On 22nd and 23rd April 2024, I attended the Conference Titled : "TaxTech: Digital Tech Solutions for Tax Administration", in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. The conference was prepared by World Bank and Ministry of Revenue of Ethiopia. The conference emphasized on Leveraging digitalization to improve tax compliance and revenue mobilization in Africa. Some of the Lesson learned includes but not limited to:- i. Digitalization in Tax administration is necessary to ensure smooth operations of Tax administration activities. ii. Inclusivity should be considered when digital solutions are developed especially here in Africa so as accommodate taxpayers with limited access to modern technology. iii. An International Monterey Fund (IMF) team on Friday reached Pakistan to hold talks regarding the South Asian nation's request for a longer and larger size of bailout package under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF). According to the sources privy to the matter, a support team of the global lender will discuss the first phase of the next long-term loan programme with the country's financial team. Moreover, the sources said that the advance party has reached Pakistan for talks while the IMF mission will arrive on the night of May 16. The federal government has announced plans to secure around $23 billion in external financing to meet monetary requirements for the fiscal year 2024-25. Part of this strategy involves rolling over approximately $12 billion in debts from friendly countries, including $5 billion from Saudi Arabia, $3 billion from the UAE, and $4 billion from China. Additional financing from China, along with new loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and Asian Development Bank, will contribute to the estimated budget. The government aims to achieve budget targets before the anticipated arrival of the IMF review mission in Pakistan, with negotiations for a new loan program expected to begin in mid-May. Sources within the finance ministry revealed that ministries have been directed to meet important targets before negotiations on the new loan program commence. The government plans to have the budget strategy paper approved by the federal cabinet ahead of the IMF review mission's arrival. The Mende are one of the two largest ethnic groups in Sierra Leone, the other being the Temne. Accounting for slightly more than 30% of the country’s total population, the Mende are predominantly found in the southern province and the eastern province. The Mende are descendants of the thirteenth-century Mali empire that migrated from the Sudan to settle in Sierra Leone. Through a variety of means, the Mende assimilated other groups, such as the Sherbro and the Vai, and this continued through the colonial era, as Mende settlements spread. They traditionally live in villages of 70 to 250 residents, which are situated from 1.5 to 5 kilometers apart. The Mende are generally known as growers of rice and several other crops, practicing crop rotation to protect soil productivity. Coffee, cocoa, and ginger are grown as cash crops, whereas rice, pepper, groundnuts, sesame seeds, and palm oil are grown for local consumption. The paramount chief is the principal custodian of all the land in the chiefdom, and is assisted in administering it by elders who are the descendants of the settlers who first cultivated the land.
