacie was drawn to the topic because she plans to become an Army Chaplain and she was inspired by the service and sacrifice of Father Emil Kapaun who died as a POW in the Korean War. With the encouragement of her professor, Kacie decided to enter her research in the poster section for Liberty University’s Research Week. After the presentation, she offered the poster to the Museum. We will soon be integrating her work into our Service to the Suffering exhibit. Visit the Chaplains Museum to see the work students like Kacie are doing to preserve the memory and legacy of US military chaplains. #history #ushistory #militaryhistory #chaplainsmuseum #chaplain #chaplains #armychaplaincorps #militarychaplain #koreanwar #medalofhonor #catholic #studenthistory #saint #historystudent #studentresearch

On this day in airborne history, 1968, SP4C (later CSM) Robert M. Patterson of 2d Sqdn, 17th Cav, @101st_ab singlehandedly assaulted and destroyed five enemy bunkers whose fire had pinned down his comrades. Medal of Honor citation below: “For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Sgt. Patterson (then Sp4c.) distinguished himself while serving as a fire team leader of the 3d Platoon, Troop B, during an assault against a North Vietnamese Army battalion which was entrenched in a heavily fortified position. When the leading squad of the 3d Platoon was pinned down by heavy interlocking automatic-weapons and rocket-propelled-grenade fire from two enemy bunkers, Sgt. Patterson and the two other members of his assault team moved forward under a hail of enemy fire to destroy the bunkers with grenade and machine-gun fire. Observing that his comrades were being fired on from a third enemy bunker covered by enemy gunners in one-man spider holes, Sgt. Patterson, with complete disregard for his safety and ignoring the warnings of his comrades that he was moving into a bunker complex, assaulted and destroyed the position. Although exposed to intensive small-arms and grenade fire from the bunkers and their mutually supporting emplacements, Sgt. Patterson continued his assault upon the bunkers which were impeding the advance of his unit. Sgt. Patterson singlehandedly destroyed by rifle and grenade fire five enemy bunkers, killed eight enemy soldiers, and captured seven weapons. His dauntless courage and heroism inspired his platoon to resume the attack and to penetrate the enemy defensive position. Sgt. Patterson’s action at the risk of his life has reflected great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.”

- MoH Monday #25 Benjamin Franklin Tracy - Benjamin Tracy was the 34 year old lawyer turned Col of the 109th NYVI, one of 3 regt’s he was assigned to raise. On May 6th, 1864, during the battle of the Wilderness, the 109th was one of the newly assigned units from DC to join Burnside’s 9th Corps. They had spent the first 18 months of their enlistments guarding railways to and from DC, Annapolis, & Baltimore. Now they were in their first fight as Burnside was ordered to take his men in and fill the Federal center lines between the 5th & 2nd Corps. It didn’t take long for their lines to become disorganized in the face of veteran rebel troops in the mess of the Wilderness. Many around him began to pull back, being overwhelmed with the destruction and flame before them. Tracy, not backing down and knowing the seriousness of the position, went to his Color Guard, ripped the nat’l colors from its carrier, turned and planted them atop the hastily made earthworks. As the lead flew around him, his men looked on in amazement as their commander, just as new to the ferociousness of battle as they were, stood gallantly in the smoke and danger. The stance brought forth resolve to his men as their rallied determination began to hold together the federal center. Reports say Tracy was slightly wounded during the action which led to his resignation on May 17th, though his declining health and heart issues were more than likely the true culprit. He went on to briefly be the Col of the 127th USCT, last commandant of Elmira POW Camp, and breveted Brig Gen in 1867 for his actions at the Wilderness. He was issued the MoH on June 21, 1895. @fredspotnps @mohmuseum #civilwar #medalofhonor #moh #ohio #wilderness #battleofthewilderness #1864 #overland #honor #courage #commitment #sacrifice #newyork #gettysburgguard #colorguard #honorguard #medalofhonormonday

#MedalOfHonor Monday! On this day in 1968, a hero engages in an action that would earn him the Medal of Honor. Robert M. Patterson was barely 20 years old when his heroic action occurred. He was then serving as a fire team leader with the 101st Airborne near La Chu, South Vietnam. “[I]t was a typical morning,” he explained. “We got up, received our mission. It was to go out and do a recon on this village and find out what was really in there.” It wasn’t until early afternoon that “all hell broke loose,” as Patterson later said. An infantry squad near his platoon took a hard hit, decimating their ranks. “And then, right after that, it was just one big fight,” Patterson concludes. In the midst of it all, his platoon became pinned down. That’s when Patterson sprang into action. He later couldn’t remember what he’d done, but his fellow soldiers report that he grabbed his M16 & a handful of grenades. His Medal of Honor citation reports that he assaulted the enemy bunkers, taking out 5 and killing 8 of the enemy. The next morning, he was awarded a Silver Star. “And I’m thinking to myself, ‘Why am I getting this? I didn’t do anything,’” he later laughed. He was even more bewildered when that Silver Star was later upgraded to a Medal. “I don’t even remember the action,” Patterson said. He more or less has to guess at what motivated him to act as he did, but he thinks “it was a combination of things. Fear, adrenaline, a knowledge that something had to be done. . . . you’re depending on them, they’re depending on you.” Patterson would go on to serve in the Army for just over 26 years. To this day, he views his status as a Medal recipient as an important responsibility. “[Medal of Honor recipients wear] it for everyone who was there and particularly for those who didn’t come back,” Patterson told the Veterans History Project. “It is much harder to wear that ribbon than to earn it.” FULL STORY: TaraRoss.com #tdih #otd #history #USArmy #ShareTheHistory

Major Winters memorial near Utah Beach. Honoring a true hero at the Dick Winters Memorial. Major Richard "Dick" Winters was a distinguished officer known for his leadership during World War II, particularly as the commanding officer of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in the 101st Airborne Division. His remarkable leadership and courage were immortalized in the acclaimed miniseries "Band of Brothers," which depicted the experiences of Easy Company. Visiting his memorial is a humbling reminder of the sacrifices made by brave individuals like Major Winters to secure our freedom. Today we are sharing the story of Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sgt. Edward Noboru Kaneshiro to kick off our monthlong celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Kaneshiro was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1928 and was the son of Japanese immigrants. After he joined the Army in April 1959, he was stationed on Oahu and did noncombat tours in Japan and South Korea before being sent to Vietnam in 1966. In December 1966, Kaneshiro was on a mission with his platoon to clear North Vietnamese and Viet Cong fighters from the Kim Son Valley when they came upon a village that was home to a concealed force of heavily-fortified enemy fighters. The Soldiers from the two squads that had advanced to the village center came under heavy fire and were quickly pinned down, incurring many casualties and the loss of the platoon leader. Upon hearing the gunfire, Kaneshiro ordered his squad to take cover and advanced forward to attack the enemy alone, armed with only six grenades and his rifle. He singlehandedly cleared the trench that was sheltering the attacking force, allowing the pinned-down Soldiers to escape to safety and his platoon to regroup and withdraw from the village. Kaneshiro was initially awarded the Silver Star for his actions that day and was being considered for the Medal of Honor when he was killed in March 1967 while trying to help a wounded comrade during an ambush. His Silver Star was subsequently upgraded to the Distinguished Service Cross in October 1967. In June 2022, after decades of requests by Kaneshiro's family, the Distinguished Service Cross was upgraded to the Medal of Honor, which was posthumously presented to his son on July 5, 2022. #SoldierForLife #USArmySFL #AAPIHM #MedalOfHonor

It’s been a week since I came home from one of the most humbling experiences in my career. I’m still processing @honorflightsandiego with 90 Vietnam era US Naval Special Warfare veterans. From hearing brave, courageous stories from highly decorated men including Medal of Honor recipient Michael Thornton, to the US Navy Secretary who stopped to thank them for paving the way for US Navy SEALs, the word “healing” was felt from takeoff to the unforgettable homecoming that these men have deserved for 50 years. Their pain has been buried for so many years and for others they’ve spent their life trying to work through it. Honor Flight gave them the healing they’ve always needed. I’m forever grateful to gain the veterans trust and have the opportunity to share their stories. Medal of Honor citation reads: The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant George Frank Robie, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on September, 1864, while serving with Company D, 7th New Hampshire Infantry, in action at Richmond, Virginia, for gallantry on the skirmish line. — R. T. Lincoln, Secretary of War George Frank Robie (17 June 1844 - 5 June 1891) was a first lieutenant in the United States Army who was awarded the Medal Of Honor for gallantry during the American Civil War. He was awarded the medal on 12 June 1883 for actions performed during the Siege of Petersburg in 1864. Before enlisting in New Hampshire, Robie had served a term with the 8th Massachusetts Infantry defending Washington D.C. He enlisted with Company D of the 7th New Hampshire Infantry as a sergeant on 25 September 1861 & was promoted to first sergeant on 28 December 1863. On 15 September 1864, while still a sergeant, Robie demonstrated great bravery during a reconnaissance towards Richmond, which eventually earned him the Medal of Honor. He was promoted to first lieutenant of Company G on 28 October 1864. He was eventually transferred back to Company D & then to Company B before mustering out on 20 July 1865 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Robie was born on 17 June 1844 in Candia, New Hampshire to parents Nathaniel D. Robie & Ruth Jane Robie (nee Moore). Nathaniel Robie also served in the Army but did not survive the war. Robie had one younger brother, John Freeman Parker Robie, who lived until 1917. After the war, Robie joined the Louis Bell Post of the G.A.R. & helped charter a post in Galveston, Texas. He worked as a bookkeeper. Robie died on 5 June 1891 in Galveston of “rheumatism”, most likely liver disease, & is buried in New City Cemetery in Galveston. #USA #USArmy #MedalOfHonor #AmericanCivilWar #SiegeOfPetersburg #NewHampshire #Texas #Galveston 🇺🇸

The Airborne Museum in Sainte-Mère-Église is undoubtedly one of the most captivating and intriguing museums I've ever visited. Featuring a wide array of fascinating artifacts, it offers a glimpse into the history of airborne troops during World War II. In the second photo, we see a model of the M1941 paratrooper uniform, the initial design that was later replaced by the M1942 version, as depicted in the third photo. The fourth photo showcases the flag of the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division, which played a significant role in numerous battles from Sicily to Normandy and Holland. Moving on to the fifth photo, we observe the headquarters of the 82nd Airborne, with General James Gavin prominently featured. The sixth photo highlights the turret battalion of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, with Commander Robert Cole, a Medal of Honor recipient, at its center. In the seventh photo, we witness a meticulous recreation of paratroopers from the 101st Airborne boarding an AC47 airplane. The eighth photo showcases the jump boots of General Matthew Ridgway, the commander of the 82nd Airborne Division during World War II. Additionally, there are images depicting American forces in various operations, including Torch, Husky, and Avalanche. The museum also features displays of General Ridgway and General Gavin, along with paintings, uniforms, and other artifacts that offer a comprehensive view of airborne history. #AirborneMuseum #SainteMèreÉglise #WW2History #Paratroopers #82ndAirborne #101stAirborne #GeneralRidgway #GeneralGavin #MedalOfHonor #MilitaryHistory
