Intriguing re-use of a medieval chapel associated with Leiston Abbey to hide a Second World War pillbox. Whilst the front is pretty well camouflaged the brick rear is more obvious and was visible enough for some passing ME 109s to machine gun it in 1941, fortunately with no ill effects. There are lots of other concrete defenses nearby on what would have been a very vulnerable stretch of coast for possible German invasion. #conflictarchaeology #pillbox #medievalarchaeology #suffolk
It's Liberation Day in the Channel Islands tomorrow and while that meant the end of the German occupation for the islanders, it also finally meant freedom for the many hundreds of slave labourers brought to the Channel Islands by the Germans. They were forced to construct the numerous defensive installations across the islands, many perishing in the process, and there are many stories of brave islanders helping and hiding escaped workers. I was lucky to revisit the @jerseywartunnels on my recent Jersey trip, where a number of unfinished tunnels are testament to the horrendous conditions the workers endured. #conflictarchaeology #jersey #liberationday #wartunnels

Conflict archaeology. Theme: Cold War. Excavating Porkkala Parenthesis. Immediately after the end of the Continuation War (Finnish-Soviet war of 1941-1944, part of the World War II) the USSR imposed, among other almost overwhelming demands, one particular condition: the areas west of Helsinki, around Kirkkonummi, Porkkalanniemi, Upinniemi and the fortress island of Mäkiluoto, were to be emptied of all population and leased to the USSR for 50 years, for the purpose of establishing a Soviet naval base. Finland had no choice but to agree, despite the obvious threat to Helsinki and the need to evacute over 7 thousand additional people, along with hundreds of thousands others from the permanently lost Karelian territories. The base became known as Porkkala Udd in the USSR.

For your average German soldier, Jersey was a pretty decent posting (there were certainly worse options!) as it was relatively safe. Although the Allies never attempted to recapture the Channel Islands, they did occasionally come into direct contact with the German occupiers, who would fire at passing aircraft or shipping. The only place I've potentially seen direct evidence of that interaction is on the bunkers at Les Landes which have a series of small arms impact scars on them. This strikes me as perhaps an Allied aircraft having a bit of a pop at the Germans, especially as it's in a relatively remote part of the island, away from civilians. I've found spent German cartridges here in the past too, suggesting that there may have been some returned fire as well. #conflictarchaeology #jersey #battlefieldarchaeology
The Germans left a lot of stuff in Jersey, one of the more interesting details being this diagram above an artillery position within a bunker built into Elizabeth Castle. It gives the ranges of various landmarks and notable rocks in the vicinity of St Helier harbour. WW2 anti tank ditch in full effect, flooded by the rain of the past winter. This German defence measurement near Assen was dug by forced labourers at the end of the war, but was never used. Being present in a national park, it can still be seen today.

These involve landscape reconnaissance, survey, and recording supplemented by historical research and oral history. Hunting for the Civil War defences of Plymouth, 2014. The outer works were projected to come through this site which was being redeveloped, although unfortunately we found no sign of them. Ruins of Nazi symbolism. The concept of ‘Ruinenwert’ was intentionally coined to make architecture aesthetically pleasing even when it collapsed, as it eventually did. By becoming archaeology, it would still be recognisable in the future. Here, a national socialistic sports relief is badly conserved and withered although the symbols of hate can undeniably be identified. However, a new time layer can also be perceived: the sports men are deliberately beheaded and maimed; similar to an iconoclasm.

A memorial to the US soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment who were billeted in Lyme Regis in the run up to the invasion of Normandy. These troops would go on to land in the second wave at Omaha, suffering numerous casualties after finding the earlier assaults still bogged down on the beach and under fierce German fire. Just round the corner is the excellent Mary Anning statue, the pioneering palaeontologist who made many groundbreaking discoveries on the nearby beaches. #archaeology #conflictarchaeology #palaeontology #lymeregis

Bullet impacts on the metal lintel of casemate WN72 overlooking Dog Green sector, Omaha beach. It was from this position that the Germans practically wiped out A Company, 1st Battalion, 116th Infantry of the 29th "Blue & Grey" division, who landed in six LCA's during the first wave at 0630 on 6th June 1944, heading towards the Vierville draw or 'Dog 1' exit. These bullet strikes silently capture a moment of pure desperation as American small arms were directed towards the inhabitants of the bunker in an attempt to stop its murderous fire. The National Guard memorial now sits directly on top of the bunker which still houses the 88mm PAK43 artillery piece which was there on the day. #archaeology #conflictarchaeology #battlefieldarchaeology #secondworldwar #dday #normandy

Nell’ultimo numero di @archeologiaviva (AV 222/2023) è comparso l’interessante articolo “Bradford: aerofotografia e archeologia dei paesaggi”. La caratteristica di questa tecnica d’indagine è la possibilità di individuare ed osservare le tracce della presenza o del passaggio dell’uomo, anche se ancora sepolte nel terreno. In Italia, diversamente che in altri contesti europei dove si è combattuta la Grande Guerra, è ancora oggi possibile osservare dall’alto lo zigzagare delle trincee, poiché scavate per lo più nella roccia. Un caso particolare lo si ritrova però anche in Inghilterra, dove le tracce di un vecchio campo d’addestramento, databile proprio al periodo 1914-1918, sono ancora oggi visibili lungo le coste gallesi presso il paese di Penally. . The Duplex Drive Sherman tanks which could swim ashore were first used on D-Day and were later operated on several battlefields and seems some were sent to India in 1945 and have now been found. This is the major benefit of the “private evidence screening” technique. . Events which happened elsewhere can easily be passed off as having occurred in Israel without people getting the benefit of using basic tools like reverse image search. . People in Israel who seem to be in these dubious WhatsApp and Telegram groups are uncritical and don’t have any evidence screening skills. We aren’t privy to what goes on in them. . People can describe having seen clear evidence of violent acts that… literally come from some other time and place. I wonder if Israelis learn the book 1984? It’s a key text in English language school when teaching about fascism. . When you first learn about the “Ministry of Truth,” you learn their slogans: 1) War is peace. 2) Freedom is slavery. 3) Ignorance is strength. .
