Well hello there. If you got my snail mail* this week you’ll already know that I’m 4 weeks into an illness that has found me mostly in bed. 4 weeks is nothing in the scale of things but I’d planned to spend Jan/Feb writing: spinning out some yarns from the wooly mass that has been living in my head for too long now. But the brain fog has been wild and somehow I just can’t make it happen. But the thoughts keep coming, especially in terms of what it means to practice menstrual cycle awareness in a world that is burning. And so the memes emerge to satisfy the idea-ing, whilst the words won’t come good. I hope you know me well enough to understand that I’m not saying you *must* keep your eyes on P@1est eyen or all the other colonial harms 100% the whole time, but I am inviting you to consider how your practice might support you to engage. One of the big lessons for me about working with my cycle is that I know my capacities better: I know when I’ve got the stamina to maintain my gaze on + work to change systems of harm +when I need to retreat. I also think it’s important to destabilise MCA + ask critical questions of it as a practice; to queer and inquire. Otherwise we risk creating McCycleawareness in a similar way to how Ronald Purser wrote about mindfulness becoming McMindfulness under capitalism. Neoliberal late stage capitalism risks turning MCA into an individualising practice of self obsession, but there is so much more potential if we keep working together to reimagine what cycle awareness is for. (Obviously there’s far more to say on this, this is just the tip of the iceberg, but brain fog and exhaustion etc etc etc) Okay, rant over. Thanks for sticking around here. Golowan - Solstício de Verão Golowan é o termo córnico ( da Cornualha) para Solstício de Verão, é uma época que festejamos o ápice do sol em seu poder máximo e governando a terra e o céu; os rituais realizados na Cornualha gira em torno do fogo, com as pessoas correndo de um lado para o outro, balançando grandes quadrados de lona em chamas, embebidos em alcatrão e presos à ponta de longos postes ou correntes fortes. Antigos costumes sazonais devem voltar para a vida de quem possui a fé antiga; o auge do verão é a potencialidade do fogo serpentino que emerge do céu e da terra realizando essa dança cósmica e enfeitiçante para despertar o êxtase, loucura e o encantamento. As we arrive at day 40 of the conflict in Palestine, how is your heart, your bodymind, your cycle doing? Have you been prickled by extra rage during your pre-menstrual phase? Have you found yourself leaning into the grief; touched the pain + the horror? I have felt some intense feelings arise in me over this past cycle. I still see a lot of rhetoric out there that pathologises rage during the pre-menstrual phase as not ‘normal’. So-called PMS has been used to vilify women for decades by the overculture (capitalist colonial patriarchy I’m looking at you), leading to a narrative where we’re ‘crazy’ for feeling these things. I think we need to be more nuanced about how we approach the rage that comes up for so many of us. Long time activist +author Joanna Macy talks about how us humans are the ‘nerve endings for the world’. We feel the earth’s pains because we are not separate. I feel this sense of the ecological self most acutely in my pre-menstrual phase…and this cycle has been a strong one for feeling this rage oh-so-deeply. Old hands at cycle awareness will know that there is a particular flavour of wisdom that arises here; a rage that is fuelled by discernment, clarity and powerful critique. Wielded carefully, this energy becomes a catalyst for change. It radicalises us. We resist. We speak up. We take action. I can’t help thinking that there has never been a better time to tune in and listen to this. (Equally, this power needs containment+I heartily believe its most effective when we channel these feelings together. Feeling this rage+anger in isolation is a recipe for feeling shit – been there, done that+it was rubbish). I wrote the other week on Substack that we’re navigating a polycrisis right now. There is so much to be enraged by. Can we let ourselves be galavanised by this? Can we use our cycles as lenses to view the world and let their rhythms guide us into (sustainable) action? Oh hi there. 🐌I know it’s been a super long time since I’ve been over here! I’m currently writing this while I sit at the local swimming pool, watching Tavi take her lesson, which has become one of my traditional writing spots over the last few months. I didn’t really ever plan to take such a long break from this app, but here we are 4 months later. I’m not sure where to start… I suppose the main news is that I’m going to move most, if not all, of my writing over to Substack now. It just feels like a better place for my slower pace and potentially a good switch from the challenges of this attention mining device. (I do have my reservations about it - it’s not faultless by far - but it’ll do for now). It’s kinda become a bit of a tradition that every year at Samhain I spend some time tying myself in knots about the role of The Veil. Are *we* the veil? Is the veil just a thing invented by Victorian Spiritualists? Etc etc. I guess this year is no different. Above is just a small snippet of the bigger piece on Substack. It feels late to be sharing my thoughts on Palestine; I’m almost embarrassed it’s taken me this long, but I really hope you’ll head over their to read it. A witch will collect many different bones, each imbued with certain unique meanings or associations. Then, once cast these bones form meaningful relationships with each other and the symbols they land upon, forming sentences, narratives, impressions and stories that relate to the question put to them. Creating a personal set is a sorcerous act in its own right as it will take time and patience (and some skill) to prepare the bones physically and metaphysically for their new purpose, but I can’t think of a better task during the run up to Samhain, can you? New needle lace piece! Portrait of St Ia Undyed, comfrey dyed cotton thread on indigo dyed cotton 10x15cm Saint Ia is the patron saint of St Ives, Cornwall. She was an Irish princess who wanted to join 777 other saints to cross the sea to go to Cornwall. However, when she got to where the boat should be she found that they had left without her, because they decided she was too young to go. In her grief, she noticed a leaf on the water and poked it with her staff to see if it would float. The leaf then grew to the size of a boat and she used it to sail to St Ives, arriving before the other saints. Second slide is an original icon commission of St Ia from Mull Monastery I chose an oak leaf for Ia to sail on because in the Ogham alphabet (a rune alphabet signifying different trees and plants) the Duir or Oak rune represents solidity, steadfastness and protection. I dyed the thread with comfrey from our garden because it represents safety in travel. Well hello there. It's been a little while since I showed my face in this here grid, so I thought I'd make an appearance (+ then sneak in some memes while I'm at it). When I sent out my last newsletter at Midsummer I wrote about how I was going to not be seduced by the fizz of doing All The Things this summer + try to hold back some time just for myself. I can already confirm that I have 100% failed at this. I have done way too much in both the realms of work + play and I have been dealing with the consequences ever since. I've felt so rough for the last few weeks + it's been hard to discern what's just being ill/tired and what's the strange mischief of perimenopause beginning to have its way with me. I've also been reflecting on how I use this space. It's telling how I can sling a few snarky memes on here + garner a load of likes + shares over the course of several days, but write something more reflective (the Menstrunormativity post, for example) and I watch it fade into oblivion after 24 hours with less than half the engagement. Of course, I know that this is just how this space works now. It's this that is making me move over to Substack in the coming months. I'll let you all know when it happens. You'll see that I continue to be pretty disappointed in the ways that menstrual cycle awareness is being totally co-opted by capitalism, healthism and hyper-individualism. To be clear, I'm not talking about 'Cyclical Business' or creativity models that are cropping up, I get that we need to reimagine better ways of doing business under capitalism and these models, when delivered with nuance, definitely act like rogue spanners in the works. But I am absolutely sick of all this reductive 'leverage your cycle for greater productivity' type shit that is out there. And if I see another 'hack your period like a boss' ad I will cry. Durante muito tempo sempre tive uma intenção de ter uma estátua do Diabo das Bruxas em meu pequeno altar, mesmo eu não gostando de altar que explicarei no próximo posto; sempre fiquei fascinado nas imagens dos artesãos sobre o Deus Chifrudo como imagens de Pã popular pra retratar o Diabo que muitas vezes foi sincretizado. Muitas das imagens que hoje temos é de divindades pagãs com chifres ou nem sempre, mas sempre tive uma vontade de ter a minha estátua que simboliza se o Rei das Bruxas de fato que venho até a min. Muita das imagens de santos foram usados pra sincretizar o Diabo, como São Pedro o Senhor das chaves. E decidi criar a minha imagem que segundo os meus encontros com ele mostra como é o Deus da bruxaria. . For a long time I always had an intention of having a statue of the Witches' Devil on my small altar, even though I don't like altar that I will explain in the next post; I have always been fascinated by artisans' images of the Horned God as popular Pan images to portray the Devil that was often syncretized. Many of the images we have today are of pagan deities with horns or not always, but I always had a desire to have my statue that symbolizes if the King of Witches in fact come to me. Many of the images of saints were used to syncretize the Devil, like Saint Peter the Lord of the keys.
