These are basically the equivalent of Western indie comics. It's twelve stories, all written and drawn by Umi, examining various facets of motherhood, family, human relations, loss, and other resonant themes. This was a fun book to discuss because it's fiction about things that matter, y'know? It's the kind of work that inadvertently made us examine ourselves and engage in self-reflection... Almost kinda therapeutic. If you ain't read this yet, go out there and buy a copy of this. Glacier Bay Books publishes a ton of cool and intriguing manga that's more on the obscure and artful side. Like other comparable artists such as Steve Epting or Butch Guice, Perkins excels at depicting realistic superhero action through solid figurework, proportional anatomy, grounded gritiness, exciting and dynamic action, and good acting. Two of Howard Chaykin's stories in Solo issue 4 are heist stories. Although one is a western and the other is a modern-day industrial saboteur tale, both are predicated upon similar twists: the two characters that you'd think would be at odds against one another have actually been in cahoots the whole time. There are minor differences, of course, but it's kinda odd when you peel back the layers and look at the machinery of the stories. Even so, these are probably two of the better stories in his issue. The first story in Howard Chaykin's issue of Solo is about a famous jazz musician who almost gets stuck in Paris when the Nazis took over. He frantically tries to escape the city. It's a strong premise, but the twist ending, in which his salvation comes from a Nazi who happens to be his biggest fan, is kind of an odd one when you slow down and really think about it. Is the real twist that not all Nazis are bad? Or is it supposed to be a lighthearted joke that even Nazis can love jazz music? Whatever the reason, it's an ending that strikes a dissonant tone with the serious beginning of the story. Teenage Sidekick is the story that won Paul Pope an Eisner Award. It's a bit surprising because the story itself is simple and doesn't seem to do anything much other than show off Robin and Batman in action. However, the style and execution are incredibly energetic. Amazingly, the legend James Jean colored this, too. We get some nice scenes of Robin in danger, as his overconfidence led him to get captured by the Joker's goons. He manages to do just enough to keep himself alive until Batman gets to the scene, but hanging over Robin's head is the fear of how Batman will reprimand him. At the end of the tale, Batman's rebuke is far less harsh than we'd expect, and it's actually a bit amusing to see. Like a lot of Pope's output, this story has youthful, rebellious energy and conveys how young people view the world of adults. In 2020-2021, around almost eight years after the final issue of Sweet Tooth, Jeff Lemire and José Villarubia returned to the world of Sweet Tooth with this six-issue Black Label miniseries. It's a short sequel to the original work - probably more of a coda, really. Taking place 300 years after the original ending, The Return remixes many of the concepts and themes of the original, in a very condensed amount of space. It's more action-packed and plot-centric than the original, but because it shares a similar heart and soul, it still feels close enough like Sweet Tooth. It's certainly no substitute for the original, and most likely wouldn't be very impactful if you're unfamiliar with the original, but in and of itself, it's a solid post-apocalyptic thriller. Perhaps the biggest problem with the story appears if you read it immediately after reading the original. Experienced in such close proximity to the original, The Return can feel like a hollow approximation of the earlier work, truncated to fit the commercial demands of grabbing the attention of Netflix viewers. However, if you put some distance between both works, then The Return feels more effective as an epilogue. The echoes of the earlier work accentuate the underlying themes of Sweet Tooth as a whole. Yet ost readers coming in to Sweet Tooth now will probably read The Return as soon as possible, which may not do wonders for its reputation. Is it an unnecessary sequel? Perhaps, but it's still a good comic. Both can be true. Sweet Tooth fans will want to track down a copy of Vertigo Quarterly: CMYK: Black, an anthology that contains Sweet Tooth: Black, an eight-page short story by Jeff Lemire and José Villarubia set in the days before Gus ever met Jepperd. It's about Gus being a kid, enjoying nature with his pa, and then meeting another hybrid kid who needs help. The other kid gets caught in a trap on the other side of the fence that Gus' pa told Gus never to cross. After much turmoil, Gus cannot help the other kid and runs away, leaving the other kid to a presumably gruesome and sad fate. It's a short but harrowing tale. Tim Sale was a talent lost too soon. One of his best achievements in comics is his issue of Solo. We take a look at this great issue in our latest episode! Fernando Blanco really does a masterful job using four-tier grid layouts to pace a simple conversation between two friends who haven't seen each other in years (while they do the prep work to set a houseon fire). Here are Pasqual Ferry's character designs for some of the familiar Marvel superheroes that show up in Namor: Conquered Shores. First up, we've got Namor rocking collared shoulder pads so everyone can still see his nips. Next, we've got bearded Captain America with a patriotic varsity jacket. Then, in Ferry's most questionable design choice, we see Luke Cage with his muttonchops, wearing a princess tiara and a yellow grandma shawl, accompanied by a Moses staff. Machine Man looks about the same as usual. Finally, we have Marvel's edition of Frankenstein's Monster. What do you think of Ferry's designs? Namor's dialogue ("Egad! The undead MONSTER of lore!") is such bad writing. Maybe that was how Namor talked back before he fought in World War II, but this story is supposed to take place a hundred years from now. I suppose it's possible that "Egad!" as an expression could make a comeback by then. Maybe we should start using it with more regularity now. This Marvel Series II card was one of both of our first exposures to Namor, the Sub-Mariner. This card always grabbed my imagination when I was a kid. I had no idea Griffin was an actual supervillain, let alone an entity capable of human thought and speech. It was years later when I learned Griffin was a person with his own agency. But when I first laid eyes on this card, I thought he was Namor's pet manticore that he would ride into battle. But, nope. If you dig the collective work of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, make sure you track down Batman issue 603. Not only is this issue one of the most outstanding Batman stories ever, it's also a testbed of sorts for Sleeper. You can see Phillips beginning his experiment with his cascading panel layouts. It's a critical link in the evolution of their collaborations together. Though the story takes place in the midst of the Bruce Wayne: Fugitive event, it's self-contained enough that all you really need to know is that Batman has chosen to ostracize himself from his usual Batfamily. The issue is about the original detective assigned to the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne. The detective is old and has a terminal illness, and this unsolved case has haunted him all these decades. Through a connection with Leslie Thompkins, he manages to get a meeting with Batman, and he asks Batman to take over the biggest unsolved case of that cop's career. It's a great noirish and introspective tale that even has some genuine insights about Batman. Brubaker originally had the idea for this story but was going to use Slam Bradley. Things evolved so he reworked the basic concept, and this is what we got. I recommend tracking this down for sure. The very first page of Sleeper establishes Sean Phillips' distinctive page design. Throughout the majority of the series, he would use these cascading panel layouts. (The exception was for flashback scenes within the story.) Essentially, each page was dominated by one larger image, with a series of inset panels "cascading" around it. These layouts added to the claustrophobic and paranoid tone and atmosphere of the book, as the protagonist, Holden, was fighting for a way out of being embedded as a sleeper agent in a criminal syndicate while being surrounded by people he couldn't trust. It all goes to show how much impact a thoughtful artist can impact the storytelling of a comic. Tao, formerly known as the Tactically Augmented Organism, is the primary antagonist of Sleeper. He was originally created by Alan Moore back when Moore was writing WildC.A.Ts. Tao's a hyperintelligent manipulator who can psychologically break anyone with his words and mind. He worked as a villain in Moore's WildC.A.T.s but he's even more intimidating in Sleeper as one of the grandmasters (along with Lynch) playing the chessboard of life with Holden as their pawn. Point Blank, a five-issue crime mystery drawn by Colin Wilson, was such an intriguing piece of work that even before the story was complete, editor Scott Dunbier and WildStorm head honcho Jim Lee asked writer Ed Brubaker to pitch them an idea for another series. After giving it some thought, Brubaker came up with the idea for Sleeper, and recommended Sean Phillips as the artist. (Phillips actually designed Sleeper's protagonist, Holden Carver, before Wilson properly introduced him in issue 5 of Point Blank.) Ostensibly a solo series featuring the Wildcats' Grifter touring the WildStorm universe while trying to solve the mystery of who shot John Lynch (WildStorm's version Nick Fury, not the former Hall of Fame safety and current general manager of the San Francisco 49ers), Point Blank ended up evolving into a Sleeper prelude. Even without the Sleeper connection, Point Blank is a great moebius strip of noir in and of itself, well worth the time of any discerning reader. That it became a lead-in to Sleeper merely makes it all the more essential reading. Blissful scenes of daily life and domesticity towards the end of Deadly Class volume 11. First off, if you're ever in the San Francisco Bay Area, that first panel is no joke. Drive south down 1 from Pacifica along the coast. On a clear day, it's stunningly beautiful. (But pay attention to the road so you don't drive off a cliff.)
