With so many diets out there, it can be hard to choose one that works for you. Sometimes it takes trial and error and figuring out what makes you feel best. A good starting place that will help you realize other shifts to take, is to just focus on adequate macros when it comes to protein, water, and fiber. For protein, you typically want to consume: 0.8-1gram per kg of bodyweight. For some they may need MUCH more than that . A good benchmark is to aim for 30 grams per meal. Keep in mind that your body can’t actually absorb more than 40 grams at a time, so there is no use in shoveling it in. For fiber, between 20-30 grams is recommended. The standard American diet does not even reach 10 grams a day. Having enough fiber means your body can flush out toxins and excrement. Hydration is so important. Oftentimes, dehydration is the catalyst for many other health issues. Focus on about 1⁄2 your bodyweight, in ounces, for how much water to consume. Women going through menopause are more likely to develop an underactive thyroid than an overactive thyroid. The risk of developing an underactive thyroid increases with age, and is about 10 times more common in women than men. It’s estimated that 12–20% of women over the age of 60 may have an underactive thyroid. BUT….most traditional doctors don’t run the proper tests. Se second slide for recommended tests. AND, they often only prescribe T4 T3 is the active thyroid hormone and it’s needed for many wonderful things like generating heat, growing hair, making energy and brain function. Yet most thyroid medications only contain the less active hormone T4 that needs to be converted to T3 in the body. Not everyone converts properly and there are things that we can do to optimize conversion. We can also take T3 directly! If you are taking a thyroid medication like Synthroid (levothyroxine)? Levothyroxine contains T4, the less-active but longer-acting thyroid hormone. The T4 molecule is considered a pro-hormone, as it is less physiologically active than T3 and needs to be converted to T3, the more active thyroid hormone, by our bodies.� The conversion from T4 to T3 can be impeded by numerous factors, including nutrient deficiencies, iodine excess, and impaired liver and gut activity. (These are all common root causes of Hashimoto’s symptoms!)�Stress is another common cause of low T4 to T3 In some cases where a lot of reverse T3 is produced and a person is lacking in T4 hormone, opting for a thyroid medication that contains T3 may help ensure that the right hormone is getting to the right receptors. It’s not enough to go to your doctor and ask to test thyroid hormones and have them tell you everything looks good. I had a recent follower send me a message asking me to talk more about hormones. I must admit I know a lot about hormones but breaking down that knowledge into posts has been more overwhelming than I thought. It’s just sooo much info. So let’s talk about estrogen metabolization. Why is this important? 80% of breast cancers are due to poor hormone metabolism/methylation. You can reduce carcinogenesis throughout the onset and developmental phases of cancer formation. CANDIDA - so many people are led to believe that vaginal candida is exacerbated by pr0gesterone. This is simply not true! Candida is actually exacerbated by estrogen. Studies have been done on both pr0gesterone and estrogen which show clearly that pr0gesterone does not cause an overgrowth, it actually protects against it. Estrogen reduces the ability of vaginal epithelial cells to prevent the growth of candida. It has been found to induce the conversion of candida from it's yeast form to it's mycelial form - the more infectious of the two. Pr0gesterone and estrogen work to balance each other. I’ll spare the in depth discussion on this but in brief summary- Your liver can compensate a little but you’ll never have the full detox and digestive capabilities that you do with your gallbladder as part of the system. 👇 Your gallbladder is literally step 3 of the 3 step biochemical process of #detoxification and the bile acids that are concentrated and stored there are more potent for supporting the removal of toxins and digestion of dietary fats than the liver does on its own 😉 Good news is that, many times the gallbladder can be saved! Hormone replacement therapy has been a controversial topic since the women's health initiative used synthetic estrogen and found an increased risk of breast cancer. There have been many holes found in the research since that time and we now believe that there is a risk of endometrial cancer in those that have a uterus and take estrogen without progesterone. And even so there are ways to lessen these risks by starting HRT within ten years of menopause or before age 60, taking the lowest effective dose, and adding progesterone/progestin (for those with a uterus). We are now finding so many benefits to hormone replacement therapy that in many cases the benefits are outweighing the risks. Hot flashes occur because the body’s central nervous system and hormonal balance undergo changes, especially around (peri)menopause. The drop in estrogen and progesterone levels, as well as changes in luteinizing hormone (LH)—a hormone that regulates the reproductive system and triggers ovulation—affect the hypothalamus.
