Hanging Rock State Park - Tory's Den Access This Hanging Rock State Park access features the unique Tory's Den and beautiful Tory's Falls. We consider the hike to both the Den and the Falls to be easy (.2 Miles), but some stairs will need to be navigated to see both. This is a great hike for both beginner and experienced hikers. 🪨 Tory's Den Cave, located in Hanging Rock State Park in North Carolina, is a site steeped in natural beauty and historical lore. This small sandstone cave was reputedly a hideout for Loyalists, or Tories, during the American Revolutionary War, giving it its name. The cave's secluded position amidst the lush forests and rugged terrain of the Sauratown Mountains made it an ideal refuge. Today, Tory's Den attracts hikers and history enthusiasts alike, offering a glimpse into the region's past and the captivating landscape that has remained largely untouched. Visitors to the cave can enjoy the picturesque trails leading to the den, which provide an immersive experience in the park's rich biodiversity and striking geological formations. 💧 Tory's Falls, located within the scenic Hanging Rock State Park in North Carolina, is a stunning waterfall that offers visitors a picturesque natural retreat. This waterfall, cascading gracefully over a rugged cliff face, is named in conjunction with Tory's Den (described above). The falls are accessible via a short yet invigorating hike through the lush woodlands of the park, where visitors can immerse themselves in the serene beauty of the Sauratown Mountains. The sound of the water crashing down into the pool below, surrounded by verdant foliage and diverse wildlife, creates a tranquil atmosphere ideal for nature lovers and photographers. Tory's Falls, with its blend of historical significance and natural splendor, is a must-see destination for those exploring Hanging Rock State Park. https://thesociableadventurer.com/torys-den-cave-waterfall/

For years, HWF focused on the exteriors of historic places when recognizing extraordinary local projects with our annual Preservation Awards. This year, we added a new accolade to the list: Interior Preservation. Now, we can applaud the people who honor the historic integrity of properties, inside and out. And boy, is the inaugural award-winner worthy of applause! 🏆 WARREN HOUSE (520 NUN STREET) This National Folk-style house was rehabilitated through a partnership between Trey Lewis of @lewis_coastal_homes and Shane Horan of @snscustomhomes. The original spatial relationships of the house’s interior were preserved by maintaining the floor plan, with rooms separated by eight-foot-high pocket doors restored to operable condition. Distinctive finishes—trim, door hardware, mantels, and even the original clawfoot tubs—were salvaged and re-installed. Today, the Warren House interior is preserved as an early 20th-century house with non-invasive nods to modern living. What a stunner! We’re back on Friday with a look at the 2024 Rehabilitation winners! Can’t wait until then? Visit historicwilmington.org/2024-preservation-awards for more information on this year’s awards. #OnThisDay in 1846, Josiah Collins III paid $55.75 to H. W. Collins – likely his brother Hugh Williamson Collins – for “apprehending” Austin Hathaway and Solomon Collins (2nd 📸). The two enslaved men sought their freedom from Somerset Place in April, making it across the Albemarle Sound to Edenton (1st 📸) before they were captured and forcibly returned to Somerset. It’s unknown how they were punished for their resistance, but by June 1847 Austin had passed away. Solomon, however, lived to see emancipation with his wife Peggy and four of their ten children. With freedom in hand, Solomon and Peggy left Somerset Place and were living in Edenton by 1867. 2nd 📸 courtesy of @nc_archives_photos . . . . . . . . . . . #SomersetPlaceSHS #NCHistoricSites #NCCulture #ExploreNC #ExploreCarolina #CarolinaOnMyMind #HistoryMatters #ThisPlaceMatters #AfricanAmericanHistory #BlackHistory #Plantation #Slavery #TellTheFullStory #EasternNC #NCHistory

Happy National Waitstaff Day! Waitstaff make or break the dining out experience. Your food could be amazing, but if the service isn’t, you probably won‘t be satisfied with the meal. May 21st is National Waitstaff Day and today we are going to take a look at the Pullman Porters. Pullman Porters not only worked the Sleeping Cars, they also worked the Dining Cars. Pullman Porters were the face of the company. In the promotional poster in this post, the front cover places the Porter just shy of the center. The passenger comes first, front and center, but the Porter who cares for the passenger and is the selling point of the Pullman Experience, is right there. Pullman Porters worked in the Sleeping Cars and in the Dining Cars, taking care of the entire customer experience while the train was in motion. In the Dining Car, they took orders and served drinks. The customer wrote their order down to prevent mistakes, and the Porters ensured it was fulfilled. Porters kept a manual, “Drinks,” by Jacques Straub, listing over 700 popular drinks, so that any cocktail ordered could be speedily made. Tipping in the US started with Pullman Porters as a recognition of good service and a way to ensure good service. Not only were Pullman Porters expected to provide perfect service to passengers they were also required to enforce segregation on the cars and uphold racist policies. Good service during segregation meant keeping spaces white, with white passengers being prioritized over others. Salute to the North Carolinians who fought in the War for Southern Independence. 🫡👏 My ancestors Daniel Burney, Elijah Creech, James Creech, Joel Britt, and many more enlisted in Wilmington, North Carolina, in 1862. Daniel Burney fought for the 51st NC Infantry and died at Elmira, NY Prison. Joel Britt fought for the 51st as well. I haven't located his burial location yet. I hope to do so soon! Elijah Creech served in the Railroad Guards in Wilmington. He survived the war and came back home to live his life out. James Creech. I believe, served in the 33rd NC. Haven't located a burial location for him yet. Will update everyone when I find more information. “I’ve never been a millionaire, but I know I’d be just darling at it.” Dorthy Parker (and probably John Reed) . What better way to spend #NationalBeAMillionaireDay than by learning the story of John Reed, an almost millionaire? . John Reed had a true rags-to-riches story. He was the illegitimate child of a farmer and enlisted in the Hessian militia as a teen, likely in hopes of improving his station. After serving with the British during the American Revolution, Reed deserted and fled to North Carolina where he married Sarah “Sally” Kiser. She had inherited a respectable part of her late father’s estate, which helped them establish a small farm and provide for their family until their fortune changed when one of their sons discovered a 17 pound gold nugget on their property. After that, the entire Reed family began searching for gold and amassed a fortune. By the time of his death in 1845, John Reed was *almost* a millionaire in today’s money, but not quite. He was about $9,000 short of the title. . . . #ReedGoldMine #NCHistoricSites #NCHistory #NorthCarolinaHistory #DorothyParker #JohnReed

These bricks are unique due to the marks left on them by the enslaved who made the bricks. We are almost certain that these are fingerprints. The bricks tell a story of who was in the area and the need for lodging and dining during the first two decades of the nineteenth century. The Union Tavern was constructed in 1818. The property was bought in 1827 by Thomas Day from George Farley for $500 in cash. Today, May 20th, 2024, marks the 249th anniversary of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. This document claims to be the first declaration of independence from Britain by the American colonies, pre-dating the national Declaration by over a year. . Celebrated in Charlotte, North Carolina, as "Meck Dec Day," its authenticity is debated by historians. While the document itself surfaced much later, the anniversary is a chance to remember North Carolina's role in the American Revolution, even if the Mecklenburg Declaration's legitimacy remains unclear. . Indeed, May 20, 1775 appears on the North Carolina state flag as a testament to the state's spirit of independence. On this day in North Carolina history, Hank Snow’s All Star Jamboree tour, featuring a new young talent named Elvis Presley, ended at Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh. It marked the beginning of the end of the touring relationship between the headliner, Faron Young, and featured player Presley. Before intermission, each show included a new talent portion in which Presley took the stage, with the headliners performing after intermission. In the early days of the tour Colonel Tom Parker, as booking agent, actually paid teenagers $5 apiece to scream for Presley. He used the publicity photographs to send to the newspapers in the next cities on the tour. Young later recounted that each night of the tour Elvis got bigger and wilder crowds. As the tour progressed, fans began to shout for more Elvis during the other performances, and he was called back for encore after encore. Other performers on the tour recalled how much they discounted Presley and his odd onstage behavior. Most country singers thought that he was a fad who would quickly fade, but Presley soon found himself the headliner, and few established stars would agree to perform with him on a tour. #nchistory #raleigh #elvispresley #onthisday #musichistory

On this day in May 1864, I ran from the residence of farmer T. A. Yount near the Catawba railroad station in western North Carolina. I might have followed the railroad tracks or hopped a train towards Charlotte, or tried going all the way back home to my family in Columbus, SC, 130 miles to the south. I was 17 years old. I was called JOHN. #civilwar #NChistory #NorthCarolina #slavery #freedomseekers #selfemancipation #blackhistory #UShistory

My 3rd Great Grandfather William (Billy) Felix Howell was born on May 16, 1826 possibly in Grayson County, Virginia to Amos Howell and Rhoda Edwards Howell.  He had the following siblings:  Martha J. (1821), Margaret Peggy (1823), Olive (1830), Mary (1832), David (1836), Lucinda Lindsey (1842), and Sutton/Sultane Selina (1845).  A book called “Ash County’s Civil War:  Community and Society in the Appalachian South” states that a girl named Selina Howell took her own life at age 13 by hanging herself in her family’s barn.  The only record of her is the 1850 Census showing her at 5 years old living with her parents and siblings, Olive, David, and Lindsey.  In about 1847, William married Celia Halsey, and they made their home in Ashe County, NC.  In 1850, William and Celia were in their early 20s living and farming in Ashe County, NC with two children, Wiley Wesley (1848) (2 years) and Mary Polly (infant).   In 1860, William and Celia were in their 30s living and farming in North Fork, Ashe County, NC with their children, Wiley (12 years), Mary Polly (10 years), Amos (1851) (8 years), Rhoda (1856) (6 years), Felix (1856) (4 years), and Sarah (1858) (2 years).  A sweet baby girl named Martha was born in October 1860 and only lived a short time when she died from scarlet fever on October 9, 1860.  In 1870, William and Celia were in their 40s living on their farm in Oldfields, Ashe County, NC with their children, Amos (18 years), Rhoda (17 years), Felix (14 years), and Sarah (11 years).  Their son, Amos, died on September 6, 1873 at 21 years old although no records have been found to determine how he died.  In 1880, William and Celia were in their 50s still living on the farm in Oldfields with one daughter, Sarah (22 years).  His wife, Celia, died July 16, 1897.  In 1900, William was widowed living alone at 74 years old on their farm in Oldfields.  William died October 8, 1905 and is buried in Howell Cemetery in Todd, NC.  William’s estate was probated October 22, 1905 by his sons, Wiley and Felix. #ncfamily #nchistory #southernhistory #ashecountync

Another cool spot to get some steps in is Romare Bearden Park ... This park is named for Charlotte-born artist, Romare Bearden, who was “recognized as one of the most creative & original visual artists of the 20th century ...” ~ Park Kiosk “Richard Hunt created ‘Spiral Odyssey’ as a tribute to his friend, Romare Bearden ... Bearden & Hunt were the first contemporary African American artists to have solo exhibitions at New York’s Museum of Modern Art in 1971 ... In 1963, Romare Bearden played a pivotal role in the founding of a collective of African American artists known as the ‘Spiral Group’ who actively participated in the Civil Rights movement. In the manner of the Archimedean spiral that advances by radiating outward to embrace all directions, the elegant spiral formed by Richard Hunt’s sculpture symbolizes the widening influence of the Spiral Group. It also represents the circular nature of progress and the complexities of Bearden’s multifaceted career, which even in its legacy continues to ascend” ~ Spiral Odyssey Kiosk 🌱 Romare Bearden Park 📍 300 S Church St, Charlotte, NC 28202 #TrailsAreEverywhere #EveningWalk #History #NCHistory #CharlotteNC #CLT #NC #NorthCarolina #MecklenburgCounty #PublicArt

Did you know that there were 30 African American newspapers in North Carolina in the late 1800s? As more and more African Americans became literate after emancipation, newspapers were founded that addressed topics important to African American communities, from politics to arts and culture. DigitalNC’s exhibit, "African-American Newspapers in North Carolina," provides an excellent database for searching through these newspapers and learning about Black culture in our state. 253 years ago today, Col. Robert Palmer of Bath was with Gov. William Tryon of North Carolina at the Battle of Alamance, helping to put down the Regulators. The Regulator Movement was rebelling against what they viewed as the corrupt and unfair practices of the Colonial Government under Tryon. Robert Palmer, a prominent resident of Bath and Colonel of Beaufort militia, led forces to aid Governor Tryon. The Governor eventually made him his aid de camp. After the battle, Palmer was one of those who urged Governor Tryon to issue a general pardon to all Regulators who laid down their arms and took oaths of allegiance. . . . #historicbath_nc #nchistoricsites #nchistoricbath #nchistory #historicbathsite #historicbath #historicbathnc #alamancenc #alamancebattleground #regulators #nchistory

#OnThisDay in 1771, the Battle of Alamance was fought near Alamance Creek in what was then Orange County. The battle was the culmination of a rebellion by residents of the state's backcountry who believed that royal government officials were charging them excessive fees, falsifying records, and engaging in other mistreatments. These individuals called themselves Regulators in reference to their desire to regulate their own affairs. As the rebellion turned to increasingly violent measures to achieve their goals, Governor Tryon called up the militia and marched west from New Bern in order to subdue the uprising. About 2,000 Regulators, armed with old muskets and makeshift weapons, organized near Tryon’s camp of 1,100 militia men along Alamance Creek. Messages were exchanged, with the governor demanding immediate and complete surrender of the Regulators and the Regulators petitioning the Governor for reforms. Nothing came of the negotiations and, on the morning of May 16, Tryon ordered his forces to march. Though greater in number, the Regulators, who did not have a true commander or sufficient ammunition for a lengthy engagement, were no match for Tryon's militia and artillery, which included two field pieces and four swivel guns. Tryon reported 9 militiamen killed and 61 wounded. Regulator casualties were more numerous: estimates range from 9 killed and an undetermined number wounded to as high as 300 killed and wounded. Tryon took 15 prisoners, one of whom was hanged on the battlefield that evening. In trials at Hillsborough, 12 Regulators were found guilty of treason; 6 of these were executed and the others pardoned. · · · #history #museum #historymuseum #nchistory #historichillsborough #hillsboroughnc #visithillsboroughnc

On May 15th, 1864, I ran from the premises of barkeeper and slave trader Jack Hall in Salisbury, NC, intending to go back to my family at Dr. R H Morrison’s Cottage Home Plantation in Lincoln County, about 50 miles west. Dr. Morrison had given me and several others to his new son-in-law Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson in 1859, but he sold me shortly afterward to Dr. Edward L Carrington, who sold me to Hall. Hall was still advertising for me in June 1864. My name was HARVEY. #freedomseekers #slavery #selfemancipation #NorthCarolina #NChistory #blackhistory #UShistory

Like all the tangible treasures of this world, old buildings require tending. Without the care of committed custodians, we risk losing these sites of our shared past to the march of time and the drumbeat of progress. Luckily, our community is rich with people ready to come to the rescue! This month, HWF is honored to highlight the work of local preservationists doing just that with our annual Preservation Awards. These folks pour their time, energy, and resources into storied spaces, ensuring they’re saved for future generations. Celebrating their contributions is the least we can do! Join us tomorrow, Thursday, May 16, for the 2024 Preservation Awards Ceremony at the historic New Hanover County Courthouse (6-7:30pm) as we toast their triumphs!
