PEACHY HUES 🍑 weekend colour challenge number one! That was a baptism by fire, here’s what went well and what didn’t ⬇️ 👎 I should have let you guys pick the colour earlier in the week so I had time to moodboard/research. We ended up being busier than expected this weekend so instead of having time to think it through it definitely felt a little scrabbly. Thank god for the peaches in the fridge! 👍 Despite this I definitely found myself looking differently through my camera lens which is what I wanted! Usually I stick to a tried and true formula for composition, but I definitely played with different framing, cropping, and utilising my fancy new phone’s mega zoom too! What do you think? Make for what you need... There was a time when the biggest obstacle to starting a project was matching the right yarn to the pattern. Texture, fiber, drape, color... each one played a role in forming a perfect union. Hours were spent standing in front of my stash, weighing the options before casting on. Slowly considering each skein and imagining it knit into fabric. Now, there's a whole new set of considerations. "I want some fluffy socks," I said, kneeling in front of the giant, antique cedar chest I picked up and rehabbed from a thrift store specifically to hold my spinning fiber. "Which one of you wants to be a pair of socks?" Braid after braid passed through my hands as I considered the need. Three ply. High twist. Low grist. Strong and stable. Good for hard-wearing items like socks and mittens. I settled on a bundle I'd all but forgotten about — an incredibly kind gift of superwash BFL and nylon from a follower months ago when I first learned to spin. "Well you're just perfect," I thought. Swirls of indigo, slate, and scarlet resting in my hands. Not a fiber base I'd normally pick out for myself but ideal nevertheless. The pleasure of making yarn to match the project — regardless of how rudimentary my knowledge is — lights up all the switchboards in my brain. Little snaps and sparks as the connections are made and the idea comes into focus. In the first photo, our Crafter gently cradles a freshly-spun skein of yarn. Unwound and piled in a nest, the yarn is a three-ply semi-fractal of swirling blues, purples, reds, and white. Drifting in from the hallway, Joni Mitchell sings about the frivolity of a perpetual northern star. A little blue. Quiet. Easy.

Aggressively happy that it’s springtime 🌞 I’ve been having beautiful conversations recently about tenderness and softness and emergence. At my monthly women’s circle yesterday we checked in about how we’re feeling (mind/body/spirit) and the common theme was: We’re good, despite all evidence pointing to the possibility of not being good. We’re happy and thriving and enjoying and we know that sometimes we’re also not. This life is an exercise in contrasts. We can hold two opposing opinions with grace and love and tenderness, instead of with vitriol. When we’re good, let’s own it and share it with the world. The world needs people who are thriving. People who are lit up about what they’re doing. People who have the capacity to feel. We need people who experience the full range of emotions without smooshing some of them down, people who are training themselves to feel very, very tender— even though hardening your edges might be an easier path to choose. We need people who, despite it all, believe in the power of community and connection and one-ness. The questions I’m hearing: -is it okay to be happy, despite the state of the world? (yes) -can I be soft and squishy and go-with-flow, and still “get things done”? (also yes) -should I be feeling guilty or ashamed if life is good and I share about it? (no) -and the ever present theme: what can I do if I’m good and other around me are not? (be. of. service.) Mainly: it’s okay. Being human is hard. Try tenderness and softness and vulnerability and if that feels like too much— go out and spend five minutes with sun on your face. Make it a goal to experience aggressive happiness.
