When you eat meat you are actually just eating a fancy form of GMO corn and soybeans. Did you know that the majority of agriculture in the U.S. is now raising #GMO crops? Most of these crops will be fed to animals to make meat. This is the epitome of large scale #monocultures that are damaging for #ecosystems and local communities.
The most comprehensive economic study ever done of our global food system shows a switch to sustainable food systems could bring $5 to $10 trillion in benefits a year (equivalent to 4 to 8% of global GDP in 2020) by improving human health and easing the climate crisis. The Guardian reports existing production destroys “more value than it creates due to hidden medical and environmental costs, in effect, borrowing from the future to take profits today.” These stunning facts validate a core message of the Alliance for Sustainability since its founding 40 years ago. The study shows this transition would reduce food insecurity, so that “undernutrition could be eradicated by 2050, with 174 million fewer premature deaths, and 400 million farm workers able to earn a sufficient income.” It would also help limit global warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels and halve nitrogen run-offs from agriculture. The report was produced by an international team of experts through the Food System Economics Commission, with Oxford and the London School of Economics as academic partners. The most common means of pollen transfer is through animal pollination -typically performed by a wide variety of insects, bats, birds, marsupials and even lizards. Many important crops are pollinated by animals, including cotton, citrus, grapes and coffee. Helping pollinators to thrive means that monocultures are often less ideal for pollinators. A field of flowering canola may look like a honey bee’s paradise but it’s not. Today we visited the village of Nodeirinho in Pedrogão Grande as part of the conference Monocultures: Eco-cultural perspectives organized by @letrasfluc in Coimbra. We were welcomed by Dina from Associação de Vítimas do Incêndio de Pedrógão Grande, Association created to help raise awareness about resilience and protection of villages during fires. Since year 2017 when the fires happened not much has changed. The villages continue being surrounded by monocultures of Eucalyptus. Dina, who lives in the area, says that it has been difficult to persuade the landowners to change the land use from Eucalyptus plantation to biodiverse forest cultures. It is all about the money and of course lack of incentive from the government. The paper industry lobby has their tentacles deep in culture including education, scientific research and public opinion. I have been observing and participating in the grassroots movement of reforestation in Portugal since 2017 and a lot has been done, a lot has shifted including direct reforestation of private land by many projects and NGOs. However contemplating today again the extent of monocultures and lack of radical changes, it is clear that there must be a greater effort from both sides: better self-organization amongst communities and real action from the state. I share here some photos which can seem part of normal life today. But all of this remained totally black during 1 year. The local people when asked after the fire if they need food to be donated, no, they said: bring us flowers, we need colour. The small water tank in the village served place for people to enter the water to save themselves from fire and high temperatures that melted many materials that you see on the photo with deformed glass objects. 🌳🌳🌳

Modern #mushroomcultivation currently relies primarily on one production methodology: the synthetic log production method. This approach remains central whether it's implemented in a #microgravity encapsulated container, a unicorn bag, or in a reusable bottle with an #automated #production line. The goal is to emulate a nutrient-rich synthetic log that may or may not fit into the species niche-breadth. So, why is this significant? #Macrofungi possesses the remarkable ability to grow on almost any substrate. Recently, social media has highlighted toilet paper as a substrate – great option for an apocalyptic scenario, but less practical for modern society. The versatility of macrofungi is such that they can thrive on a wide array of substrates, provided the water content and temperature are in a suitable range. However, for scaling up, relying solely on chance or someone's specific #recipe or method for your synthetic log isn't advisable as you can't quantify loss over time... These considerations amount to two aspects in this context. Firstly, it harnesses a highly adaptable organism, almost agent-like, for cultivation in replicable production lines. Secondly, #macrofungi aren't being utilized for they're potential to degrade industry waste into high value #proteinalternatives with high #dietary #fiber content, and as a natural #functionalfood. Modern #agriculture is evolving to include production lines capable of supporting the full lifecycle of macrofungi. This advancement allows for product development that incorporates biocontrol agents, dyes, compounds, fillers, biomaterials, and composite materials. The cultivated organism dictates the efficiency and #fitness of the #agricultural system. Focusing solely on #monocultures and controlled environments that don't mimic the complete lifecycle might excel in #industrial design. While this is beneficial for producing affordable #food in sufficient quantities for the global population, there's always room for improvement in industrial settings. As automation increases, so does the need for precise control over growth parameters.

This work covers the serious impact and consequences that the intensive #avocado monoculture is having on Chile's #environment and #people. In fact, the production of just one kilo of avocado requires about 2,000 litres of water, a much larger volume than most crops. Local people are forced to buy water from private trucks, many left their native lands. The lack of water favors, the spread of diseases and pathologies, and even #animals, once an integral part of agricultural life, have either become a luxury, or they are poorly hydrated - meaning that they their #production has decreased. Robots on Farms (link below)? If you’re an organic farmer, and don’t want to use toxic herbicides like Glyphosate, how do you deal with weeds in your fields? There are many ways. A major one is maximising biodiversity, growing lots of different plants together; this reduces weeds by simple competition. Weeds become a major problem if you’ve created monocultures, massive fields of just one crop – monocultures very rarely occur in nature, and are an open invitation to weeds and pests. And there is always weeding by hand. And in a healthy, well-nourished soil that hasn’t been over-farmed, the odd weed (‘plant in the wrong place’) doesn’t actually interfere too much 🌾. However, some people are always drawn to high-tech solutions. So here we have some (very expensive) robots attacking weeds with a laser beam. Sounds crazy to me. As crazy as growing ‘meat’ in laboratories; but I’ll discuss that in another post. It is high tech that got us into this mess, and high tech won’t get us out. What will get us out of the mess is looking to the wisdom of our ancestors, who had been farming very nicely thank you for several thousand years until the industrial revolution. During the "By Design or By Disaster" conference in the Venosta Valley, workshop participants collectively imagined socio-ecological metamorphoses and brought them to life through dynamic audio soundscapes. The workshop introduced participants to an audio toolset to establish imaginative worlds by co-creating audible augmented reality experiences. Using situated field recordings and personal stories to animate their ideas about speculative futures, the participants created geo-located audio collages. They were shared with a wider audience in the form of two audio walks, sparking discussions and inspiring collective action. Soy is, among other things, essential for livestock feed and the meat industry. For some time now, soy monocultures have been threatened by the amaranth plant. Such is the hypnotic force that soy has on amaranth that industrialists are devoting a large part of their capital to developing technology to uncouple and neutralize the spell between the two species. "Green gold and dry earth" is the second chapter of "In the name of wellness", reportage by Karl Mancini produced with the support of @pulitzercenter. It covers the serious consequences of avocado monoculture on the environment and people living in Chile. This work documents the water emergency in a country where the water code, approved in 1981 by the military regime of Pinochet, has made water a market subject to private ownership. The exponential increase in avocado exports has supported the spread of monocultures creating a water emergency. Local people are forced to buy water from private trucks, and many left their native lands. In 2019, 80% of the animals of the province died due to lack of water and grass. Look at this lovely plant climbing up a tree! Don’t be fooled this April Fool’s Day! This plant is really a scourge! The pictured photo is English ivy, and it is one of the most destructive invasive species at Redwood National and State Parks. It was brought over from Europe as an ornamental. It looks pretty decorative climbing on walls and fences. As a shade-tolerant species, however, it can grow in the redwood forest's low light; like many trailing plants, it will eventually seek out the sun to flower and fruit. Here at Redwood, that means it is notorious for climbing trees. Many insects enjoy the sweet nectar of its flowers, and some native birds will eat its fruit, and this is where the problem spreads. Not only can the plant smother the entire canopy of a tree and eventually kill it, but the seeds of its fruit can also survive the digestive tract of a bird and be “transplanted” somewhere else. Nationally, after habitat destruction, invasive plants are the second greatest threat to endangered species. Most invasive plants were brought here as ornamentals and to help prevent erosion. Here at RNSP, the efforts made to eradicate this species by hand have been successful over time, but there is more work to be done. What can you do? We can all be a partner in making a difference. While pine crops might earn good carbon income in the short term, they come with massive environmental, economic and social liabilities and costs in the longer term. Native forests are the only sustainable approach to sequestering carbon and can also provide so many other benefits, especially as habitat for native biodiversity and in providing resilience against climate change - pine monocultures can never provide these benefits. This photo is from one of Pāmu Farms northern Southland properties and is in an environment that would grow beech forest really well – there are lots of beech forest remnants in the surrounding area. It is a real shame that Government as the owner is not requiring Pāmu Farms to plant native forests. Globally, growing #food is responsible for a fifth of greenhouse gas emissions, not including #transportation. Furthermore, 70 percent of the world's drinking #water is used for #agriculture, despite a severe global water shortage. One proposed alternative is #aquaponics, a combination of #aquaculture, or #fish #farming, and #hydroponics, which involves growing #plants in water, without soil. Its food production system uses 90 percent less water than conventional agriculture. The company @phoodfarm has pools in which 180 fish swim, whose waste is pumped into a pool where naturally occurring #bacteria in the #air, soil and water convert potentially toxic ammonia in fish manure into nitrate, a substance that plants need for their growth. Si c’est terriblement triste, c’est aussi l’occasion de se demander pourquoi nous avons aussi peu de respect pour les arbres, au point que nous les privons de forêt. C’est elle qui les protège. C’est elle qui leur permet d’être et de braver majestueusement les décennies, et à leur rythme, de réguler leur #environnement. La forêt, c’est la #diversité, la #poésie des #contingences de l’univers, l’intelligence de l’équilibre d’un #écosystème. C’est la vie. L’exploitation des arbres, la multiplication des #monocultures, le nivellement, le nettoyage, la dynamisation, ces pressions de l’homme (l’homme) sur les éléments, c’est l’étouffement du vivant, où chaque élément passe de l’être au produit. On n’enlèvera jamais aux arbres la capacité à diffuser le calme, à chanter le vent et souffler nos pensées noires. On n’éteindra jamais leur force vitale.
