Two of Howard Chaykin's stories in Solo issue 4 are heist stories. Although one is a western and the other is a modern-day industrial saboteur tale, both are predicated upon similar twists: the two characters that you'd think would be at odds against one another have actually been in cahoots the whole time. There are minor differences, of course, but it's kinda odd when you peel back the layers and look at the machinery of the stories. Even so, these are probably two of the better stories in his issue. The first story in Howard Chaykin's issue of Solo is about a famous jazz musician who almost gets stuck in Paris when the Nazis took over. He frantically tries to escape the city. It's a strong premise, but the twist ending, in which his salvation comes from a Nazi who happens to be his biggest fan, is kind of an odd one when you slow down and really think about it. Is the real twist that not all Nazis are bad? Or is it supposed to be a lighthearted joke that even Nazis can love jazz music? Whatever the reason, it's an ending that strikes a dissonant tone with the serious beginning of the story. Teenage Sidekick is the story that won Paul Pope an Eisner Award. It's a bit surprising because the story itself is simple and doesn't seem to do anything much other than show off Robin and Batman in action. However, the style and execution are incredibly energetic. Amazingly, the legend James Jean colored this, too. We get some nice scenes of Robin in danger, as his overconfidence led him to get captured by the Joker's goons. He manages to do just enough to keep himself alive until Batman gets to the scene, but hanging over Robin's head is the fear of how Batman will reprimand him. At the end of the tale, Batman's rebuke is far less harsh than we'd expect, and it's actually a bit amusing to see. Like a lot of Pope's output, this story has youthful, rebellious energy and conveys how young people view the world of adults. Tim Sale was a talent lost too soon. One of his best achievements in comics is his issue of Solo. We take a look at this great issue in our latest episode! He does six short stories, some with his colleagues, and some completely by himself. It's a comic well worth seeking out. There's a good variety of tones and tenors in the art and stories, but it's all unmistakably Sale. One of the more fascinating elements is how romantic all of the stories are. Solo foi um projeto, como muitos outros, bem feito pela DC, que dá mais espaço a seus escritores. A editora deu um papel em branco pra artistas do calibre de Richard Corben, Tim Sale, Paul Pope, Howard Chaykin, Darwin Cooke e Jordi Bennet. Só poderia sair grandes hqs e é o que ocorre. Eu leria tranquilamente sagas envolvendo as histórias de terror de Corben, assim como me diverti com as histórias curtas de Chaykin. São bons quadrinhos e ponto. Melhor, são excelentes quadrinhos. É uma edição que os leitores de quadrinhos que se prezem tem que ter em sua coleção. Comprei a um preço bom, em uma queima de estoque típico de editoras que faliram e mandam seu estoque pras bancas/distribuidoras. It’s been 24 days. I think that it has taken me this long to post something because it still doesn’t feel real. When people talk about what “the core” of a person should be, the way you lived your life defined just that. You put blood, sweat, and tears into everything positive in your life that you could. Solo 1 (December 2004), features a look at the art of Tim Sale @sale_tim and is one of his favorite books that no one picked up. Being a fan of his, I have a few copies. Solo is a 12 issue series that takes a look at a different artist each issue (Paul Pope, Howard Chaykin, Darwin Cooke, and others).
