❓Are online yoga classes effective? ℹ Yes, online classes can be effective, especially for those with busy schedules. Just as with in-person classes, it's essential to choose a teacher and style that resonates with you, otherwise it will be challenging to practice regularly. Plus, make sure you have a safe and distraction-free space and treat your online class as if you were going out to join a class, i.e. set time aside in your schedule. And be realistic: if 1 hour seems too much to fit in: rather aim for 30 mins twice a week? You might also want to try morning VS evening or during your lunch break even. We all have different times of day when we are either more mentally active, physically or when we feel more energized in general. My personal recommendation for online classes is @yoga_with_kassandra Yoga With Kassandra (I'm in no way affiliated with her or get paid for this tag, it is simply my very own go-to for online practices). Yoga "asanas" (poses) and meditation are both parts of the larger umbrella of the yogic teachings, which go far beyond only a physical practice. What other ways of breathing are there? Through our breath we can give our nervous system what it needs: we inhale = activation, shifting things through inhale-awareness exhale = calming, preparing for sleep, relaxation, peace. retention = at first activating then calming. Here’s something you might like to try: ⏸ breathe with inhalation of same lengths as exhalation, let’s say count slowly to 4 as you breathe in and count again slowly to 4 as you exhale. 🔼 picture a triangle: breathe in the left side, breathe out down the right side and hold your breath as you move from right to left corner, then inhale again. lower cortisol levels 🥗 lower cortisol levels = more alkaline = less inflammation 🏋️ reduced inflammation = body has more capacity to deal with our HEALTH: digestion, absorbing nutrients, immune system is strong and efficient. 🏋️ The pace of our breath affects our nervous system. 🧘 So what happens when we bring our nervous system into a regulated state? 😩 We guide ourselves away from feeling depleted, stressed, anxious, tired and depressed. 💗 our heart rate slows down 🏥 lower heart rate signals to our liver: "we need less cortisol" -> lower cortisol levels 🥗 lower cortisol levels = more alkaline = less inflammation 🏋️ reduced inflammation = body has more capacity to deal with our HEALTH: digestion, absorbing nutrients, immune system is strong and efficient. 🏋️ The pace of our breath affects our nervous system. And again – that’s good, but running on autopilot all the time...well, not so good, right? 🌬 What affects our breath? Activities influence our breath. Physical, of course, but also mental activities like our thoughts and concentration. As well as our emotional activities: excitement, sadness, anger….every emotion has a corresponding breathing pattern! The only emotion that leads to a calm breathing pattern is contentment. None of that is neither bad or good, it’s normal, it is what it is. That’s life and we’re actually not THAT fragile! Have you ever found yourself getting in your car, arriving at the parking lot, and wondering how you got there? It's common to find ourselves disconnected when we do the same things over and over every day. However, being on autopilot takes us away from the beauty and the gift of the present moment. Driving a car on autopilot is one thing, however, navigating our emotions and thought processes on autopilot (i.e. the way we’ve just always dealt with them), can lead to getting stuck in them. Getting stuck emotionally or mentally can show often up as tension in our body. A very simple and powerful way to practice presence is by taking a conscious breath, or two.
