I've been waiting to post this merch line I did for Tiny Onion @readtinyonion for awhile now, and I'm so glad I get to. For those who've only been with me since my music industry journey, I actually got my start merch-making hovering on the peripherals of the comics industry, selling my own merch at comic conventions all over the country. It's where I cut my teeth, learned a lot, and met some amazing creators in the comics space. One of which is James Tynion IV @jamesthefourth, who, if you read comics needs no introduction– Maybe you've read his Batman run, or you're familiar with any number of his Eisner-award winning comics. His new imprint Tiny Onion is vowing to tell stories, layer by layer, and they needed some merch to kick off their launch. I'm so grateful to Jazzlyn Stone @jazzlynstone, their Director of Communications, for tapping me to do work on these for Tiny Onion. We've worked together in the past, but this was our biggest project yet, and I had a great time bouncing ideas back and forth with her. She provided an excellent moodboard drawing from comics as much as it did horror and queer protest art, and from there the Tiny Onion team gave me their trust to make some cool things. I think we succeeded. There's a little something for everyone here. My favorite pieces are the accessories– the bandana and the water bottle in particular. I also love the knife cutting into an onion shirt, as simple as it is. They all hover a bit outside of my usual merch-making comfort zone but I had a blast working in this style. Something is Killing the Children is probably the series I’ve picked up most often in recent years, leafed through, read some of it, but somehow never really got into, for reasons that get no rational explanation. Something is Killing the Children #36 then was that issue that didn’t get much hype because everyone knew - even those who hadn’t yet devoted themselves to the series in depth - that James Tynion IV’s Slaughterverse was among the best the horror comics market had to offer. It didn’t need this hype, it automatically spread a jubilant rumble in the comic forums and stores. Simply because there was more, new supply, with Tynion and artist Werther Dell’edera carrying on the story of monster hunter Erica Slaughter. But what finally made me give in - apart from a mixture of FOMO, a guilty conscience and an unfilled educational gap - was the unanimous opinion: this new arc is the perfect time for people who want to get started with the SIKTC universe. And yes, what can I say, the people were all right. Tynion is very adept at picking up on old storylines, incorporating insights and creating a clear feel of on-going, but without overburdening the new reader. With a little SIKTC knowledge, I can already figure out what Erica Slaughter is doing there in the barn in Minnesota and why the phone call ends with a cell phone smashing. There is also a real sympathy for Erica after just a few panels. And this pleasant atmosphere, a mixture of horror and drama, with a predominantly emotive part. Plus, and this is no small part, we have Dell’edera’s truly unique, lively style (atmospherically colored by Miquel Muerto) and an artwork that doesn’t need splatter and blood to show splatter and blood. Now Something is Killing the Children will probably, well, certainly also have a permanent place in my pullbox. Which will also lead to the interesting reading experience of continuing to follow the series and shortening the waiting time for the new issues by reading the previous storyline in the form of trades. On-going with flashbacks, what works in TV shows will probably also work with comics. So, anyone who felt the same way as me: dive in now!

A dear friend shared the following message with me this morning: “The American writer Edith Wharton has suggested that longevity and creativity rest on four things: being unafraid of change, having an insatiable intellectual curiosity, being interested in big things, and being happy in small ways.” That quote got me thinking about many things, two of which I’ll share here. One is simply the importance of the written word and how much power is commanded by the pen. The second is how much joy can be found in getting lost in a book, comic, or really any medium. Advance Review: SPECTREGRAPH #1 by James Tynion IV, Christian Ward, & Aditya Bidikar Spectregraph #1, previously teased in DSTLRY's THE DEVIL'S CUT last year, presents an intriguing concept that feels reminiscent of Tynion's past sci-fi horror stories, a mix of Department of Truth, W0RLDTR33, Nice House at the End of the Lake, & SIKTC. While it didn't immediately capture my attention as some of these other works of his, this first issue hints at a rich narrative with much to be uncovered. Part of the reason I couldn't get into this fully is that I wasn't immediately invested in the characters introduced. Janie, the main character, makes some VERY questionable choices that physically made me angry and, while it may be my privilege showing, are choices I don't think anyone would make. Val, the other prominent character, walked a tightrope of being captivating & a caricature. From a visual perspective, Ward's signature art style shines through with vibrant, bold colors that bring the pages to life. The opening sequence is particularly striking, with bright orange flames that seem to leap off the page. However, outside of a few key scenes, Ward's talents aren't fully utilized. It was a far cry from his recent work in Batman: City of Madness where every page felt like it was stretching his skills to the max. Bidikar is one of the industry's best letterers & does a great job here, though one speech bubble in my ARC appeared to be attributed to the wrong character. Hopefully that got fixed in a final edit. Overall, SPECTREGRAPH #1 is a solid, if unspectacular start to what has the making of a thrilling & unsettling ride if we can get a bit more from the creative team. Not because it is bad. It’s a very well executed book. But it traffics in a particular nihilism brought on by the pervasive and ubiquitous nature of the internet in our lives and the zeitgeist as a whole. The book is clearly influenced by cyberpunk staples and, more interestingly, seems to hint at a somewhat lovecraftian horror lurking under the technology we use. In some ways I would compare the themes to Mignola’s Hellboy. Not just the lovecraftian element, but the idea that our world needs to be destroyed to make way for the next. And whether or not that’s a good thing, a bad thing, both, or neither. That’s an uncomfortable thing to comprehend and immerse yourself in. What an intense, what a brilliant read James Tynion IV and Joshua Hixson’s The Deviant is. If this comic series doesn’t win any award at the next Eisner, then I don’t know what will. As I’ve mentioned (at least once) before, I’m really a sensitive, not to say wimpy reader who doesn’t normally get started on realistic, subcutaneous and psychological horror and thrillers. But with The Deviant, I can’t stop. There are many reasons that prevent me from doing so. First and foremost, the irresistible, intangible pull of this story. Tynion IV delivers a story so precisely written that no word is too much, each one carefully chosen and enriched with many words between the lines. His characters are tangible. You can feel what is going on inside Michael - or at least you think you can in parts -, this melancholic, wistful person, when he tries to find meaning. In the events of his life, his loves, his passions and fascinations, and most of all the Deviant Killer. You can feel the deep bond between Michael and his partner just as much as between him and the killer. You can sense this uncanny calm and composure in the conversations between Michael and the Deviant Killer. Yes, this eerie calm is probably the basic characteristic of this comic. You waver between, walk a fine line between cozy, homely relaxation and deep tension and fear of everything that could be lurking behind the next page. And it turns out, there is something lurking, something unexpected… And then there is Joshua Hixson, who realizes all of this visually. The trembling calm, the disturbing images, as well as the empathy-inducing moments, the emotions between the lines that only need a few strokes to show on the faces and the gestures of the protagonists. I’m glad we’re only at issue #4 of this melancholically touching and frighteningly fascinating, or fascinatingly frightening comic book. Because, inexplicably, I want to stay with what Tynion and Hixson are serving us here for an even longer time.
