Yesterday's training session was a hard one! Not because I can't lift the weight or because it challenged me But because I haven't prioritised my recovery! While it was still a great training session, and I still moved heavy shit I just wasn't feeling the energy I usually do when training! Things moved weird and my form felt off! So this is my reminder to make sure I'm making recovery a priority so that I can continue doing what I love to do! And maybe this is the reminder someone else might need as well! Has a doctor ever told you to 'just stop if it hurts'? This is an actual conversation I had with a client recently. And guess what? She squatted. She lunged. And her knees did NOT explode.😱 She left with a smile on her face, finally with a glimmer of hope that she’d be able to get back to running and living her life again. Sadly, medical professionals love to tell people to just "stop if it hurts." Stop squatting. Stop lunging. Stop running. Stop living. The problem often isn't squatting or lunging or running–it's more about volume. And most problems come from doing too much too soon after too little for too long. The solution? Find a tolerable volume of running (or lifting) that you can comfortably complete without flare-ups, then dial that amount back by ~20% or so and spend a few weeks there building the base. From there, you can start to build up your weekly volume by 10-20%. Easy peasy. If a doc has told you to just stop–find yourself a new doc. BUILT. 🍑💪🏽 After dropping 20kgs I was tinyyy 😬 that’s what my entire focus was for years.. “being small”. Once I got there I was SO proud.. I was 57kgs in the second photo (for reference the first photo, taken last week, I’m 60kgs). I LOVED my body back then, and I’m not shaming myself today saying the things I’m saying. It’s just knowing what I know now - I’ve evolved! 🔐 When I was “tiny” and focused on the scales, and my weight, my health was secondary. I was scared to eat more, I was hungry, still binge eating at times, and I really didn’t have a great relationship with myself, with food or with training. It was very “all or nothing”. I was self sabotaging a lot, which made everything feel so much worse. I could barely celebrate the fact I’d lost so much weight because I was living in this fear of how the f*** am I going to keep this off. Constantly worrying about re gaining the weight, and at times I did! Fast forward to now, where LOVE my body more than ever, I have a very healthy relationship with myself, mentally and physically. Food and training no longer rule my life. I have a very flexible eating style (which I NEVER imagined was ever possible for me). I found a way out of the head f*** cycle of dieting.. and now I teach this exact strategy to all of my clients! Let me make ONE thing clear. STOP LOOKING FOR THE NEW FANCY HACK. Ice baths, red light therapy, sauna, sunning your butthole. They all have benefits (okay, maybe not sunning your butthole ☀️). BUT, they all fall WAY, WAY short of just mastering the basics. There’s not enough time in the day to do everything at once. Focus on getting the biggest bang for your buck. 1️⃣ Lift weights 2-4 times per week for 20-60 minutes. 2️⃣ Get 150 minutes of moderate cardio per week (vigorous walk for most). 3️⃣ Eat 1-2 palms of protein and fists of veggies at each meal. 4️⃣ Turn your brain off and get 7+ hours of sleep per night. AND LIVE YOUR DAMN LIFE THE REST OF THE TIME. At the end of the day, you can do EVERYTHING right, and you’re still going to die. So, you better make sure you can enjoy your life NOW. . . I never thought that I would wear a dress w/cute high heels again after my knee injury. I was on knee braces for 3 yrs straight, I spent endless nights & days in pain until one day I woke up and made the final decision to work really hard to recover everything I had lost, my inner peace, my body strength, my sleep, myself & my hope. It took me year & a half of really hard & intense daily strength workouts with weights, a whole year of Accupuncture, physical therapy, all kinds of healing massages, and a very strong mind set to keep on going with my mental & physical goal. I am still in pain from time to time but nothing can stop me now. So if you feel like you are stuck in your life w/a physical or mental limitation take your time to make the best decision, that’s to take care of the most important person in your life, YOU 💗 Once you make that important decision and you start to feel so good, everything else just starts to fall in place. I just set my goal time for the Marathon. I started running just 4 months ago, with an at that time, ambitious goal to finish in 3:59 for the upcoming Marathon. It’s the first milestone of a long series of different types of challenges i’ve set for myself. As I obsessively overcommitted in this training prep, it feels like I can push my previous goal time even further now. But at the same time, it feels scary to visualize a new goal and having to face reality of potentially not reaching it. As the marathon is this week, minor injuries start to creep up and my insecurity start to rise as well. The past time hasn’t done me well in that regard either. Wat eet je dan wel? Is de vraag die ik vaker krijg. Mijn ontbijt bestaat uit smoothie(bowl), chiazaad pudding, havermout of teffontijt. Middageten of wat over is de avond van te voren of nu het wat warmer is een salade 🥗 met fruit, noten, falafel/tofu. Savonds een soep, curry, lasagne (sinds kort), wok met groenten, groenten uit de oven of pannenkoeken. Meestal een combinatie van groenten en (pseudo) granen. Voor de eiwitten kies ik vaker bonen, linzen, tofu, tempeh en soms een vleesvervanger. Ik heb voor mezelf een aantal spelregels om het voor mezelf makkelijk te maken om keuzes te maken en probeer per dag een aantal voedingsmiddelen binnen te krijgen.
