The disappearance of Emily Marr - Louise Candlish Tabby is in France, heartbroken, broke and homeless. She overhears a villager saying their front door access code outloud and without thinking lets herself in when the house is empty. She meets Emmie who’s living in the property and as the story develops Emmie is not who she seems. I loved this book. It had so many unexpected twists and turns all the way through. The ending was a little disappointing for me, but maybe there will be a follow up which would be great. #thedisappearanceofemilymarr #louisecandlish #helensbookreviews #bookstagram #bookreview #ilovereading

Book Review: THE DISAPPEARANCE OF EMILY MARR ✨✨✨✨ This is the first book I’ve read this month because I’ve struggled to find time to read recently 🥺 I met Louise Candlish at a book signing event back in April, where I bought her newest book. I then purchased this book a few weeks later from a charity shop, and this is the first book I’ve read by Louise Candlish. Having read and loved it, I’m super excited to read her newest book, THE ONLY SUSPECT soon! #louisecandlish #thedisappearanceofemilymarr #contemporarymystery #bookreview #bookstagram #firstbookofthemonth

📚 #BookReview - #TheDisappearanceOfEmilyMarr by @louisecandlish Exquisite drama, resplendent with social critique and a jaw-dropping twist! I’m continuing my binge of the wonderful Louise Candlish’s backlist, but this time with a re-read (which was prompted by none other than @lisajewelluk - thanks Lisa!). I read The Disappearance of Emily Marr a number of years ago (before I was reviewing) and remember being absolutely stunned by the shock revelation in the final portion, which I hadn’t seen coming in the slightest! It’s one of those literary moments that turns a novel completely on it’s head and makes you rethink everything that has gone before. It’s perfectly executed, with not a single hint to have you anywhere remotely close to the truth before it is laid bare. I absolutely love when a book floors me like that! Whilst I could clearly remember this twist upon re-reading, what that allowed me to do was really lose myself in all the other aspects of what makes this book such a fantastic read. However, I will firstly say that if you enjoy Candlish’s more recent psychological thriller novels and like a book that is character driven and evenly paced, you should definitely give this one a go whilst eagerly awaiting what she brings us next! During this read, I really appreciated how much of a nuanced and important social critique this novel is. Candlish focuses on the impact of sudden infamy and being thrust into the immediate (negative) spotlight in a raw and emotional way. She focuses on the distinctly 21st century problem of an ‘always on’ media and the incessant public consumption of click-bait articles and sensationalist headlines. It’s an epidemic in our culture and Candlish puts a very human and relatable story at the heart. It caused me to question my own media consumption and how easily I can be drawn into stories that scream of scandal. Emily Marr is an average woman, who isn’t guilty of anything obscene and yet she is catapulted into notoriety and made a pariah of illicit virtues. She is not a fluffy, perfect character, but the absurdity and heartache of what happens to her makes her painfully human and much more likeable. (Contd in comments)

Have you ever chosen the wrong cover image for a #flatlay? Last week I created an image of listening to The Disappearance on the train. I was quite pleased with the results. But it turns out that there are two different versions of the novel - the one I was listening to was this one, and the one whose jacket I reproduced was a reissue *with epilogue* 😬 And now I can’t decide if I want to read / hear the epilogue or not ⚖️ #BookReview: This seemed a bit slower than her other novels to get going, but I trusted Candlish and stuck with it. As usual, I disliked all her characters, especially narrators Emily and Tabby, but, again, I trusted Candlish. In the end, for me, that trust paid off. I don't want to give away plot spoilers, but as the author wrote on her own website, "Having researched extensively the outcomes of missing persons enquiries, I decided that this was a novel that might bear an open ending. More often than not we don't get an answer in reality, so why must we have one in fiction?" (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52385074-the-disappearance-of-emily-marr). For me, this really worked, but apparently I am in the minority, because according to Candlish in the same post, "Before long, I’d received thousands of emails asking me what happens next – and I duly supplied notes." She rationalises this by sharing, "In my clever nod to authenticity, I forgot that readers like a proper ending. It doesn’t have to be a happy one (and rarely is with me), just the right one for the characters." This really is the crux of the matter. For me, this was the right ending. I could tell it was building up to it from the moment Tabby arrives in London and confronts the journalist who supposedly ruined Emily's life. Her answer to the question, "Where is Arthur [Emily's married lover]?" sent a shiver of recognition down my back as I realised at least the bare bones of what we were about to find out. But now I know there’s an epilogue. Do I want to read it, or not? #ThreeWordReview: Real ending quandary #BookReviews #ThreeWordReviews #LouiseCandlish #TheDisappearanceOfEmilyMarr #bookstagram #audiobookstagram #bookstagramUK

If you are paying attention, you’ll notice that the math of what I’ve read does not match the posts. (I wouldn’t expect you to count - pls don’t - life is short). I haven’t posted books I hated. In this, I’m siding with the author not the reader. I might insult a book, but still only post if there are redeeming qualities. #thedisappearanceofemilymarr has a few. The writing is good. The story is current and interesting. I didn’t once feel that I wasn’t going to finish it …. But … I didn’t really like the characters. Things about the narrators choices confused me - until an unexpected twist (not a bad plot line, part of the good writing). Post plot twist? What happened? Did the editor say “this is a second book we may or may not pursue… let’s just stop the book RIGHT HERE!” Did the author herself not feel it was interesting enough? Who believed that the story was done??? It is not! If you like #louisecandlish pls tell me if this is just her style or quirk. If you like books without endings, this is for you. If you like characters whining a lot, this is for you. ⭐️⭐️ with a sigh, and some guilt for a nasty review. #maybedontreadthisbook #bookstagram #bookstagrammer #bookreview

📖 #53📖 The Disappearance of Emily Marr - Louise Candlish Tis the season for curling up in front of fire and getting through that TBR pile! This was a slow starter, but really kept me guessing right up until the end. Emily Marr is a victim of the British media, after having an affair with a married surgeon which triggered a series of tragic events. A few months later, Tabby ends up stranded and penniless after a bad break up, and crosses paths with Emmie, who offers her a place to stay. But something isn't quite right, Emmie is reserved and hides away, and the more Tabby tries to uncover, the more complicated the story becomes...

Set in a windswept town off the coast of France...a book about secrets, infidelity and scandal. "Loving him, then, was my choice. I said that even if we were never again in the same city, much less living as neighbours, that I believed the love still mattered...I reminded him of what he said to me the first time we met, and how Istill know it is true: Everybody counts." Wow! What an absolutely brilliant book this has been. I am a huge fan of Louise Candlish and can't believe I hadn't read this one sooner. I'm also extremely thankful to have this 2018 reissue as when I spoke to Louise via twitter last week she let me know this had the addition of an epilogue. I honestly don't think I could have handled the book ending without the epilogue. This is what gave the story the resolution I so desperately needed! . I liked how the book started with a prologue and I had no idea at all just how much of a crucial part this would play in the story and didn't guess at all where it would fit in. I really loved the dual narrative of Emily's chapters being in the first person and Tabby's in the third person too. I was absolutely gobsmacked by the reveal and huge twist that Tabby uncovers. I thought I had worked it out and couldn't have been more wrong. It was absolutely fantastic and I love when an author takes you on a path you never knew you would go down! . The way in which the media and the press can affect somebody's life is very cleverly explored in this story too. It was absolutely awful and so sad to imagine someone going through that experience! . I've not included the synopsis here as I think it gives a little too much away about the plot but if you like psychological thrillers or have read and enjoyed Louise's other books I would definitely recommend this one. I would love to know if you have read this or any of Louise's other books. #thedisappearanceofemilymarr #louisecandlish #authorlove #bookrecommendation #psychologicalthriller #psychologicalthrillers #booksandflowers #bookflatlay #bookphoto #bookishfeatures #booktag #bookish #ilovebooks #ilovereading #booknerd #bookgeek #bookworm #bookstagram #booklove #booklover #bookaddict #bookaholic #amreading #reading #lovereading #bookphotography #igbooks #igreads #bookobsession

Louise Candlish (2018) THE DISAPPEARANCE OF EMILY MARR London. Sphere ⭐⭐⭐ 3 out of 5 stars The sleeve reads, "Some secrets are too dangerous to share . . . When Emily Marr begins an affair with her married neighbour, the celebrated surgeon Arthur Woodhall, she has no idea of the tragedy and scandal their actions will cause. With shattering speed, she becomes the object of a media witchhunt, her only choice to change her identity and vanish. Soon after, Tabby Dewhurst arrives on the Ile de Ré in France, estranged from her family and unable to afford even a room for the night. By chance, she meets Emmie Mason, whose offer of friendship is at odds with her obsession with privacy. As Tabby sinks deeper into Emmie’s strange, hidden world, she begins to form suspicions – suspicions that will lead her back to England and to a revelation so shocking she must question everything she knows." The twist wasn't the twist I was thinking or hoping for. Nonetheless, it's a twist that blindsides you. °•☆ August Wrap Up ☆•° . . I am really happy with my reads this month! I have enjoyed reading every single one of these books, and although I thought I'd be too busy to read much this month I actually did okay! . . 🛋 I'll Be There For You 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 - It's about F•R•I•E•N•D•S - what's not to love?! I love reading about my favourite show and this book explores it brilliantly. . . 🐢 Turtles All The Way Down ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I loved this book. It took me a bit of time to get into it which is why it only gets 4☆, but I enjoyed my first John Green read! I'll definitely be looking out for more of his books in the future. . . 🌿 The Disappearance of Emily Marr ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - The only reason this book didn't get a 5☆ is because I found the beginning a little slow. Once I got into it I was hooked! And the ending completely shocked me and I love a book that surprises me! . . 🦋 The Doll Factory ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - This book was brilliant, but there was one aspect that annoyed me slightly (no spoilers here!) I really enjoyed the read. It perhaps was a bit predictable in places, but that didn't take away from any enjoyment of the story. . . 🌸 The Nowhere Girls ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I feel like everybody needs to read this book. Well written, though I found some of the speech to be slightly staged in some places. The read is even more shocking when you realise that some of the misogyny referred to in the plot is based on real-life events. . . . So the house move didn't really go to plan this month due to some delays, so it's now looking like September is gonna be my busy month! Hopefully I can still get some reading done though 😁 . . I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's September TBRs! ♡ . . . . . . #AugustWrapUp #monthlyreads #wrapup #bookpost #bookreviews #bookratings #igreads #bookstagrammer #bookishpic #bookworm #booksiveread #bookstagramuk #bookstagramfeature #bookstagrammersunite #unitedbookstagram #lovetoread #tatwd #TurtlesAllTheWayDown #illbethereforyou #TheDollFactory #TheDisappearanceOfEmilyMarr #TheNowhereGirls #readingwithquinn

Unexpectedly in Cologne airport and not too annoyed about it as I’m getting to finish off this easy-read indulgence. This is a great book! Page-turny, plot-twisty and very well constructed. @eastbourneeyesurgeon1 This is the book I didn’t get round to writing!! Read it. You’ll love it.
