The first story in Howard Chaykin's issue of Solo is about a famous jazz musician who almost gets stuck in Paris when the Nazis took over. He frantically tries to escape the city. It's a strong premise, but the twist ending, in which his salvation comes from a Nazi who happens to be his biggest fan, is kind of an odd one when you slow down and really think about it. Is the real twist that not all Nazis are bad? Or is it supposed to be a lighthearted joke that even Nazis can love jazz music? Whatever the reason, it's an ending that strikes a dissonant tone with the serious beginning of the story.
