They are at the pointy end of Changing Mindsets. What can parents do to counteract negative attitudes and misperceptions? - Nurturing their child’s language and development so their child can actively participate in family and community life. - Social contact that helps children build relationships and friendships with their peers has been shown to help break down negative stereotypes and promote acceptance. Interestingly, children seem to respond to learning about the similarities between themselves and children with disability rather than the differences, and this is worth keeping in mind when encouraging social contact. - Ignorance can be the root of negative attitudes, and information can help understanding. Parents can pass information about hearing loss in children onto others – building knowledge within their family and community to counteract stigma and misperceptions. - Parent groups help change perceptions within families and communities, providing information to counter ignorance and negative perceptions. Meeting other parents can also offer welcoming emotional and practical support for parents in their day-to-day lives.
