Woodstock , by Matthews Southern Comfort , a 45rpm released in 1970 . The 1969 Woodstock Music and Art Fair is now seen as a defining event in rock history . The three day festival delivered on its promise of music and peace …. along with rain and mud . A legendary cast performed to 500,000 people , though one leading counter culture figure of the day , Joni Mitchell was not there . To her disdain , her then manager had booked her in for a TV appearance that clashed with the event . She was however there in spirit , as she wrote the song Woodstock , whilst watching the festival on television in her hotel room , and recorded the song on her Ladies Of The Canyon album . The cover version by Crosby , Stills , Nash and Young was a big hit in the US , but in the UK , this cover , by Matthews Southern Comfort became the defininitive version . Ian Matthews had left Fairport Convention , unhappy with the folk rock route the group were leaning towards . He and his group recorded three songs for a BBC programme but were told they needed four . Their hastily arranged version of Woodstock was that fourth song . It proved popular , and when it became obvious that the CSNY version would not be a UK hit , their version was released on the little known Uni label . The song was Matthews Southern Comfort’s only hit and it topped the UK chart in 1970 . Growing up, my brother was interested in history. He was always reading books about war, while I was drawn to the counter culture, the hippies who opposed the war. Maybe this is where my black sheep of the family status originated 🤷🏻♀️ My brother’s books were filled with stories that seemed like tales, like things that could never happen again. We’re too civilized for that sort of thing now. But, unfortunately, they do still happen. So many families are impacted by violence today, not just in Palestine but in places like Ukraine, Syria, Sudan, and more. I’ve been seeing people say they need more education so I’m going to tag a few organizations that are helping people in crisis. Feel free to learn more and donate if you’re called. John Milius’ first draft of the Apocalypse Now screenplay was submitted in Dec 1969, just a few days after Charles Manson and several members of his Family had been arrested for their two-day murder spree of the previous August The original version of Apocalypse Now acknowledges these murders when Gunners Mate Tyrone ‘Mr Clean’ Miller, (later played by the then 14 year old Laurence Fishburne) reads from a news clipping received as part of a package from home: “‘. . . Charles Miller Manson ordered the slaughter of all in the home anyway, as a symbol of protest.’ That’s really weird, ain’t it?” Many critics upon the films release described Coppola’s version of Kurtz as “an archetype of the 1970s guru....an ominous cultleader” of the kind that Manson would model and anticipate as that decade unfolded. Yet, even though Manson had only vaguely—if shockingly—entered public consciousness in the announcement of his arrest three days before the submission of this draft of Apocalypse Now, it is notable that Milius’ Kurtz follows the very same model of this cult leader’s ’acid fascism’ Just as Manson had convinced his followers that he was Jesus Christ, this “tall powerful man wearing a tattered green beret, flak jacket and loincloth” reigns over his ancient temple as a God As with Manson’s Family of young women, Kurtz has what he calls “my concubine pit—where women never see the light of the day. They eat, sleep and bear children in the same room. They only leave when they go to be buried—Yet they are content.” And just as Manson would farm out his women to music industry figures, including record producer Terry Melcher, and supply them with drugs in order to gain his elusive record contract, Kurtz uses the same method to convert Willard’s men, amongst others, to his cause “They have a vice for the Indian hemp.
