~Shuna’s Journey~ 🌾🦌 When the publisher/translator’s notes described this story as less of a manga and closer to an illustrated novel I couldn’t have agreed more. I had a bit of cognitive dissonance since I thought at first I’d seen this all before in Miyazaki’s movies. Which of course was the point, a lot of his themes that he would go on to explore in animation show up here in the manga. Now having read and reflected on the series more, it’s such an interesting piece of work and history. All the hallmarks of Miyazaki, that would later be hallmarks of Studio Ghibi are all here. It’s such an interesting manga to read slowly and savor, verses just binge it and be done with it. After months of searching, I finally have Hayao Miyazaki’s graphic novel masterpiece, Shuna’s Journey. It was a pleasure to see Miyazaki’s techniques in pencil and water color. Shuna’s Journey manga or book by Hayao Miyazaki was written contemporaneously w the Nausicaä manga (1983). It’s his retelling of a Tibetan folktale using watercolor images. There are a lot of commonalities between Shuna and Nausicaä although there is no direct connection, they are two distinct creative endeavors. It was only recently translated and published in English forty years after its initial release. It’s beautifully painted and worth checking out for any Miyazaki fan, but it is much closer in themes and intensity to Nausicaä and Mononoke. While reading through it, there are so many artistic and narrative parallels between Shuna and Nausicaä, I keep meaning to post a few side by side comparisons. Me crucé con esta belleza en una librería y decidí leerlo. 🍃 "El Viaje de Shuna", del galardonado y reconocido director de anime japonés #HayaoMiyazaki fue publicado originalmente en 1983 pero hace poco salió una nueva edición que es preciosa. 🦙Cuenta la historia de un joven heredero de una tierra baldía, en donde la gente que trabaja la tierra se rompe el lomo para cosechar, pero el resultado es casi nulo. ⛰️ Shuna decide emprender un viaje para descifrar cómo ayudar a su pueblo cuando se cruza con un anciano que le habla de unas semillas doradas con las que podría devolverle fertilidad a sus tierras. 😍 Este manga tiene unas ilustraciones hermosas, repletas de capas y paisajes acuarelados. Con personajes de rasgos típicos del estilo de su autor. Con una historia simple que conlleva una trama histórica como solo Hayao sabe plasmar. Y con un mensaje contundente sobre nuestro rol en la Tierra y lo agradecidxs que debemos estar con la naturaleza con todo lo que nos brinda. 💔 Viendo su filmografía, notamos que Miyazaki siempre utiliza el arte para hablar de injusticias, de guerras que no tienen sentido y del daño que el Ser Humano le provoca a otros humanos y a su propio entorno. I’ve been reading miyazaki’s “Shuna’s journey” since a while, yeah taking my time with it cos it’s evocatively beautifully illustrated and so incredibly written. As it’s based on a tibetan folklore, it really reminded me of my own solo travel to tibet. And it’s not a review of it cos am still finishing it but just sharing my experience with it. As i grew up with the miyazaki’s work. And recently when i saw this piece of work, i had this feeling it’s gonna hit right in the feels and yes it is absolutely a surreal poetic miyazaki work and it do feels akin to princess mononoke, perhaps just because it was originally written in 1983, and recently it got an eng translation. Well honestly in these two years, i have also became so much fascinated with the tibetan culture and as last year i finally went there, stayed there for 15 days in my travelogue, completely isolated from the world, and i walked, trekked, talked to locals, heard their stories and just experienced that hidden part of the world which was so breathtaking and so unreal. And the way miyazaki has illustrated this fable through water colours and he just captured those beautiful tibetans inspired landscapes so vividly. It’s so magical to see how this all comes into a fruition from a tibetan folktale and personally i felt that overall it is just oozing with all the eastern asian influences to it. And it isn’t a typical miyazaki tale, in the sense that it’s a bit more bizarre, surreal and more adult geared matured tangled fable which is what makes it a little different than some of his films. Every single ghibli fan and specially a miyazaki fan needs to buy and read this masterpiece. It’s all art and a profound tibetan fable with miyazaki’s unique vision. Dus ik ben net iets ouder dan dit meesterwerk. Tevens maakte hij de illustraties met waterverf voor deze manga/graphic novel. In 2022 kwam er pas een Engelse vertaling uit. En nu dan eindelijk in 2024 bij mij in de boekenkast. What do we think of these Nausicaa sequel rumours? 🤔 After The Boy and the Heron, I heard this getting mentioned due to a few snippets of artwork being created at the end of the new NHK doc ‘2399 Days with Hayao Miyazaki’ by the man himself. While I love both the film and the original manga, I think getting a sequel movie would be a mistake. A short, spin off I perhaps wouldn’t mind but a remake as a TV series that sticks to the source material would be preferable for me personally and something I’d love to see! A sequel to a film that felt ‘complete’ from back in the 80s feels a bit redundant and just plain strange! Regardless I’ll be excited to see what comes out of the studio next! Die Bilder sind einzigartig und man erkennt hier schon Figuren und Wesen, die Miyazaki dann später in "Nausicäa", "Das Schloss im Himmel", "Prinzessin Mononoke" und noch einigen anderen Klassikern wiederverwendet hat. #Buchbesprechung: „Shunas Reise“ von Hayao Miyazaki, übersetzt von Nora Bierich, erschienen im Reprodukt Verlag Wem das Duo auf dem Titelbild bekannt vorkommt, schwelgt vermutlich in Erinnerung an „Prinzessin Mononoke“ und liegt damit natürlich ganz richtig. „Shunas Reise“, Ghibli-Mitbegründer Hayao Miyazakis Manga-Frühwerk, das dank des Berliner Reprodukt Verlags sage und schreibe 40 Jahre nach seiner Erstveröffentlichung in Japan nun endlich auch auf Deutsch erhältlich ist, birgt offensichtliche Parallelen zu jenem Anime. In beiden geht es um einen jungen Prinzen, der die Ödnis seiner Heimat verlässt und auf dem abenteuerreichen Weg in das Territorium der Götter mit einer jungen Frau, deren Weg er kreuzt, gegen Widrigkeiten vorrückt. Auch Yakkul, Ashitakas tierischer Begleiter aus „Prinzessin Mononoke“, teilt mehr als nur die Namensverwandtschaft mit Shunas treuem Gefährten. Wenn er etwa harte Themen wie Sklaverei und Menschenhandel anspricht, betont das die Kunst, welche auch viele Ghibli-Filme prägt, sozialkritische Komponenten und ernste, die Welt betreffende Themen in einer zauberhaft aufblühenden Fantasy-Welt zu beschreiben. Viele der Themen, denen sich Miyazaki über die Jahre in seinen Werken immer wieder gewidmet hat, sind auch hier schon deutlich vorhanden. Der fantasievolle Charakter der Erzählung spiegelt sich für mich auch im Zeichenstil wieder, welcher sich außergewöhnlich anfühlt, weil „Shunas Reise“ in den seltensten Momenten an einen typischen Comic erinnert. Sprechblasen werden ausgespart, wörtliche Rede sparsam eingesetzt. J'ai lu "Le voyage de Shuna" de Hayao Miyazaki 🦌 Bon... je ne vais pas m'étendre sur le sujet parce que... C'EST UNE PURE MERVEILLE ! ✨✨✨ "Le voyage de Shuna" est l'une des premières œuvres de Hayao Miyazaki. Il s'agit de l'adaptation d'un conte tibétain en un récit illustré tout en aquarelle et crayonné. Chaque page est une œuvre d'art à elle seule. On en prend plein les yeux, la lecture est fluide et le récit comporte déjà tout ce qui va faire la recette des merveilleux univers connus à l'auteur. Si l'histoire retranscrite nous est inédite, l'esthétique de l'ouvrage nous est en revanche bien connu puisqu'il mêle somptueusement les univers de "Princesse Mononoke" et de "Nausicaä de la vallée du vent". Et c'est un vrai délice de retrouver des références qui seront ensuite utilisées dans les films à venir. I heard about this Miyazaki story not long after watching The Boy and the Heron and it felt like perfect timing! I'm a big fan of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli generally so I knew that I'd enjoy this story no matter what. The drawings are beautiful and will feel familiar to Studio Ghibli fans. The story reminded me of Princess Mononoke with sprinklings of other characters and scenery from Miyazaki's many movies. Shuna travels far away from his land in search of a mystery and miraculous gold grain to feed his people. In the translator's notes, we learn that the story is based on a Tibetan folktale. This was a lovely read. The illustrations are beautiful watercolours in muted tones. I had the feeling of reading a carefully done storyboard. Like children's books, most pages consist of illustrations with a sentence or two (rather than speech bubbles). Studio Ghibli fans will love this as will anyone who wishes to be lost in a mythical world for a few hours. 🌾 Le voyage de Shuna d'Hayao Miyazaki, paru aux @editionssarbacane en novembre 2023 (160 p.) Attendue depuis de nombreuses années en France, il était temps de faire la rencontre de cette œuvre de jeunesse d' #hayaomiyazaki . Shuna est le prince d'un petit royaume aride en proie à la famine. Faisant la rencontre d'un voyageur d'une contrée lointaine lui parlant d'une céréale qui pourrait nourrir son peuple, le jeune prince se lance dans un périple à la recherche du salut de son royaume. D'abord étonnée par sa narration assez froide, je me suis laissée porter par l'onirisme de ce conte illustré, signé par le maître de l'animation japonaise et inspiré du folklore tibétain. Paru en 1983 au Japon (soit deux ans avant la fondation du Studio Ghibli), ce conte sombre et mélancolique laisse entrevoir tout le travail à venir d'Hayao Miyazaki, notamment sur Nausicaä de la Vallée du Vent et Princesse Mononoké, aussi bien du côté graphique que narratif. On y trouve donc des thèmes familiers de son œuvre et de celle de Gorō Miyazaki (qui y a puisé l'inspiration pour Les Contes de Terremer) : la quête initiatique, le rapport des humains au divin et à la Nature, la complexité de la nature humaine... Il m'a été au départ difficile de m'immerger pleinement dans cette lecture, la narration sans dialogue crée une certaine distance avec les personnages, dont la psychologie reste relativement tue. J'ai eu l'impression de survoler l'ensemble, de ne pas pouvoir m'attacher aux personnages. Mais ça ne m'a pas empêchée d'être happée par la beauté visuelle de l'album, avec ses aquarelles lumineuses, et par son récit intemporel. Touchant et épuré, il vient explorer l'ambivalence de la nature humaine et questionner notre rapport aux ressources de la Terre. Les rebondissements et l'action sont au rendez-vous, pourtant l'album est aussi extrêmement contemplatif et poétique. Tout cela crée une ambiance étrange, qui permet de vivre pleinement cette lecture nous entraînant dans un univers sombre et violent où malgré tout la lumière et l'espoir subsistent. if you’re looking for a cozy non-pharmaceutical sleep aid, may I recommend “Shuna’s Journey” by Hayao Miyazaki? It was his first book (released in 1983) but got its first Western release this year. It’s a 20-minute read (at the very most), kid-friendly, gorgeously illustrated and appears to exist in the Princess Mononoke-verse. Par quel bout prendre Le voyage de Shuna ? Une fois n’est pas coutume, je vais partir d’un ressenti : en lisant et parcourant les 6 chapitres j’ai eu l’impression de retourner dans le passé. Non parce qu’il s’agit d’une œuvre parue en 1983 au Japon et qui « fait son âge » mais parce que les aventures de Shuna et de son yakkuru me rappellent les histoires et autres contes qu’on pouvait me lire ou que je lisais quand j’étais petit. Et je dois avouer que l’impression n’est pas désagréable. **** Parce que ce récit illustré associe comme il se doit les tableaux de Miyazaki avec le texte et les quelques bulles présentes. Les cases courent parfois sur les deux pages, les paysages et personnages défilent dans un tout en couleurs du plus bel effet. Certes, tout se paie (25 euros pour les 160 pages) mais ce voyage au bout d’un monde révélant les décombres d’anciennes civilisations, suggérant que le temps passe mais que les mêmes maux demeurent et que si l’herbe est plus verte ailleurs elle peut aussi se révéler extrêmement vénéneuse ne manquera pas de convaincre, que vous connaissiez ou non Hayao Miyazaki. **** On appréciera, pour finir, la postface d’Alex Dudok de Wit qui ne s’éparpille pas en digressions et reste centré sur son objet tout comme le travail d’adaptation/traduction de Léopold Dahan. Plus de 40 ans après sa sortie au Japon, ce livre nous parvient enfin en France ❤️ Ce conte illustré se fait la parfaite synthèse prophétique de l’œuvre de Miyazaki. On y devine facilement les prémisses et esquisses de ses prochains films. Impossible de ne pas reconnaître en Shuna, le droit et valeureux protagoniste, chevauchant un hybride de cerf et de bouquetin, Ashitaka de Princesse Mononoke aux mêmes vertus et à la même monture. La problématique abordée dans ce manga est également chère aux films de ce réalisateur. Originaire d’un village aux confins du monde, si esseulé que même le soleil ne s’y pose pas, Shuna part en quête de graines magiques afin de lutter contre la famine s’étant abattue sur sa région natale. Le rapport entre l’Homme et la nature se trouve au cœur de ce livre qui interroge pour mieux réaffirmer l’existence d’un possible équilibre. Hayao Miyazaki s’inspire directement d’un conte tibétain qu’il réinvestit avec sa propre sensibilité afin de mieux aborder ce sujet. D’autres thèmes parcourent également cette œuvre, notamment la question de la dignité humaine et de la cupidité des Hommes à travers les figures des deux jeunes esclaves. Le propos de ce livre est sublimé par les magnifiques visuels à l’aquarelle. J’ai été émerveillée par la beauté de certaines planches que j’ai tenu à vous partager dans les prochaines slides 😍 Petite anecdote pour les plus observateurs : le design de la jeune esclave dans ce livre a servi d’inspiration à Miyazaki pour le personnage de Nausicaä. Favourite new series from 2023! • Here they all are, with Innocent taking the top spot for new series this year (but Hikaru is definitely a close second)! I finally got into JJK this year which I’m super happy about as it’s quickly become one of my favourite shounen series and, even though I read CSM this year by Fujimoto and didn’t really vibe with it, I loved Goodbye Eri! I never thought we’d see Shuna’s Journey receive an English release but here we are and First Second books produced a really lovely hardback for it. In general, I kinda gave up on hoping for Shinichi Sakamoto series to get a release in English but getting 2 series in the same year is kinda mind blowing. DRCL has been excellent! As for Barbarities, I’m just in love with these two boys and the setting, and really pleased with the release we got, it’s such a nice book! Énorme coup de cœur pour cette œuvre magistrale, ce conte illustré écrit par Hayao Miyazaki en 1983 ! Je l’avais gardé au chaud pour ces derniers jours de l’année, ce volume épique, cette promesse de chef d’œuvre oublié. Traduit en français par les éditions Sarbacane en novembre dernier, ce volume dessiné à l’aquarelle par le jeune Miyazaki en 1983 nous parvient enfin, en sens de lecture japonais, juste magnifique, marquant, sombre, inspirant et intensément poétique. Dans ce volume germent déjà les thèmes chers à Miyazaki: la surexploitation des ressources, l’esclavage (ici dans ses plus sombres aspects), la quête, la Nature personnifiée…. Cette histoire est inspirée d’un conte traditionnel tibétain sur la découverte de l’orge. Miyazaki l’a sublimé avec des héros forts, dont les traits inspireront d’autres de ses personnages par la suite, comme Nausicaa entre autres. J’ai été emportée. Soufflée. Immergée dans ces illustrations sublimes, dans les décors et les ambiances incroyables. J’ai adoré ces deux héros dont les forces et courages se répondent en écho, Shuna, le courageux prince à l’obsédante quête d’une céréale qui sauverait son peuple. Héros qui saura être impitoyable, déterminé et téméraire. Il sera même puni pour son audace, puis devra retrouver l’humilité pour regagner la lumière. Et c’est grâce à Théa, qui va porter la deuxième partie de la quête à elle seule, pendant que Shuna traversera les ténèbres. Théa qui échappe à l’esclavage, qui veille farouchement sur sa petite sœur, qui est aussi intelligente que courageuse, dévouée, libre. Des héros qui se sauvent l’un l’autre, une épopée incroyable dans une contrée hostile pour un rêve de paix dorée, c’est un texte à découvrir absolument ! Interrogato sulle sue simpatie politiche, Pietro Pacciani -detto “Il Vampa”, anche per la sua esperienza da mangiafuoco- rispose che sì, era stato alla festa dell’Unità di Cerbaia. Ma non si scambi questa partecipazione per una partecipazione politica: il Pacciani si recava lì per gli ottimi “polletti fritti”, talmente buoni da commuoverlo durante la deposizione. Dunque, puro e semplice svago. Il divertissement di Hayao Miyazaki è un microcosmo interiore proposto in 142 tavole ad acquerello -esperibile compiutamente in 24 colori scelti dal maestro stesso- che racconta “semplicemente” di un principe che intraprende un viaggio per salvare il proprio popolo dalla fame. I canonici baloon sono ridotti all’osso e il lettore viene edotto sugli eventi e sul viaggio per mezzo di didascalie; pochissimi anche i dialoghi e l’uso del discorso diretto, quasi del tutto assente l’esplorazione psicologica dei personaggi. La sequenza di eventi proposta da Hayao Miyazaki è sostanzialmente lineare e, a livello di consistenza narrativa, non è troppo memorabile (almeno per chi scrive). Emerge però con forza un'impronta autoriale e stilistica -nel tratto personalissimo e nell’impostazione teorica del tema e della narrazione- talmente peculiare da non avere eguali e da non poter esser confusa con quella altrui. L’autore si ispira alla leggenda tibetana Il principe che divenne cane e ne riprende gli snodi principali. Ciò che davvero colpisce di quest’opera è la commistione di elementi saldamente presenti nell’immaginario dell’autore e una sorta di citazionismo ego riferito di grande gusto. L’esperienza premorte di Shuna, che lo trasforma in un vagabondo poco più che muto, è presa dalla leggenda tibetana di cui sopra ma è anche un elemento cardine in Porco rosso; i design dei personaggi ricordano da vicino Nausicaä della valle del vento -serializzato da febbraio 1982 sulla medesima rivista- così come Howl, Kiki, il mondo di Laputa e quello di Conan il ragazzo del futuro. Shuna’s Journey (1983) is a strange short manga from Hayao Miyazaki, the famed animator and filmmaker. Written during his work on Nausicäa of the Valley of Wind, it explores themes and landscapes that echo both that work and later films such as Princess Mononoke. The artwork is odd for manga in that it is full-color watercolors throughout. Plus there is virtually no dialogue; the story is told almost entirely with captions. It’s an intriguing and odd story, but Nausicäa is better manga. *sigh* Me van a querer matar por decir esto, pero Shuna's Journey, no es el mejor trabajo de Hayao Miyazaki. Escrito en 1983 y siendo una adaptación de un cuento tibetano esta historia no termina de definirse. No sabe si quiere ser un manga, una novela o un libro de ilustraciones. Y por todo esto, la historia sufre con un ritmo irregular. Shuna es un joven príncipe que vive en un pequeño reino que el tiempo olvido. La vida es dura y la comida escasea. Un día llega un forastero medio muerto, el cual lleva consigo unas semillas extrañas que Shuna no había visto en su vida. Con la ilusión de ayudar a su reino Shuna parte a buscar el origen de estas semillas. En su viaje se topa con la dura realidad de una persona que ve el mundo por primera vez: El mundo es un lugar enorme y hostil. Shuna ayuda a unas hermanas a escapar de unos esclavistas y después de separarse de ellas, finalmente logra llegar a su destino: la tierra de los dioses de donde provenían las semillas doradas. No voy a hablar del final, porque no quiero arruinarles la historia, por si la quieren leer. Pero me molesto mucho que no tuviera una resolución concreta. Es como que Miyazaki dijo: "bueh, ya fue. Acá termina. Y si algún día se me antoja, lo continúo." Los únicos factores que redimen esta amalgama de manga y novela son: 1- La edición hermosa en tapa dura. 2- El arte maravilloso de Miyazaki.
