Always feels good to wear my vintage Mark, Fore & Strike jacket but how to wear this scarf is still frustrating. I decided to give it one more chance and I think it worked out alright. If I can recreate this “knot” remains to be seen. The jacket though is a true old school beauty. The original Mark, Fore & Strike shop - a “tropical Abercrombie & Fitch” - opened in Delray Beach in 1951 and sold “resort goods”; everything from spear guns and boomerangs to Hawaiian shirts and “true walking shorts”. The company was founded and ran by solid, mid-century men - one of whom had the great, old school first name “Persifor” - who were straight up Distinguished Flying Cross-winning war hero pilots. Jim Steinman created the world’s Meat Loaf sang about and he had a batch of songs ready for the follow-up to the enormously successful Bat Out of Hell. Trouble was, Meat Loaf had lost his voice. He also lost his house and nearly his mind; he was going through a time. Steinman couldn’t bear for these songs to NOT be heard so he decided to sing them himself - with help from Canadian Rory Dodd (who would later be featured on the hit recording of Steinman’s composition “Total Eclipse of the Heart”). So, Bad for Good became Jim Steinman’s only solo studio recording. Meat Loaf would eventually record many of the songs on this record and release his own album later this same year, Dead Ringer. Seems his voice was intact to make that record; maybe Steinman should have waited. But then we wouldn’t have this rarity. It originally was released with a bonus disc containing two tracks; sadly my copy does not include this. Tattoo You The Rolling Stones Rolling Stones Records, 1981 I listened to this for the first time a couple of weeks ago. The downside of having over 100 LPs in the Yet to Be Listened To section is that I’ll listen to what is up next and then hurry on to the next one. This record I wanted to revisit, particularly the second side. Despite being “cobbled together” from outtakes from the previous decade, it topped the charts in the US - to date, the last Stones album to do so. The highlight of Side Two has to be the ballad “Worried About You”. Notable for featuring a guitar solo by a non-Stone - Wayne Perkins was auditioning to replace Mick Taylor - and for its depth of feeling. Shaft (OST) Isaac Hayes Enterprise Records (1971) This album contains one of my all-time favourite songs and it is not the iconic, Oscar-winning title track. Fans of vintage film music may understand. I love both the smooth and erudite soundtrack work of the great Hank Mancini and the gritty, robust sound of soul music. Straddling these two worlds is a tune like “Café Regio’s” from this soundtrack by Hayes. It is incidental music in the style of a cat like Mancini but with the sensibility of soul and it’s on my list of Top 100 songs. The 19-minute “Do Your Thing” is another great example of this hybrid sound. Debuting this record tonight, a birthday gift from my sons. David Soul Private Stock Records Released January 14, 1976 Soul’s debut went to Number 2 in the UK; an album by Slim Whitman kept it out of the top spot. The record features songs that Dave wrote with Gardner McKay including “Black Bean Soup”, a cool song Soul sang on Starsky & Hutch. There’s also a wonderful song co-written by Bruno Kirby. Original versions of the LP featured a tune written by Neil Sedaka but that song was replaced on later editions (like mine) by Soul’s Number One hit single, “Don’t Give Up On Us”. Nicky Hopkins and Taj Mahal play on the album. Invented in ‘97 by a man named…Murrell, the knot was created to “achieve a youthful and artistic appearance and it's been described as a ‘rebellion against the office tie establishment’…This tie knot is robust and sturdy and it will last you comfortably throughout the day.” It’s robust, alright, and it takes up a lot of tie. Inspired in part by watching The Bob Newhart Show lately, I decided to go full-on 70s today. It’s my vintage suit from Witty Bros out of Erie, PA. I always say how amazing it was to have found a suit that fit me just waiting for me in a thrift store. But truth be told the pants are a little big around the waist and there are no belt loops. Suspenders solve the problem except the ones I own don’t match this suit. Then there’s the tie from the same era, the mighty Beefeater with what is called Barney Miller width. Note the half Windsor knot. I had to employ it here as this tie is of very thick material and not very long. I couldn’t afford to use much tie making the knot. Held securely in place by my @tiemags This suit wears like iron. I can hang the pants in half on the jacket hanger and never have to iron. I think I could roll these pants up in a ball and store them under my mattress and never have to iron them. Felt like I was wearing armour, comfortable armour.
