QMUL Postgraduate Research Conference A couple of weeks ago, a PGR conference that a fellow QMUL PhD student and I had organised was held in @blocqmul. The whole process of this was really enjoyable and it went very well. The conference was a brilliant opportunity to meet other PhDs in our department, and to hear more about their exciting research. We were so delighted to have Julie Lobalzo Wright as our keynote speaker too! Her paper on Goldie Hawn and Barbra Streisand as Star auteurs was absolutely fabulous! We loved having an Early Career panel with fantastic speakers and advice/tips for us post-PhD too. I absolutely loved presenting on one of my PhD girls, Valerie Hobson too! 🌟 This was the first PGR conference and I hope it continues. I really enjoyed it!
Introducing Great Expectations at the @britishfilminstitute 🎥 I was absolutely thrilled to have been asked to introduce David Lean’s Great Expectations (1946) at the BFI, and to share some of my archival research into Valerie Hobson. 2013 me, a girlie who loved the BFI more than anything, would have lost her mind if she knew that she’d be up there introducing a film one day. I absolutely loved it, and may there be more of these in the future. I was overwhelmed too with the number of people who came along to support and see the gorgeous film up on the big screen. The day was made even more lovely with @_clines, visiting the BIBA and Ken Russell’s The Boy Friend exhibitions at the Fashion and Textile Museum, the best food I’ve ever eaten at Plants of Roselyn, and a visit to Southwark Cathedral ☺️

BAFTSS CONFERENCE 3rd - 5th April I recently went to my first BAFTSS conference to present a paper on Valerie Hobson and examining her labour and agency in fan magazines. I was absolutely delighted to be on a panel with Samar Abdel-Rahman and Christine Geraghty. We weren’t a pre-constituted panel, but our papers complemented each other so well that attendees commented it could have been. I really enjoyed their papers and the numerous other papers I had the opportunity to see during the conference. I had such a brilliant time. I loved reuniting with my fellow #PhDiva @mattweaver_21 for our first conference together, and to be able to meet my fellow BAFTSS LGBTQIA+ SIG convenors @robynollett and @crispyorourke in person. I joined the wine reception, then the Performance and Stardom SIG get together on the first evening too which was fab to meet other Stardom scholars. Then on night two, we had the conference meal which I absolutely loved because the vegan options on that three course meal were absolute 🔥 I cannot wait for the BAFTSS conference next year. I absolutely loved socialising with so many academics I haven’t seen in ages, or met in person for the first time. I missed the conference life so much with the pandemic impacting opportunities to be able to go to them, and BAFTSS was the conference I might wanted to go to - it was worth the wait. Maybe next year I’ll be presenting my final thesis findings there 👀

I am absolutely over the moon to have my first event at the @britishfilminstitute! On Wednesday 17th April at 5:45pm, I’ll be introducing a screening of Great Expectations, talking a little bit about one of my PhD stars, Valerie Hobson. Great Expectations is also my favourite book, and it’s this film adaptation that introduced me to Hobson and made me select her as one of my case studies. I originally wanted to write about Hobson’s stardom by focusing on adaptation and her performance of Estella, but I changed direction. It’s lovely to now be revisiting some of those original strands of thought as I prepare my introduction. I’d love to see some of you there if you can make it. We present the (second) Bride of Frankenstein! Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of Valerie Hobson’s passing. Hobson took over the role of Elizabeth, Henry Frankenstein’s love interest, due to Mae Clarke being ill at the time. The same year of Bride of Frankenstein’s release, she played another bride…this time that of a monster in “Werewolf of London”. I adore both of her performances in Bride of Frankenstein and Werewolf of London and this particular image from the BOF advertising is so stunning and striking.
