Huge thanks to @nicodelon for his review of my 2023 Oxford University Press book Food, Justice, and Animals: Feeding the World Respectfully, published in the journal Utilitas! 'Milburn brings welcome nuance to the discussion of animals’ political rights and stands out from an overwhelmingly anthropocentric literature on “food justice.” Few books in the field can provoke and engage readers from a wide range of persuasions like this one. Lucidly written, richly informed, impeccably structured, and conscientiously argued, it should be read by anyone interested in animal ethics, animal political theory, and food studies. A short review cannot do justice to the book’s level of detail – Milburn’s evocative descriptions of many cuisines and traditional dishes worldwide – or the crisp and precise yet witty and lively style.' #foodethics #foodstudies #animalethics #animalstudies #moralphilosophy #politicalphilosophy #moraltheory #politicaltheory #oxforduniversitypress #oup #utilitas #animalrights #foodjustice

<225. The Righteous Mind - Jonathan Haidt> This is inline with my journey to understand incomplete human minds. As a strong advocate of behavioral economics, it's an eye-opening experience to understand our conscious/unconsciousness through the lenses of politics and psychology. The book uses ALOT of political theories and researches as reference BUT it's never too tiring or complicated (‼️ which really isn't the case for most of theoretical books ‼️) The three points the author raises are beautifully built like a pyramid and by the time you are done, it (almost) seems like there's a beacon to reconcile liberals & conservatives. 1. Intuitions come first, strategic reasoning second. 2. There's more to morality than harm and fairness. 3. Morality binds and blinds. If you ever wondered why conservatives are so determined 'not to change' and whether diversity is really the only means to 'liberate' us -- TRY THIS!

According to John Stuart Mill, the ideal perfection of utilitarian morality is to treat others the way you would want to be treated and to love your neighbor as yourself. In other words, maximizing happiness for all. How can we apply this principle in our daily lives? Let's take a step towards a happier and more ethical world by applying the principle of utilitarian morality in our interactions with others. Who gave us the ability to understand the difference between good and evil? Who gave us knowledge of good and evil? Who gave us consciousness? Science can’t answer this question, but the Bible tells us that the entity that gave us knowledge of good and evil is a serpent. So if the serpent gave us consciousness, then why is the serpent connected with EVIL in the New Testament? Why is the serpent depicted as a HARMONIOUS serpent in the cultures that left us all the pyramids and temples we still don’t understand? // #divineknowledge #moralrelativism #moralabsolutism #moralvalues #moraltheory #philosophicalthinking #existentialism #theology #metaphysics #karma #conscience #moralresponsibility #spiritualenlightenment #ethicaldilemma #moraldilemma #moralperfection #goodvsevil #soulsearching #moralityplay #ethicalconduct #morallessons #ethicalvalues #moraldevelopment #spiritualjourney #innertransformation #ethicalawareness #moralcompassion #virtuouslife #moralintegrity #ethicalleadership

🚨 A Theory of Justice in 1,200 words 🚨 Here we go. John Rawls’ ‘A Theory of Justice’ - that six hundred page tome which supposedly reinvigorated political theory during the 1970s. I’m not sure what they were drinking back then, but so far this book feels more like a camomile tea than a shot of espresso; it’s nice, but hardly invigorating. Then again, political theorists are not the most excitable people. Ok, so what’s so important about A Theory of Justice and why am I writing about it? In a nutshell, John Rawls demonstrates - successfully or unsuccessfully, depending on your view - that a rights-based social contract approach to political and ethical theory is more rational than utilitarianism or intuitionism. Utilitarianism had hitherto dominated ethical theory, which was politically significant because utilitarians do not recognise human rights. Rights are an illusion at best, a useful fiction that helps society realise its actual goal: the maximisation of utility. Enter John Rawls. By way of his theoretical construct “the original position”, Rawls shows that free and equal persons behind a “veil of ignorance” would rationally assent to his rights-based conception of justice, which he labels “justice as fairness”. For a couple of millennia in the West we have judged people and their actions by the standards of good and evil. But the notion that any individual is simply good is hard to sustain. Almost all claim to be good, but seeing oneself and one’s cause as good often intensifies close-mindedness, dispute and conflict. Should we conclude that dividing the world into good and bad is not just misguided but actually dangerous? Professor Tommy Curry, Massimo Pigliucci, and Joanna Kavenna, explore whether 'good' and 'evil' are just categories used for coercion. Hosted by Myriam Francois. The idea of the natural is far from morally neutral. The natural is identified with the good, while the unnatural is seen as threatening and devilish. Despite the contemporary zeitgeist being wary of these moral distinctions, they remain deep-rooted in language and culture. So how do we make sense of this opposition? In this essay, post-postmodern philosopher Hilary Lawson argues the natural is not how things are, but a proposal of how we should look at the world. “Being on the cusp of the natural and unnatural, we can have safety and potential; we can have understanding and mystery; the world can be known and be unlimited; it can be secure and allow change." Classics of Moral and Political Theory - Michael L. Morgan (1st Edition 1992 by Hackett Publishing Company) 🏷 IDR. 450.000 Kondisi bekas masih sangat baik. . Genre : Political Science . Summary📜 We have called this anthology Classics of Moral and Political Theory in order to suggest by its title some of the volume's important features. First, it contains writings with a certain content. Some of the texts are about moral or ethical theory in the broad sense that includes reflection on the nature of morality and discussion of the content of the moral life, its principles and ideals, its characteristic virtues and vices. Other works deal with political matters, also in a broad way, often treating the relationships among political, legal, religious, philosophical, moral, and psychological issues, discussing the nature of political institutions, political practice, and much else. Some of these works, then, are classic moral texts; some are classic political texts; some are both. All, however, and this is my second point, are classics. What is a classic? Surely there is no short and simple answer to this question. But perhaps this much will do: A classic text is one that reverberates within one or more traditions. It is a text that articulates powerfully influential views, positions, or conceptions; that exhibits in a paradigmatic way models, motifs, or arguments; and that is recalled, cited, and exhibited in subsequent discussion, inquiry, and debate. A classic, in short, is a work that makes an important difference or at least, from a particular vantage point, is thought to have made and to continue to make such a difference. #readythriftboox

£3.95 Free Returns UK Delivery @oxfamonlineshop Russell Hardin presents a new explication of David Hume's moral and political theory. With Hume, he holds that our normative views can be scientifically explained but they cannot be justified as true. Hume argued for the psychological basis of such views. In particular, he argued for sympathy as the mirroring of the psychological sensations and emotions of others. By placing Hume in the developing tradition of social science, as a strong forerunner of his younger friend Adam Smith, Hardin demonstrates Hume's strong strategic sense, his nascent utilitarianism, his powerful theory of convention as a main source of social and political order, and his recognition of moral and political theory as a single enterprise. #davidhume #moraltheory #politicaltheory #politicaltheorynerds #moralandpoliticalphilosophy #politics #secondhandbooks #oxfamonline #oxfambooks #cotswold #chippingnorton #cotswoldshops #cotswoldbookshops

Today’s #VUP80 book spotlight: MAKING MORALITY: PRAGMATIST RECONSTRUCTION IN ETHICAL THEORY by Todd Lekan (2003) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In MAKING MORALITY, Todd Lekan argues for a pragmatist conception of morality as an evolving, educational, and fallible practice of everyday life. Drawing on the work of John Dewey, Lekan asserts that moral norms are neither timeless truths nor subjective whims, but habits transmitted through practices. Like the habits that make up medicine or engineering, moral habits are subject to rational evaluation and change according to new challenges and circumstances. This pragmatic interpretation of morality provides a way out of the conundrum of relativism and absolutism. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Building on classical American philosophy to address current philosophical concerns, Lekan’s theory revises our basic understanding of moral life and the place of theorizing within that life. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #ReadUP #UniversityPress #BookSpotlight #Philosophy #AmericanPhilosophy #EthicalTheory #MoralTheory #MoralPhilosophy #Ethics #Metaethics #Pragmatism #JohnDewey

Today (May 20th), it's John Stuart Mill's birthday! Here's an old picture of him. Among other things, he was a pioneer of utilitarianism. He published a series of articles about this theory in 1961. He won 10,000,000 utilitarian points for that! Kitsch poem, yes. But... if your ethics can’t account for responsibility and dependency upon others, that’s just nihilistic egoism, bruh. This dumb poem is all that is true behind any valid theory of value.

I met Catherine Wilson, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Visiting Presidential Professor at CUNY, at a workshop the other day where she gave a talk about moral progress. I won't share the details of the talk, since it was based on a paper-in-progress (although the talk was public, it doesn't feel right for me to share its contents—we'll have to wait for the paper to come out). The talk was very interesting, and I actually thought that I might apply some of her ideas to my own research. I wrote Catherine an e-mail after her talk, and we ended up corresponding (she's very nice and helped me out by sending me a number of papers). I wasn't familiar with her work, even though I should have been—among other things, she wrote the Very Short Introduction to Epicureanism! Anyway, one of the main ideas that I'm considering taking up can be found in her book Moral Animals: Ideals and Constraints in Moral Theory (2004), so I decided to get a copy. I'm tired and feeling lazy, tbch, and I still have some things to do tonight, so I'll leave you with the blurb: "In Moral Animals, Catherine Wilson develops a theory of morality based on two fundamental premises: first that moral progress implies the evolution of moral ideals involving restraint and sacrifice; second that human beings are outfitted by nature with selfish motivations, intentions, and ambitions that place constraints on what morality can demand of them. Normative claims, she goes on to show, can be understood as projective hypotheses concerning the conduct of realistically-described nonideal agents in preferred fictional worlds. Such claims differ from empirical hypotheses, insofar as they cannot be verified by observation and experiment. Yet many, though not all, moral claims are susceptible of confirmation to the extent that they command the agreement of well-informed inquirers. With this foundation in place, Wilson turns to a defence of egalitarianism intended to address the objection that the importance of our non-moral projects, our natural acquisitiveness and partiality, and our meritocratic commitments render social equality a mere abstract ideal. "𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝘼𝙧𝙚𝙣’𝙩 𝙀𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙨 𝙈𝙤𝙧𝙚 𝙀𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡?" ⠀ ⠀ By Michael J. Sigrist David V. Johnson, Ed. ⠀ ⠀ “Eric Schwitzgebel, a philosopher at University of California, Riverside, and a prolific blogger, has stirred up some controversy by studying whether ethics professors are morally better than others. As you might imagine, this is not a straightforward task. How do you measure how moral someone is? Schwitzgebel looks at indicators that are common and easy to quantify, such as how often someone calls their mother, whether they return library books on time, and so on. So far he has found no evidence that ethics professors—people who study, teach, and write about ethics for a living—are any better than the average person. ⠀ “The results don’t surprise me,” writes Sigrist. “I’ve always sensed that we philosophers, if we differ from others at all, are maybe a little worse than average—more petty, more arrogant, and maybe less forgiving than most. ⠀ “…being right about topics like abortion, prostitution, climate change, and so on, does not make you good even when you have all the right opinions and act on them perfectly. On the face of it that might seem like an odd claim: Surely it is good to be right about abortion, meat consumption, climate change, and procreation! That may be true, but it mostly misses the point…” ⠀ The full article can be accessed here: ⠀ https://blog.apaonline.org/2019/12/10/why-arent-ethicists-more-ethical/ ⠀ ⠀ #apablog  #publicphilosophy  #philosophy #americanphilosophicalassociation #ethcis #moralphilosophy #morality #morals #moraltheory #ethicisits #socialphilosophy #moralbehavior #professors #impersonalethicis #personalethics #forgiveness #compassion #kindness #charity #veganism #abortion #guncontrol #ethicalissues

We’re very excited to host Jill Ross for her talk on Horatian Poetics and Moral Theory in the Middle Ages on September 18th. You can register for this event on our website. — One of the animating doctrines of medieval poetic theory is the avoidance of poetic error. Based on the first 37 lines of Horace’s Art of Poetry where the poet counsels against inept, monstrous composition, medieval commentators created a system of 6 poetic errors that became a canonical element in the teaching of poetic technique in the standard artes poetriae of Geoffrey of Vinsauf and Matthew of Vendôme. The term used to refer to these poetic errors, vitia, carries with it a moral, ethical charge, with poetry placed firmly under the philosophical rubric of ethics. While this prescriptive system of avoiding poetic vice is a theoretical topos, what is less clear is how poets chose to intervene in such a fixed system. • • • #ethics #uoft #horace #middleages #moraltheory

I'm currently working on the second paper for my dissertation. I've already written around 6000 words—I'll have to be careful that it won't become too long, although I could always decide to move some stuff over other papers. I have plenty of ideas; the difficult part is to piece them together into single, coherent papers. If you've followed me for a while, you'll know that I'm interested in the notion of moral reasons—more specifically, in the existence of and relation between agent-neutral and agent-relative reasons. For Thomas Nagel, whose work in this area I've shared before, a reason is an agent-neutral reason if it "can be given a general form which does not include essential reference to the person who has it." Derek Parfit builds on this idea, and slightly adapts it, in Reasons and Persons. For Parfit, agent-neutral versus agent-relative reasons can be understood as follows: "Suppose we claim that there is a reason to relieve some person’s suffering. This reason is objective if it is a reason for everyone—for anyone who could relieve this person's suffering. I call such reasons agent-neutral. … When I call some reason agent-relative, I am not claiming that this reason cannot be a reason for other agents. All that I am claiming is that it may not be." One of the things that is at stake, which is something with which I'm grappling in my paper, is whether we have special obligations—for instance, toward our family, friends, people we've promised things, through our profession, and so on—as opposed to merely the obligations we have to other human beings as such. Common sense morality has it that we owe more to our parents, say, or our spouse, than we do to strangers. The question is why this is—how can we ground such special duties? Certain forms of utilitarianism hold that we do not have special obligations to anyone, given that each person is as capable of happiness (and suffering) as another, and what matters for how we act toward others is [...]

Finished this past summer: Morality Limbs, 2018. @line_dot_square — This piece was created using fabric printing processes. The imagery shows different symbolic gestures associated with blessings and moral good within different religions. Organizing and cataloging them in an abstract manner makes them appear formulaic. Recently, I’ve been exploring different ways to represent ideas on moral theory with visual imagery. — #printmaking #screenprinting #fabricprinting #fiberart #reliefprint #textileart #dianapalermo #gesture #moraltheory

Here's a candid shot of yours truly making a poster for PhD Day the other week. We had to pretend to be interviewed about our research by a magazine 10 years from now. I humbly went with a feature in TIME. I usually groan inwardly whenever anyone proposes that we do something 'creative' like drawing—I left elementary school years ago, thank you very much. But this was actually a lot of fun. Let the record show that I am not opposed to using glitter. 💁🏻‍♂️

Coffee and Joyce. || Imagine this. A politician says or does something, and you feel an instant pang of disgust. A flash of anger. You immediately judge that what they just said or did is morally wrong. You might go so far as to conclude that they are a bad person, based on that intuitive pang or flash that you just felt. But what if that pang or flash—that intuitive feeling of disgust or anger—was shaped by our evolutionary past? What if it is a response that has been shaped and fine-tuned through millions of years of evolution, with us now—with us, perhaps, from birth—because it helped our ancestors survive and reproduce? What does this mean for the conclusions that we can draw from those emotional responses? What does it mean for morality, if morality is innate? Should moral emotions substantially contribute to our moral theories, or should ethics steer clear of the emotions as much as possible? I'm writing a paper for the philosophy of risk course that involves so-called evolutionary debunking arguments; there are a number of important works on the subject, but Joyce's 2007 book is among the classics that really started the debate (and there are big controversies here). Whether morality evolved, what it means if it did, and what it doesn't mean if it did are some of my favorite questions and subject areas. It's the kind of course that I'd love to teach at some point.

Articles aren't glamorous, which is probably why you don't see many of them on IG. They don't have pretty covers. They are also generally more specific/specialized/obscure than books, so that, unless you happen to be working in the same academic field, or unless it's a very well known article, it is unlikely that other people will have read it. And what you want on social media, of course, is to share things that people already know and are familiar with—or at least at one small remove. Chances are much higher that you've seen an unread book before. Journal articles aren't displayed in public; they tend to be hidden in libraries. But this is a shame, because there is no reason why academic journals shouldn't be better represented—play a more significant role—in society, especially for subjects that are of interest to 'the public' at large; like a number of sub-disciplines in philosophy. So this is my little ode to articles, or papers if you want to call them that (I used them interchangeably). Although it may seem like academics mostly read books, the truth is that journal articles are the primary means of communication between us. Articles allow you to focus on a specific question or problem, and to share findings with colleagues much more quickly than through the publication of books (even if it still feels like it takes forever before your paper is finally published). At least, that's the ideal. I won't go into what's wrong with the current system. Anyway, I'm taking a course on the philosophy of risk, for which I have to read these articles—a mix of classic and more recent, more general and more specific/applied work. Translated to book pages, this would probably be around 500 pages—and yet when I've read it all, it's going to feel like much more than any single book could contain. That's part of the power of individual articles. Let it be know. #JournalArticlesofInstagram
