Conscience

What is that little voice saying? The one in your head that never shuts up? Maybe it’s not so little. Maybe it’s the main chatterbox in your head that you’re mistaking for “you.” It can be hard to sort at first. Your true self, and your ego. This idea was first introduced to me in high school where we learned about the Id and the Ego, and then again in my early 30s when I dove deep into self help books, The law of attraction, the Secret, energetic vibrations, manifestation, etc. It was always so conceptual to me, and hard to apply. My library of books on the subject is.... let’s say... vast. So why was it working for so many people, but I couldn’t quite get it to work for me? I couldn’t remember to just “think positively“ all the time. And i couldn’t connect the dots. Cut to... years later .... I started meditating regularly almost a year ago (eh hem Pandemic) It was a 30 day meditation challenge, and being the rule follower that I am, (hello, A student) I never stopped. (what up Extra credit!) It helps to quiet that damn pesky constant chatter. It doesn’t go away. I don’t think it ever does. But as you meditate, and continually check yourself, notice “yourself” thinking, THAT moment is YOU. The noticing moment. The moment of presence. What made sense to me was, You can’t be observing and doing the thinking at the same time... so if you’re observing, then that little voice CANT also be you. but it IS a part of you. Good news: You can actually, with practice, take control and decide what to listen to. And ultimately, CHOOSE your thoughts. And when you choose your thoughts (as long as you believe them), you get to essentially choose your life experience. What are your thoughts, successes, struggles, with thought work and meditation? Inner Demons #11 The ego is another part of Freudian psychology, along with the id and superego, the latter of which I will draw next time. The ego mediates between the id and superego and makes decisions, so I tried to make him look kinda smart and charismatic, as well as showing his logical aspect by making him robotic. Also, since the ego is the only conscious part of the trio, he's the only one who gets working eyes. This burin engraving is composed of linear calligraphic rhythms that describe strings as energy forces within left and right hemispheres of the brain. The original print also included two woodcut blocks that were used to print color shapes within the large open area of the spherical “brain” region. The central rectangle (composed of interconnected “strings”) represents a microscopic graphic of long-term memory within a hippocampus, a mechanism needed for hanging onto large files of memories. Individuals suffering from amnesia, dementia, or Alzheimers may show damage or extreme loss of synapses (which I have shown as wound-up “gravitational strings” in the hippocampus).
