This is a portrait of a young Captain Gilbert Heathcote (1779-1831) of the Royal Navy, wearing a staggering number of brilliant buttons on his jacket. Earlier this month I also finished the military uniform of a Brigadier of the 1st squadron of the French Counter-Guerilla in Mexico, period 1861-1867. The dolman is made from red wool and lined + interlined with linen. The shirt and pants are also made from linen. For the pants I used a very heavy weight antique linen. The sash is made from the same wool as the jacket. The dolman is decorated with thick black brandenbourg cord or braiding and gold round buttons. On the back it's decorated with black tape and thin black cord. Alright I finished all the muslins for the French Counter-Guerilla uniform 1860s. So they are made in a replacement fabric, only to check the fit / pattern. The new owner (not Jasper), came over last week to fit it, and only small adjustments need to be made, no need for new muslins. My oldest impression so far: Norwegian M/1869 overcoat for officers of the artillery and engineer corps. Kepi is of the M/1894 model. Both have rank insignia for a captain. In the late 19th century the Norwegian army had a lot of variations in uniforms from branch to branch, and this overcoat is a prime example of that. These were allowed up until roughly 1910, but likely saw some wear after that. Both the overcoat and kepi are 100 year old originals that somehow fit me. All kit shown was on loan and does not belong to me. She thought her new husband was about the hottest guy EVER, and that's how he looks in this painting. More from the collection's description: "Prince Albert wears the uniform of the 11th Hussars with the ribbon and star of the Garter, the badge of a Grand Cross (Military) of the Order of the Bath and the badge of the Golden Fleece. He rests his hand on his sword and holds his shako which, from 1800 onwards became a common military head-dress in most armies. The building in the background is probably intended to be Windsor Castle. The Prince sat for his portrait during September and October 1840, and Queen Victoria recorded in her Journal that it would be ‘exceedingly like & good’. The portrait was probably the one exhibited by Partridge at the Royal Academy in 1841. On the Queen’s birthday, 24 May 1841, her presents included, from the Prince, ‘a picture of him by Partridge which is very like’. It was placed in her Sitting-Room at Buckingham Palace."
