We’re on Cyclone’s turf now… @twilightofthewarriors These broken stone placards bear the name of a place that lives on in infamy: 九龍寨城 (gau2 lung4 zaai6 sing4 Kowloon Walled City). Here lie the Ghost Signs of the City’s old South Gate (南門 naam4 mun4). Though its history can be traced to a small military outpost that managed the salt trade in the Song dynasty (960-1279), the Kowloon Walled City came to be as a garrison town built by the Qing in 1847 to guard against British expansion after the Treaty of Nanking. That didn’t work and the New Territories were leased to the British under the Treaty of Peking (1887). Nonetheless, the Manchus reserved their authority within the City even as the colony grew around its walls, transforming the place into a no-man’s land. China objected whenever the British proposed to pull it down and the British never applied their municipal regulations to it. The original fortification had six watch towers, 15-foot thick stone walls, a garrison of 500 soldiers and a yamen (衙門 administrative office); Its guns were black with red muzzles. The City was formidable in its day - there are photos of convicted criminals crouched outside the gates with placards round their necks, and decapitated pirates on the nearby beach - Walled City Justice. The British left the City alone hoping it would disappear and, with the fall of the Qing, it almost did. During WWII the Japanese dismantled the walls to extend Kai Tak Airport but, after the war, squatters by the thousand moved into the enclave - out of reach of both the British and Chinese governments. By the late 1980s the City housed some 30,000 people and bore little resemblance to the fortified town of the Manchus. With ungoverned residents left to their own devices, ersatz structures began rising out of the original Walled City until the entire thing was one heaving organism of corrugated metal, concrete and wires. In 1987 the British government announced plans to demolish the Walled City and in 1993 it was dismantled layer by layer until the original parts of the fortress beneath emerged, with our two Ghost Signs telling the story of what came before.
