Thank you for the feature @humanities_tn We greatly appreciate it. If in middle Tennessee, make sure check out the exhibit at the @crhm_dickson. Stay tuned 👀for where it will be next ❗️ “For Murphy, this exhibit is personal. He knew that his great-grandfather was employed at Cumberland Furnace, but it wasn’t until doing archival research that he discovered that he is a descendant of enslaved iron workers. In 2021, Murphy and another descendant of their shared ancestor Ferdinand Jackson went to the plantation in Alabama where he was enslaved. Two years later, Murphy was looking through the “Negro Book” from Louisa Furnace in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and found Jackson listed. He had been leased from the Alabama plantation to the Tennessee iron furnace for thirty years. “ #ironfurnace #history #historybeforeus #historymatters #historylovers #enslavement #ancestors #descendants #sharestories #historylesson #historic #tennessee
Today we filmed in our home base of #charlottenc Che’ Abdullah provided us history and the preservation/clean up efforts at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. About the site ⬇️ History of the Cedar Grove Cemetery “More than 67 acres of land once made up a tract of land that began at Beatties Ford Road and covered an area that now has homes and an elementary school. Once planned as a large African American cemetery, the land was apportioned to developers and the city of Charlotte over the last 100 years. All that remains of the once beautiful cemetery is around 1.8 acres of land with an unknown number of graves. People still visit the graves, leaving small gifts, tokens, and flowers. Veterans have flags placed on their graves on the appropriate holidays. Yet, other than these simple gestures, the cemetery has fallen into disrepair and neglect since the last known owner and caretaker, John S. Davidson, passed away in 1972. Mr. Davidson is buried there and may well be one of the last people interred on the property. Working with three siblings and forming the Davidson Bros. Funeral Services company, John Shead outlived his brothers passing away at the age of 100. He was the sole person responsible for the land, and his immediate relatives have long passed on. The cemetery is now abandoned, and something meaningful is happening on the site. The purpose of “Save Cedar Grove” is to finally put forth a project that can bring the space back to a place of peace and pride for the community and those who rest within it.” #history #hometownchroniclesusa #historybeforeus #historylovers #historymatters #queencity #charlotte #northcarolina #nchistoricsites #cemetery #704

Found an old wallet with Dr. Patton’s card in it. Mr. Patton was very personable and loved to discuss his experience during the Freedom Rides. Rest well my friend 🕊️ Via @tennesseannews ⬇️ Patton ran from storefronts to pay phones, calling in every arrest of his fellow protesters to First Baptist Capitol Hill church where demonstrations were being coordinated. Those at the church would send in more students to refill the counters. He was one of the 3,000 college students who marched to the Nashville courthouse steps in 1960 in a silent, nonviolent protest after the bombing of a Black civil rights attorney’s home. At 21, Patton also took part in the 1961 Freedom Ride to Jackson, Miss., on a Greyhound bus and was arrested upon arrival. According to the Freedom Rides Museum, Patton left Nashville without telling his mother, who found out when a family friend saw images of his arrest on television. After his arrest, he was one of 14 students expelled from Tennessee State University for participation in the Freedom Rides. Although he never finished his degree at TSU, Patton pursued a jazz music career and continued sharing his story and advocating on behalf of civil rights in Nashville and beyond. He and the other students eventually were awarded honorary doctorate degrees by TSU, according to the museum.” #history #historybeforeus #freedomriders #civilrights
Today my great x 2 grandmother Liddy Ann Ferguson Pettus passed away. Her attending physician 🩺👨🏾⚕️was Dr. Robert Tecumseh Burt (pictured). She was born in 1834 and passed on April 23, 1911. More about Dr. Burt ⬇️ Robert Tecumseh Burt was born the son of freed slaves in Mississippi in 1873. As a young man, he taught in schools in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, but he later returned to college to further his education. In 1893, he began attending Meharry Medical College in Nashville, where he graduated with honors in 1897. After completing his medical courses, Burt opened his first office in McMinnville, Tennessee. In 1904, he relocated to Clarksville to set up his medical practice on Third Street. In the beginning of his career, he only served members of the African American community, but in time he opened his practice to patients of all races, offering his expertise as a physician and cutting-edge surgeon to anyone in need of medical assistance. Shortly after opening his practice Burt made his mark on history by opening Clarksville’s first hospital: The Home Infirmary near what is now Riverside Drive. The doors to the hospital opened on March 6, 1906, and it was Clarksville’s first and only hospital for 12 years. The Home Infirmary was recognized by the National Medical Association and operated for more than 40 years. During his time as a practicing physician, he performed between 300-400 procedures every year for his community. He held tonsil clinics for needy children and was performing C-sections years before they were common medical practice. Before there was a hospital on Fort Campbell, he also treated the obstetric patients of military families. Burt operated his hospital until the Clarksville Memorial Hospital opened in 1954, just one year before he died. It was founded immediately after emancipation and incorporated in 1873. The Rev. Philip Morris was its first pastor.
