I am a smiler. I smile at everyone I pass on the street when out I’m walking my dog. I say “good morning” or “isn’t it a beautiful day?” Or just “Hi” Some people smile back in agreement, some nod, others put their head down as they rush past to avoid any contact. The other day was dark and cold with rain and although I was sure the earth was singing with joy, I wasn’t thrilled to be out all zipped up in rain gear with my drenched hood smacking against my forehead. I only saw one other sole out in that downpour. A teenager. Stick thin, black jeans, black sweatshirt emblazoned with some rock band I’d never heard of, his face ghostly pale as though he hadn’t seen the sun in a year. He marched towards me, head down braced against the torrent. I tightened my grip on Cosette’s leash letting her know there was no time for loving attention from this soaking teenager. As he closed in, I did what I always do. I smiled at him. He stopped in front of me, looked into my face and down at Cosette, then he looked over his shoulder like he was being followed. We were the only two people on the street. “Were you smiling at *me*?” he asked. “Yup. Nice day, eh?” I laughed. He shook his head, gave me that teenage look that says “are you nuts?” and continued walking away. Thursday night thoughts. You can… period!!! You can do, be, say, think , believe, dream but you can make it happen! Life is extremely rough right now for a lot of people, not only economically, but emotionally and mentally. When you’re having a down day, month, week, try to think of one thing in your life that’s positive and you’re thankful for. Today I was blessed with a new patient. She was amazing. The sweetest, caring yet fun and easy going sweetheart. A beautiful soul. I’m so happy our paths have crossed. As if that didn’t leave me smiling, I finally took 5 minutes to introduce myself and talk to the tenants down the hall who had me cracking up the entire time! That might be some trouble😂 but it was such an amazing feeling today to be surrounded by positive loving energy. It’s not very often you get that but it’s out there and you can make it happen and spread it around. We don’t need more negativity in this world. Over the past four and a half years, whenever I’m out of town on a Tuesday, I get dressed up in a #1950s outfit with hat, gloves, and handbag— just like I would at home. Today, as I prepare and count down to the big day @surreytedx I wore a comfy grey knit #midiskirt with matching sweater… they pack easily, and I found them, along with the #floral #vintagescarf and classic black #lillianncoat at the fabulous @houseofsavoyvic consignment store… the pink #vintagegloves with rose details were donated to my project, and I found the black felt #midcentury #vintagehat with pink satin trim and a spray of black feathers at a thrift store, somewhere in my travels. The corsage is one I just made, and it made people smile as I poked around a few vintage, thrift and consignment stores in lovely old #cloverdalebc …had some truly lovely connections #talkingtostrangers there. I was especially uplifted by a young couple with a newborn… they were all three so #splendid and I asked how they managed that, with a brand-new wee one. She pointed to her guy and he pointed to her, and they both insisted the other one was the superhero parent. Their mutual appreciation was inspiring and, I think, the most splendid thing about them. I’m so glad I noticed the young woman’s lovely bow in her hair. She says it’s her signature, to wear a big bow, and she gets lots of compliments. Just 2 days ago, I was driving past a small shopping center in Honolulu, and guess who I see? It looked just like Uncle Clay! Back in 2020, during the tough lockdown in New York City, my family of five found a huge escape in “Somebody Feed Phil,” a show where Phil Rosenthal travels and eats his way around the world. The Hawai’i episode was a favorite – Phil meets Uncle Clay at HOPA - House of Pure Aloha. The shave ice looked amazing, but what really struck us was Uncle Clay’s genuine warmth and love for people. We must have watched that episode 27 times, especially the parts with Uncle Clay, which the kids loved. It brought a bit of sunshine into our cramped apartment every time. Fast forward to now, I’m seeing him in real life! I went up to say hello, and he greets me with the biggest, most sincere bear hugs. That moment, it was like all the warmth and kindness he showed on TV was right there in person. Uncle Clay left me with “Keep your dreams alive! And keep your Ohana close.” Reflecting on 2023, it wasn’t the easiest year. We all had our ups and downs, kind of like trying to navigate through rough seas. But meeting Uncle Clay, who’s like the embodiment of the aloha spirit, reminded me of how to stay strong. And hopeful. He built HOPA from just a $400 start, despite facing all sorts of challenges, from growing up in foster care to being homeless. His story is a real-life example of never giving up, no matter what. As we’re stepping into 2024, I’m thinking about how Uncle Clay’s approach to life, his Pure Aloha Oath, could really make a difference for us too. I’ve got these principles he lives by right on my desk: * Smile at strangers – it’s a simple act that can brighten anyone’s day. * Listen with intent – it’s about really hearing what others have to say. * Offer help – a small act of kindness can mean a lot. * Forgive – holding onto grudges doesn’t help anyone. * Celebrate diversity – it’s what makes the world interesting. * Be thankful – showing gratitude can change your perspective. These aren’t just nice ideas; they’re what Uncle Clay used to build his life and his business. Can these be good reminders to us all? Peace and much Aloha 🫶

The kind of smile that gives hope to the hopeless and warms the coldest heart, I looked into the elevator mirror, but the smile did not mirror back, I've been searching for that smile for days, must have lost it along the way, or then may be I had loaned it away...
