Octavia Butler is a well-renowned, afrofuturist and sci-fi writer. Her most notable books, such as *Kindred*, are still taught in middle schools and high schools around the country (until recently in some states). My favorite series by Her is *Lilith's Brood* -- where she explores alien invasion, the exploitative nature of nonhuman species, and human survival. I couldn't put the book down. Butler grew up during segregation and used her stories to explore alternative communities, preexisting hierarchies, and trauma survivors as heroes. Her teacher, Harlan Ellison, sci-fi writer, saw her talents early on and encouraged her to join a 6 week writing workshop, which led her to submit short stories and novellettes. Butler received many awards and accolades, including the Nebula Award for Best Novelette and Hugo Award. Other well-known works include *Fledgling* and *Patternmaster*. Kindred went on to be a TV series in 2022, available on Hulu. Meet the surreal and mesmerizing Jocelyn Sanchez, aka Creamy Skeletons! 🦴💜 Born in San Salvador, El Salvador, Jocelyn Sanchez is an interdisciplinary artist and illustrator who creates work under the moniker of “creamy skeletons.” Jocelyn graduated in 2015 with a BFA in Visual Art and has an M.A in Animation from the University of South Wales. In the past three years she has worked with communities in the Metro Vancouver area to create murals and paintings, including working with the Vancouver Mural Festival. She has also worked with the City of Burnaby though the Deer Lake Artist Residency program to create interactive stories through digital games. This is a re-read via Audible, read by Grover Gardner. Miles and his cousin Ivan are sent to Cetaganda to represent Barrayar at the funeral of the haut-Empress, who has died of natural causes. On arrival, Miles and Ivan's shuttle is misdirected to a deserted service bay and a stranger accosts them, leaving behind a strange rod after being driven off. Later when the dead empress' servant, Ba Lura, is found murdered at the foot of the funeral bier, Miles recognises the Ba as their aggressor. Thus begins a complicated plot. Miles meets the neautiful haut Rian Degtiar, one of the haut ladies who control the Cetagandian gene bank. The strange rod, which Miles returns to her, is the key to the bank, but it turns out that it's a fake. This is the long awaited Ivan book with Miles appearing only in a minor capacity and Cordelia and Aral not at all, though they are mentioned. And note it's before the events in Cryoburn. Miles is an Imperial Auditor, Aral and Cordelia are off on Sergeyar being Viceroy and Vicerine which leaves Ivan centre stage ably supported by his mother, the redoubtable Alys Vorpatril, and her (now) partner, Simon Illyin, the retired head of Imp Sec. Playing second fiddle to Ivan in this is Byerly Vorrutyer who starts off the whole story by turning up on Ivan's doorstep and asking for a favour. Byerly is a deep undercover agent for Imp Sec and asks Ivan to pick up and babysit a woman who has been targeted by some of the villains he's shadowing. But Ivan's charm is not enough and hijinks ensue. With the aid of a packet of instant groats Ivan jumps in at the deep end, tying himself not only to Tej, but to her unscrupulous Jacksonian/Cetegandan family out for revenge. It's the marry-a-stranger-fall-in-love-later plot but delightfully accomplished. It's light and frothy but with a solid plot.
