The 1st meeting of the WHO Symposium on Meaningful Engagement will be held on 15-16 May 2024. Participants are invited to register for the event. In preparation of the 4th High-Level Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of NCDs (4HLM on NCDs) in September 2025, the Global Coordination Mechanism on NCDs (GCM/NCD) has launched the WHO Symposium on Meaningful Engagement of people living with NCDs, mental health, and neurological conditions. Further meetings and activities are planned for later this year and in 2025. TODAY'S FLAG, by Dan and Patricia: The United Nations, marking the eradication of smallpox, certified by the United Nation's World Health Organization May 8, 1980. Small pox was a disease caused by a virus that caused fever and vomiting followed by the malady's characteristic fluid-filled blisters. It killed about 30% of its victims through multiple organ failure. Many survivors were left blind or severely scarred. First evidence of Smallpox dates to around 1500 BC. It historically occurred in regular massive outbreaks. In 18th-century Europe, it is estimated that 400,000 people died from the disease every year. Even in the 20th Century it was estimated to have killed 300 million people. However a systematic international campaign of vaccination and reporting led by the World Health Organization cause dramatic drops in the disease starting in the late 1960s. The last recorded case was in Somalia in 1977. After three years of intense monitoring and verification, the disease was certified as eradicated in 1980. The end of small pox marked the world's most successful vaccination campaign.
