So yesterday, I went back to Wales and took on a custom trail I found on one of my walking apps. This was the South Wales Three Peaks. Parking at Abergavenny, I proceeded to walk a circular route covering three mountain peaks: The Blorenge at 561 metres, the iconic Sugarloaf at 596 metres, and Skirrid Fawr at 487 metres. Because it was comparable in distance and total ascent, this was the perfect test to see how far I’ve come in my training for the Yorkshire Peaks in 2 weeks- the dress rehearsal before the main performance, you could say. 🌞 SAVE THIS POST FOR FUTURE WALKS — Skirrid Fawr, just outside Abergavenny, Monmouthshire 🏴 🗺️ An approx 5km total out and back. 🚗 National Trust carpark, which is relatively small so go early or choose a quieter day to visit. Nearest postcode is NP7 8AW. This is a really gorgeous route, so easy to navigate although quite steep to start with. You follow the path from the carpark to a gate (pic 2), go through it and head on up through the woodland (pic 3), following the signs with yellow arrows (pic 4). You’ll soon come out onto the ridge (pic 5). Here the walk flattens out and you’ll get amazing views of the surrounding hills in Abergavenny (pic 6), including Sugar Loaf and the Blorenge. Follow along the path, and you’ll make it to the trig point (pic 7). I love this hike! I’ve done it a few times and it’s a great one to do if you have little time. The views of the surrounding countryside are amazing 🤩❤️

When I was about 10, my Dad gave me The Hobbit as a gift and I have been obsessed ever since. Because of that, I’ve always found woodlands and mountains to be the most magical of places. I’m lucky enough to live just under a mountain these days, and so as soon as the sun makes an appearance and time is on our side, we choose which one we fancy and head for a mini adventure of our own. Now I enjoy the walks with the kids, imagining Dragons under the mountains and spotting faces in the bark of the trees. Today we ventured through Pant Skirrid Wood and up onto Skirrid Fawr. South Wales Three Peaks Trial - Part 3: Skirrid Fawr I did it! I completed the South Wales Three Peaks Trial on Saturday - this is a review of the third and final ascent… Thankful for coming down from the inhospitable conditions on the Sugar Loaf, I set my sights on a sunny Skirrid Fawr in the distance - and as I walked my way down towards the checkpoint at Pantygelli, I was keenly aware of the dropping altitude - every lost metre would be one I would have to re-climb… After a water break and a chat with some friendly patrons outside The Crown pub, I was glad to walk the gently inclining country road with some fellow participants - I would have easily missed the unmanned checkpoint had I been alone… As we reached the northern part of the climb up the Skirrid, I spent a lot of time catching my breath, eating Jelly Babies and looking back at the views - and not toward the ascent, which I guess I was pretending wasn’t there! It was by no means the biggest climb of the day, but the route up that I decided on put me in mind of the black stairs in LOTR - more like climbing a ladder in places… But I got to the top - sweet relief - and a friendly walker offered to take my picture - I was leaning heavily on the trig! Then all that was before me was a 90-minute walk, mostly downhill, back to the finish! I completed the course in 8hrs 50mins - and at the time of writing have raised just over £1,100 combined for the two charities I was doing it for - so the pain was worth it! A brilliant ‘Good Friday’ related Welsh legend concerns Mynydd Ysgyryd Fawr (or in English; The Skirrid). It lies north of Abergavenny in Monmouthshire. It is also known as ‘The Holy Mountain’. It was said that at the exact moment of the crucifixion the whole mountain shook until the central section collapsed giving it the distinctive stepped outline we see today. The name ‘ysgyryd’ is derived from the Welsh word for earth quake. In the medieval period it was a popular place of pilgrimage and at certain points of the path you can take if you are climbing it, there are old stone steps to help the pilgrims with their ascent. It is well worth the trip as the view from the top is amazing. You can see across 4 counties. There is also a large flat stone, possibly a Neolithic monument, known as the Devil’s Stone half way up it. This time referencing another legend that the collapsed part of the mountain was used as a seat by Satan himself. Last weekend we added another extension to our walk through Clydach Gorge. This walk starts just below the Gateway Bridge on the A465. With all the rain we have had recently the run off the rocks before the waterfall was fantastic The waterfall at Hafod Arch itself was lovely and full.The second to last photo was taken from the other side of the A465 and with the trees still bare you can see most of the waterfall in one and a glimpse of the water flowing through the Arch below the path.The final photo was taken from the old tram way and looks down through Clydach Gorge to Skirrid Fawr in the distance. #hafodarch #clydachgorge #walkinginwales #waterfalls #chasingwaterfalls #waterfallsinwales #skirrid #skirridfawr
