🍓 Our Little Strawberry Dream 🍓👧🏻🐰👶 May marks Birthmark Awareness Month, culminating in World Birthmark Day on May 15th! So many fantastic people and groups including @vbirthmarks @thelifeoflola___ @birthmarksupportgroupuk @flawless_affect invites us in celebrating and embracing our birthmark stories 🙌 Meet Alice, affectionately also known as Big Al, a vibrant six-year-old with a hemangioma (more commonly known as a strawberry birthmark), nestled just above her right eye. When Alice was born, her 🍓mark began to bloom, a sight unfamiliar to me as a new parent. As the mark took shape, worry crept in, especially with its prominent location on her face. We heard reassuring words like, “Don’t fret, it’ll fade with time,” or “It’s just a harmless mark,” but the concern lingered. At four months old, prompted by the size and placement of Alice’s 🍓mark, our local GP referred us to specialists at @greatormondst Children’s Hospital. There, with expert guidance and medication like Propranolol and Timolol, Alice’s mark ceased its growth and began its gradual fade by the time she turned two and a half. Alice’s journey with her birthmark has been one of resilience and self-love. Despite its presence near her eye, her strawberry mark never caused her pain or trouble. Instead, she embraced it as her “beauty mark,” a source of pride and even “special powers!” Now, at six years old, Alice’s birthmark is a faint reminder of her journey, a subtle testament to her uniqueness. Regardless of its visibility, her strawberry mark will forever be part of her story. If sharing our experience can alleviate one parent’s worries or educate one person on the beauty of birthmarks, then we’ve achieved our goal! 😘💛 Please feel free to share with those who may benefit from our story. With a gleeful hop, Alice bounded onto the sweet treat and began her solitary adventure. She climbed sugar-coated peaks and slid down creamy slopes, laughing in delight as she savoured every delicious moment. Keen to reach to the top!! 💪 As the stars twinkled above, Alice realised something magical. She didn’t need anyone else to enjoy this sweet wondrous moment. Being alone wasn’t lonely; it was actually liberating! Alice could dance, sing, and explore to her heart’s content without a care in the world! Introducing Jimmy the Crab crochet plushie to the family 🦀, the friend EVERYONE should have - lovingly handmade by the super talented @smileytangerine! ☀️ I commissioned Silkin to bring Jimmy to real-life and she has done an incredible job on him! Meet Jimmy the Crab from our debut children’s book – When Alice Sleeps: TREASURE MAP Jimmy is a cute, adorkable but clumsy hard-shell crab, who is currently suffering from a terrible cold out at sea, and gets involved in an accident with Alice and Frankie... This is a very simplified post on my process and stages I tend to go through when coming up with characters with personality for our When Alice Sleeps world. Honestly, the process of developing good characters can be very difficult, and making characters that work is not simple – they should connect with your audience somehow! I like to draw using animals, truthfully because I CAN’T DRAW REAL PEOPLE!!! 🤣 Drawing in a super realistic style where everything is proportional and anatomy plays an importance is not my design strength. The characters in WAS’s world allows me to exaggerate what might be ‘normal’ in a more fantastical way! My design style can help me to get away with a lot of weird proportions. Hello everyone! As some of you already know, I’m the co-creator of the “When Alice Sleeps” children’s brand and we’ve finally managed to pull the finger out and release our first book. When I started my journey as a (one day) critically acclaimed author, I imagined that I’d be writing heart-pounding crime novels or a big thick tome packed with thought-provoking ideas putting the world to rights. Instead, I’ve found myself starting my literary career with a book about a rabbit at sea with crabs. Well, a crab.
