#OTD in 1961, Nashville Student Movement #FreedomRiders arrived back in Birmingham, AL. The night before, Eugene “Bull” Connor had taken them out of their cells in the middle of the night stating that he was driving them back to Nashville. What followed was a tense hours-long car ride. The silence was broken by #FreedomRider Catherine Burks-Brooks who had the misfortune to be seated in the front alongside Bull Connor. No stranger to uncomfortable situations, Burks-Brooks struck up a conversation with “the Bull” as she referred to him. They chatted for several hours before she invited him to her mother’s house for a meal. The caravan stopped in the early hours of the morning near the Tennessee line where the Riders were promptly thrown out near the train tracks. After following the tracks, the Riders came across several homes on either side. They took a gamble and knocked on the door of the poorest looking home in the hopes that the occupants would be an African-American family willing to give them shelter. They knocked, explained who they were, and were told to go away. Burks-Brooks suggested they knock again and ask for the woman of the house. They were told to come inside and given breakfast. When they were dropped off near the train tracks, Burks-Brooks told Bull Connor that they would be back in Birmingham by noon. She was only off by two hours. The image seen here is of Burks-Brooks after her arrest in Jackson, MS for participation in the Freedom Rides.

#OTD in 1961, the Nashville Student Movement #FreedomRiders spent a day in the segregated Birmingham city jail, and lost one of their number. Salynn McCollum, a twenty-one-year-old native New Yorker attending Peabody College in Nashville, was released into her father’s custody after her arrest in Birmingham. Furious at her participation in the Ride, her father dragged her back home to New York. Undeterred, she returned to the South to remain active in the movement and participated in another Freedom Ride later that year. The image seen here is of McCollum during her time with the Nashville Student Movement. Image of Salynn McCollum courtesy of Danny Lyon/Magnum Photos.

Happy Birthday to #FreedomRides strategist Diane Nash! Diane Nash did not board a transport herself, but she was a very important asset to the Rides. After the CORE sponsored #FreedomRiders were unable to continue due to the violence that happened in Alabama, Nash was determined to send a new group to pick up where they left off. Instead of actually getting on the bus, other members of the group elected her to coordinate the Rides. After much communication and planning, Nash launched the first group of student Riders from Nashville a few days after the CORE Riders had been attacked. She would continue to coordinate Rides throughout the summer of 1961. Though she had a major role with the Freedom Rides, it was not her first involvement as a Civil Rights activist. She had participated in sit-ins, nonviolence training and continued to be involved after the Freedom Rides. Though she was arrested multiple times, like other notable activists, she did not let that stop her. In 2022, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her lifelong commitment to fighting for justice and equality. The image seen here shows Nash leading a march to city hall during the Nashville Student Movement. Image courtesy of the Nashville Tennessean.

#OTD in 1961: #FreedomRiders traveled through the South, using their First Amendment freedoms to challenge segregation on buses and in bus stations. Outside of Anniston, Alabama, the riders were met by an angry mob armed with lead pipes, chains and clubs. The mob attacked the riders, kicking and beating them and firebombing the bus. The riders offered nonviolent resistance using techniques they were taught before departing. A few hours later, a second group of riders arrived in Birmingham, Alabama, where they were also attacked. A journalist photographed the violence before he, too, was severely beaten and his camera smashed. His film survived, and the photographs provoked public outcry. Two weeks later, President John F. Kennedy announced that the Interstate Commerce Commission would ban segregation in all the facilities under its jurisdiction, not just buses. However, the Freedom Rides and resistance continued.

Birmingham Trailways Station, Mother's Day, May 14th, 1961 - #OTD the original Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) sponsored #FreedomRide came to a tragic and violent end. Disregarding Dr. King’s warnings of imminent danger and Klan activity awaiting them in Alabama, the Riders departed Atlanta on two separate buses, one Greyhound and one Trailways, and ventured into Alabama. For those on the Trailways bus, the violence started shortly after they left Atlanta. Unbeknownst to the #FreedomRiders aboard, some Klansmen were among the passengers with them on the bus. As the bus left Atlanta heading toward Alabama, the Klansmen began to terrorize the Freedom Riders and started beating two of the Black Riders who were sitting towards the front of the bus. Fellow Riders Jim Peck and Walter Bergman stepped in to aid their friends and were also beaten and forced to the back of the bus. When the bus arrived in Birmingham, a mob of angry Klansmen greeted the already battered Freedom Riders. Despite already being bruised and bloody, Charles Person and Jim Peck led the challenge of the segregated waiting room. The Riders were brutally beaten again this time by a mob as police presence was purposely absent for 15 minutes. While no one died during this incident or the bus burning in Anniston, AL, several Riders suffered severe injuries and the original group of Freedom Riders was forced to conclude their Ride with a chartered plane ride to New Orleans arranged by John Seigenthaler, aide to U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. The Freedom Rides seemed to be at an end after suffering beatings by violent segregationists in Alabama, but a group of courageous college students in Nashville, TN had other plans. The image scene here shows Klansman brutally beating a passenger who they believed to be a Freedom Rider, but who was actually a newlywed on his way to his honeymoon. During the violence of the Rides, many bystanders would be injured.

In 1961, the Congress of Racial Equality organized the Freedom Rides as a way test the new Supreme Court decision Boynton v. Virginia, which declared that segregating interstate travel was unconstitutional. The Freedom Riders traveled from Washington, DC to Alabama and Mississippi, where they were met with violence. Among them was John Lewis, who would go on to represent Georgia's 5th District for many years. From May 12th to 13th, they passed through Georgia and visited with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The above image is of the mugshots of some of the Freedom Riders, and it originates from the Exhibit on Freedom Riders at the Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, GA; the image has been resized and cropped. #atlanta #georgia #atlanticstation #history #georgiahistory #museum #blackhistory #freedomriders #MLK

The Freedom Riders were a group of civil rights activists who in 1961 challenged Southern segregation laws by riding interstate buses. On this day, 1961, in Anniston, Alabama, one of these buses was violently attacked by a white mob that slashed the tires, set the bus on fire, and beat the riders as they escaped. This brutal event highlighted the severe resistance to racial equality and prompted increased federal action to protect civil rights. The Freedom Riders National Monument in Anniston commemorates this pivotal moment and honors the courage of those who risked their lives for justice. In early May, 1961, a small interracial group of mostly college students left Washington D.C. on two buses, a Trailways and a Greyhound bus, to test the Supreme Court decisions that prohibited segregation on interstate travel. On May 14, the Freedom Riders were attacked by angry protesters in Anniston, Alabama. The Greyhound Bus was firebombed just outside of town and protesters tried to prevent riders getting off the burning bus, then beat the riders when they were able to escape. This first failed ride inspired hundreds of others, and eventually moved the Interstate Commerce Commission to ban segregation on interstate busses and stations. Today, the recently established @freedom_riders_nps is working to develop a National Park that will preserve historic sites in Anniston and continue to tell the story of these brave Civil Rights activists. #FindYourPark #FreedomRiders #freedomridersnationalmonument #civilrights #civilrightsmovement #lego #legoparkranger #legoranger #legostagram #legophotography #legominifigures

#OTD in 1961, the original Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) sponsored #FreedomRide came to a tragic and violent end. Disregarding Dr. King’s warnings of imminent danger and Klan activity awaiting them in Alabama, the Riders departed Atlanta on two separate buses, one Greyhound and one Trailways, and ventured into Alabama. Although they now expected some violence, they were still unprepared for the hatred and brutality they would encounter. Upon arrival at the Greyhound station in Anniston, AL, those on the first bus were greeted by an angry mob who surrounded the bus and began to shake it and beat the sides with tire irons and bats. The driver was able to leave the station and continue on toward Birmingham, AL, unaware that the mob had slashed the bus tires. The bus rolled to a stop just a few miles outside of town with members of the mob following behind. The mob descended upon the bus, weapons in hand, and broke several windows. As the #FreedomRiders looked on in horror, several homemade fire bombs were thrown into the broken windows, immediately filling the cabin with thick black smoke. The Freedom Riders and other passengers quickly learned that their only exit was being held closed by the mob. As some chanted “Burn them alive!” there seemed to be no escape. Suddenly, a fuel line exploded, scaring away the mob long enough for all to get off the bus. Those on the Trailways bus were unaware of the fate of their fellow Riders or what awaited them in Birmingham... The image seen here is of the infamous bus burning in Anniston, AL. Freedom Riders can be seen in the foreground.

It's #FreedomRiderFriday! Today we will be featuring Reverend Benjamin Elton Cox. Twenty-nine-year old Rev. Benjamin Elton Cox was one of the original CORE riders. He was a minister and former youth secretary for the NAACP. Before the #FreedomRides, he was already an activist for civil rights and conducted nonviolence training for sit-ins. He was on two Rides. On his second Ride, he led a group of five #FreedomRiders. This group was arrested in Little Rock, AR for attempting to use the whites only waiting room of a segregated bus station. This time, rather than a mob attack, he and his fellow Riders faced arrest and trial. After their conviction, the judge offered them a choice: Leave Arkansas the way that they had come, or spend six months in jail. The Freedom Riders chose jail, but were released after only three days, when mounting public pressure forced Arkansas authorities to acknowledge that their detainment was not legal. The Freedom Riders had won another victory in the fight against segregation. After the Rides, he continued advocating for civil rights, being arrested 38 times. He was a chaplain in VA Hospital in Urbana, IL. He later became a middle school counselor in Jackson, TN before he retired. We will forever remember Rev. Benjamin Elton Cox as he was one of the many Freedom Riders who took the courageous steps toward freedom. The image seen here is Cox during the first portion of the CORE Ride.

#tbt to May 4, 1961 — Virginia played a crucial role in the Freedom Rides, challenging segregation in bus terminals nationwide. Inspired by the Boynton v. Virginia Supreme Court ruling, 13 individuals embarked on a journey from Washington, D.C., to New Orleans, defying segregation laws. Arriving in Richmond, they boldly patronized both black and white cafeterias, sparking curiosity and highlighting the power of peaceful protest. Their bravery remains a timeless reminder of the ongoing fight for equality. Photo 1: The First 'Freedom Riders' Holding Suitcases Outside Office Of Attorney S.W. Robinson. Wind Therapy Ride. JP finds that riding a bicycle in strong wind can be both exhilarating and challenging. Sixty three years ago, 13 Freedom Riders left Washington for New Orleans, protesting segregation in public transportation. I created this piece for the Freedom Riders National Monument, to commemorate their historic stand for justice and equality. #FreedomRiders #JusticeForAll 🇺🇞 #GoodTrouble #StandAgainstHate

Teaching courage, standing for justice. Filming interviews and spending time with John Dolan, one of the Freedom Riders
Freedom Riders were groups of white and African American civil rights activists who participated in Freedom Rides, bus trips through the American South in 1961 to protest segregated bus terminals. Freedom Riders tried to use “whites-only” restrooms and lunch counters at bus stations in Alabama, South Carolina and other Southern states. The groups were confronted by arresting police officers—as well as horrific violence from white protestors—along their routes, but also drew international attention to the civil rights movement. Without these brave souls where would we be? #GoodTrouble RP "You couldn't talk about daily life in the Jim Crow south without mentioning segregation. Much like you can't speak of civil rights without mentioning the #FreedomRiders. Regardless of your views on integration, the strength and determination of the freedom riders, like many other activists of the time, is undeniable. From their start on this day in 1961 through November, when segregation on transportation was finally deemed illegal, these freedom-fighters marched on and not only sparked legislative change that would impact the lives of Black folks nationwide but also empowered generations to come. #PushBlack #TodayInBlackHistory" –––– Follow @wearepushblack for more daily #BlackHistory ✊🏿 . . . . #BlackPower #BlackHistoryDaily #JimCrow #JohnLewis #GoodTrouble #BlackPride #BlackExcellence #BlackHistory365 #BlackHistoryisEveryday #BlackHistory365 #BlackPolitics #ShareBlackStories   #BlackPeople #blackhistoryfacts

May 4, 1961: The first Freedom Ride protest against segregation of interstate bus travel in the South began, with activists boarding a trip from Washington, D.C. to New Orleans. At stops along the way, white riders would use facilities intended for black individuals and vice versa. The Freedom Riders were met with violence in Anniston and Birmingham, Alabama, with buses firebombed and their tires slashed. On May 29, President Kennedy ordered the Interstate Commerce Commission to enforce bans on segregation in their vehicles, though the protests continued until his dictate became effective in September. #freedomriders #onthisday

HAPPY 29th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY @thekirkbovill!!! (Swipe left for 2nd pic) It’s been a wild ride! Let’s re-fuel and buckle up for the next leg of our journey together! Just being us
leaning on each other (& Jesus). Ironically, we didn’t even realize it back in 1995 that on this same day in 1961, the original group of Freedom Riders (seven black and six white) boarded buses headed south to protest segregation. I’m getting emotional right now just thinking of the irony—us sharing the anniversary of such a brave group who fought for unity in diversity. Here we are representing that unity! I only hope we can inspire not only married couples to keep going when it gets tough, but people in general to stand for justice and to love everyone, including those who don’t look like you. It just might turn into a lifelong relationship.😁🌍❣ May the Fourth Be With You!!! Thank you @thekirkbovill for being my life partner and always standing for liberty and justice for ALL. Just one of the reasons why I love you. #marriedlife #lovewins #weddinganniversary❀ #interracialmarriages #freedomriders #ebonyandivory #loveallpeople #racialreconciliation #nebraskaboymississippigirl

On this day in 1961, The first Freedom Ride departed from D.C. Organized by CORE, 13 interracial riders embarked on a trip to N.O. to challenge segregation in interstate terminals. They planned to arrive on the anniversary of Brown v. Board. However, Their buses were fire bombed and riders were beaten by a white mob in Alabama. The incident drew national attention and the freedom rides continued until the fall 1961, the ICC prohibit segregation in interstate transit terminals. #blackhistory #freedomriders #history

On this day in history, the Freedom Rides, initiated by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), embarked on a pioneering journey that would mark a significant chapter in the Civil Rights Movement. Starting on May 4, 1961, these rides aimed to challenge the segregation laws in the Southern United States, which remained intransigent despite Supreme Court rulings that declared segregated public buses unconstitutional. A diverse group of volunteers, both black and white, boarded buses to travel through the South, risking their lives to expose and oppose racial injustices. Their journey was met with violent resistance, notably in Anniston, Alabama, where one of the buses was firebombed, and in Birmingham, where riders were brutally attacked. Despite these challenges, the Freedom Riders' courage and determination ultimately led to the Interstate Commerce Commission enforcing stricter desegregation policies in bus terminals across America, marking a pivotal moment in the fight for civil rights and equality. #AAHM #museum #OnThisDay #history #FreedomRide #freedomriders #civilrights #AfricanAmericanHistory #is #americanhistory

The group was often confronted by police officers, bystanders, and violent counter-protest mobs.
