I had the incredible opportunity to attend A Community Conversation with the American Educational Research Association @aera_edresearch at Bethune Elementary School, and it was truly eye-opening. The panelists shared diverse perspectives on the challenges our Philadelphia students face academically and mentally, offering a range of possible solutions to help them succeed. Listening to the panelists discuss their insights and experiences was both enlightening and inspiring. Each speaker brought a unique perspective to the table, shedding light on the complex issues that our students encounter on a daily basis. From addressing disparities in access to resources to promoting mental health and well-being, the discussions were rich with ideas and solutions. It became evident that there is still much work to be done to ensure that all students in Philadelphia have the support they need to thrive academically and emotionally. The commitment and passion of the panelists and attendees alike underscored the importance of coming together as a community to address these challenges head-on. As I reflect on the conversation, I am reminded of the critical role that each of us plays in shaping the future of education in our city. By continuing to engage in these important discussions and taking action to implement positive change, we can create a more equitable and supportive educational environment for all students. Today begins School Library Month! While other districts across the country will be able to highlight the unique value their school libraries bring to their schools & students’ achievement, we will be raising awareness about the NEED for #librarians4phillyschools. . In 1991, @philly_schools had 176 librarians for 259 schools, but in the 1990s the district stopped funding school librarian positions and closed its Office of School Libraries in the mid-2000s. . Now, Philly has the equivalent of only TWO full-time librarians for its 200+ schools. Philly students deserve better. . This month we will be starting a campaign where you can reach out to State Legislatures and City Council Members to increase funding so all K-12 schools in the district can have libraries with school librarians.
